From an anonymous source - hmmm? I guess you could choose to dismiss some of the citations in The Athletic if they are not attributed to the actual player by name (although you can understand why they would choose to remain anonymous). But there were a couple of quotes where the players did allow their names to be mentioned. eg. Ryan Taylor, formerly a team-mate of Barton’s at Newcastle, was another one. “I walked out of Fleetwood, which was all to do with what Joey said to me,” says Taylor. “I broke my nose in a game. It needed fixing but he didn’t want me to get it fixed. I got it fixed anyway and then he told me I wouldn’t play because I had to wear a mask. If I wore a mask, he wouldn’t be playing me. I walked to the boot room, got my stuff and left.”Another player says he felt “intimidated” by Barton’s presence and, specifically, some of the manager’s outbursts at his players. Michael Fowler, now playing for Coastal Carolina University in the USA, moved from Burnley to Fleetwood in 2019, aged 17. “I hated it,” he says. “In the space of a few weeks, I lost complete confidence; and that went on for two years. I haven’t got a clue why he would do or say the things he does. I respected him and he was the reason I went to that club. I was just intimidated by who he was and that, I feel, prevented me from being the player I was even two weeks before.”Yet there are quite a few Rovers players who say very positive things about him - and not just the ones he has signed.

I know footballers aren't renowned for their intelligence but even the not so bright ones realise that if they say positive things about the manager they are more likely to get a game compared to those who criticise him! It's human nature!

Sadly, you can’t change peoples perception of others Tilly. Most people think they are judging a person, but really they are judging an image in their own mind.

Maybe because they are still employed by him? You could say Barton tried the same tactic on Max Ehmer as he did with Luke Thomas and you have to say it didn't work on that occasion! Remember this quote? (amongst others): The Rovers boss has crossed paths with Ehmer before. The Germany-born defender came through the ranks at Queens Park Rangers, where Barton was captain. "For me, it’s a common theme," the manager said. "Don’t forget I’ve known Max from when I was at QPR. He was training with us when he was 20 and the observations of him then haven’t changed much to the observations of the player I’ve found now. "That is worrying in that period of time, seven, eight or nine years, if you’re still making the same mistakes."
Ehmer was certainly bitter about it: www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/ehmer-bristol-rovers-joey-barton-5554206

Some players might like same as any other boss in any other profession I think the point is, how he handles players that don't respond to him. Plenty of evidence at BRFC, let alone anywhere else that if you fall foul of him/his standards he will chew you out publicly (and that goes for other people than just players) or perhaps react in other ways

In other news - Luke Thomas certainly looked a different player on Saturday, so maybe, just maybe, the harsh words were just what he needed! I prefer blunt talking to pussyfooting around issues - the "nice" approach certainly didn't work with Ben Garner at Rovers did it.

Finley evans Taylor Thomas whelan Anderson Collins Saunders are all very good footballers. So he must be doing something right if these boys , some of whom have played for him before wanted to join us.

Man management is a skill and one which some folk find very difficult, especially ex players. It's not a case of one size fits all and although every member of a team must follow the same rules how you get those rules across can vary individually, some respond to a kick up the bum others need an arm around the shoulder and there will always be players who respond to certain managers in a positive way and others for whom a particular manager can do nothing right.

Totally agree, Joey has put together a really good set of players; imo the team is just lacking in a couple of positions, which I am sure will be addressed during January. Utg

I’m glad Barton called him out. To think he was our club captain and put in pathetic performance after pathetic performance and was about as inspiring as mark McGhee. Barton didn’t slate him enough. Footballs full of politically correct boring interviews. Nothing wrong with calling a turd of a player a turd and ehmer was exactly that.

He was certainly polite with the media but how do you know what happened behind closed doors? Are you a player in disguise? In any case, whatever 'his approach' was, he did a lot better last season that JB who showed a complete inability to manage the players he inherited after informing us all that we would not be relegated.

So I wouldn’t really class any of the article, as evidence. If it’s true, did they take photos or anything to prove it?? Or do we just take there word for it?? If he did do it, it’s totally wrong and shows that he’s so out of touch. If he’s so hated and bad, why did a few player’s move across the country, to play for him again??

Perhaps he treated them somewhat better? Perhaps they wanted to play for the mighty Bristol Rovers? Perhaps they just had no better offers? Just because some players like him or can put up with him, doesn't really excuse his behavior to the others or make them liars. One thing is for sure anyway; he might think himself a great motivator, but he came in when we were outside the relegation zone and motivated our players to rock bottom in the league. Slagging them all off in the media didn't seem to work with that crop, eh? Maybe it will work with this bunch. He recruited them so you would hope he would know. Sitting 15th in the league is obviously way off where we would hope to be - but Barton has repeatedly said we are going up this season and he is not a liar.... is he? Let's hope not!
