The signing of Tubbs was always a bit of a pipe dream, even more so after spending money on Blissett. John Akinde, was shall we say less than impressive at Rovers, as was Scott Rendell, which does seem to suggest that it's the rest of team that makes the difference between a crap striker and a good one in this league.
I look forward to the return of LDV, or alternative, as well as seeing Goldberg being given a good run out at the Mem!

Some strikers score goals at one club but are poor at others. Akinde was crap for us plenty have been and gone on to do well. When we mix it up we score plenty, our 0-0's and 1-1's have generally been when we've played hoof ball and not got players around the target man to support him. We've scored 2 against working and Barnet and 3 against Gateshead, three of the best sides and we've done it by mixing it up. Going out and getting another striker would be like going out and getting another manager we've been doing both for years and it hasn't generally worked. Stick with the strikers we've got and play a combination of short passing, long ball, and wing play and we'll be ok.

Akinde - 18 Taylor - 6 (all competitions) What are you on about? sometimes players do well in a given situation at a club. allen is gettin the best out of him, jus like the odd manager would with someone like heskey, but he isnt that good. he was awful for us, awful for city and was anonymous against us at the mem, so thats what im on about. blisset and taylor will come good!! Akinde has been dogmeat for tons of teams, in the past. That doesn't change the fact that in this season, in this league he has been a better striker than Taylor or anyone else. You can make the argument that Taylor is a good all-around player and I tend to agree but he's got a lot to make up for if he's going to be considered the best striker we could hope for in this division.

Hang on, what? I've just re-read this, how is hitting 18 in half a season not that good? Maybe league one was too high for him but he is clearly a good striker for this division. I see Heskey's looking for an English club though... I'd have him.

Scored 19 last year for Alfreton. I'm not saying we shouldn't give him the chance, he's earned that through his top-notch all around play but you can't write off Akinde's great statistics for the last two seasons and claim he's no good while simultaneously claiming Taylor is already a good striker based on... what? A desire to see him click? His effort levels?. I can't see a season where he's ever scored a decent amount, 22 in 77 in his time at Forest Green. He did go on a decent run at Chester (6 in 7), maybe he does need the service.

The last bit about the service is true in a way but he needs to get closer to the target man he's playing with for a start. When jock and Joner played those lovely long balls into Bruno you didn't see Penrice or Saunders and Mehew running away over to the other side of the pitch, they were within a few yards ready for the second ball. On Friday Wall did his best to hold it up or nod it on but so many times we had nobody there next to him and Gateshead basically surrounded him.

love him or hate him taylor is DC's man. we are 2nd in the league with him as are main striker and he can only get better. yes his goal ratio needs to improve but ther arent many strikers around whos doesnt!
i cant see the board paying for a markee striker, why would they when we buy blisset in jan and lets face it if we signed aguero that prob wouldnt be enough to chase down barnet. from a business pov the risk outweighs the reward when we should make playoffs with or without spending.
i would love to see atleast one young, unscared to run at people winger like ldv when martin goes bk. i think we sumtimes let ourselfs dwn against the smaller teams when we dnt hav the natural wingers to run at part time full backs.

I don't know where people get this idea that he's suddenly going to spring another 10 on top of that.

The difference being Clarkson is playing up front this season and he wasn't at Rovers. Now people will say "He had his chances up front" Yeah probably for a total of about 80 minutes all season.

It's weird; have we all suddenly become innumerate now we're in the Conference? Since people keep repeating "We're 2nd in the league" week after week regardless of our actual position ... which is currently third.
