Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me with something. I've been tasked with selecting the 5 biggest, most important or most memorable matches in Rovers' history.
Off the top of my head I've gone for: Rovers 3 City 0 (1990) Brighton 2 Rovers 8 (1973) Rovers v Grimsby (2015 play-off final) Rovers v Sheff Utd (1972 Watney Cup final) Rovers 4 City 0 (1992)
Other possibilities could be 4-0 v Man U (1956), Huddersfield (1995) 6-0 at Reading, and Shrewsbury and Daggers promotion wins...
I'm sure I've probably missed a few (I started supporting Rovers in the 80s) so if anybody has any suggestions, or agree/disagree with my top 5 then please feel free to suggest alternatives. Cheers!
UTG

Significant games, I wouldn't rule out the 4-0 win over Sunderland at Twerton, started the Gerry Francis era.

Love nostalgic threads like these. I’d say you’ve named a lot of the ones that spring to mind. In terms of rankings for me:
5 most important for me would be:
Rovers 4-1 Manchester United 1956 Rovers 0-0 Sheffield United 1972 Rovers 3-0 City 1990 Rovers 1-2 Huddlesfield 1995 Rovers 1-1 Grimsby 2015
5 most memorable - (Some I wasn’t alive for)
Brighton 2-8 Rovers 1973 Spurs 9-0 Rovers 1977 Reading 0-6 Rovers 1999 Rovers 3-1 Shrewsbury 2007 Rovers 2-1 Dagenham and Redbridge 2015
Honourable mentions to Rovers 4-0 City 1992, Rovers 1-1 Liverpool 1992, Rovers 1-2 Tranmere 1994, Derby 1-3 Rovers 2003, Rovers 1-0 City 2007, Rovers 1-0 Southampton 2008, Rovers 0-1 Mansfield 2014, Northampton 0-6 Rovers 2017.

We like to moan as Gasheads and yes, success is few and far between. However we’ve had a rich and varied history all things considered. Wouldn’t want to support any other club.

Rovers v Grimsby (2015 play-off final). Absolutely crucial for our immeadiate future that one. Rovers 3 City 0 (1990) Stuff of dreams Rovers 2-1 Daggers Typifies Rovers spirit Rovers 3-1 Shrewsbury 2007 PO Final Should have been where we built upon and never gotten relegated from Rovers 4-0 Man U Everyone loves a cup upset and the Busby babes were the footballing powerhouse at the time.

This is spot on for me - although may have sneaked the 8-2 v Brighton in there, as (a) it was against Cloughie and (b) it was on The Big Match.

Thanks all, much appreciated.
Some great memories from a number of these matches, even if the good times are a bit few and far between!

We beat the other Bristol team 4-3 away in the FA Cup. 15 th Feb 1958.We paraded a banner around the pitch before the game-allowed then- saying 'FOUR MORE GEOFF', a reference to Geoff Bradford scoring four the previous week. The banner made the 'pink-un' which was the Evening World's sat evening footy paper .We also had the Green -Un of course and the match reports were always on sale by 6 pm!!!!

The League Cup(?) game at Ashton Gate under Dennis Rolf where we came from 2-0 down in the first leg to win 4-2(?) over both legs.
That tie seems a life time away now.

Grimsby.
Another year in the conference with the salaries we had could’ve crippled us / left us in non league obscurity. With respect to the glamorous cup wins they aren’t win or bust like Grimsby felt.

Rumbelows cup. 1-3 at twerton 4-2 at Ashton (we were 4-1 up and city needed 2 due to the away goals rule at the time) This is how I remember it if that’s the one you mean 👍👍

Think we were 3-1 down at Twerton and the came back to win 4-2 at AG. Rained on us all night in the open end (before they switched the away end to the old east end). Great comeback and went through on away goals I think.
