On that fantatic saturday a few weeks ago i was sitting near his family (20 of them) and indeed i chatted with his grandad at some length. It is a very close knit group and and his grandad in particular is important to him. The 2 embraced for ages at the final whistle. The grandad has travelled to virtually all of his games - no mean feat as he lives in Merseyside. I asked them whether he would sign a new contract and they were non comittal until after the final whistle when they said - " more chance now". I think locality is probably more of a factor for him that most players seem to. They did say that he loves playing for Rovers all players that leave us say the same they love playing for rovers

I’ll be abit annoyed if he leaves to join a club at the same level/league 2. When we brought him in he was the unwanted man who was hardly highly rated elsewhere.
I still think he’ll stay with us.

I think it's a matter of Que sera sera. If we had signed him on a 3 year deal and he turned out to be terrible then we would be complaining. Downside of a 'prove yourself' contract is that if the player does, they will have options. If he goes, he goes with my blessing. Those freekicks have been way beyond league 2 quality. We did the right thing with his contract, we will just need to find the next player looking to prove themselves.

There's more chance of City trying to get Elliot Anderson on loan I already had that nightmare😂. Forest water linked with him on loan. If Newcastle splash the cash and don't want to play him next season, I think he could do a job in the Prem for a club like that.

They did say that he loves playing for Rovers It didnt seem to bother him too much when he went 670 miles away to play for Paderborn I thought I've read that he wasn't there long, which suggests that he doesn't travel well. But as I've already said he'd be surrounded by Scousers at Rovers. Surely he'd feel at home?

I’m kind of surprised that we didn’t throw in an optional 1 year clause into his contract, considering we were signing a 24 year old who’d played in the Bundesliga and League One. Perhaps he didn’t want that in there and we were desperate to get the deal over the line before the window closed. Guess we’ll never know.

Everyone referring to Evans as a free agent, I’m sure someone will correct me but aren’t we entitled to a compensation fee as he’s under 24? Although I know it will be nothing compared to his actual value.

As long as they are offered a new deal on equal or better terms is the requirement I think. It stops young players running down their contracts and leaving on a free.

Appears that we may have a clear advantage over any other club that may be interested in signing him as they will have to pay us compensation, he is probably holding out for more money, but I know Rovers were interested in Callum Camps who has more experience than Evans and is proven in league one, so if Evans doesn't sign for us soon and Camps agrees a deal with us, Evans might have to look for another club anyway so it maybe in his interest to sign sooner than later.

In any case, if Joey Barton can attract the likes of Taylor, Connoly, Whelan, Evans and the Geordie Maradona when we're in League 2, then it bodes well for who he can bring in a level above.
His recruitment has been superb.

His recruitment has been superb. I agree. I think we can all forgive him for Hughes and Pitman now. A couple of disinterested veterans who had their eyes on other avenues of the game. Shame really because Hughes should have been an astute experienced signing given his record. Anyway, Barton abs Jennings seem to have a good formula for attracting talent.

The key to our recent success is totally down to Joey; what a fantastic job he has done, and while it is a great shame a number of last years squad will be either going back to their parent clubs, or simply moving on to pastures new; I am sure, if Joey is still at BRFC at the beginning of next season, the club imo will be in good hands, and the team will be rebuilt, with equally capable players of pushing up division 1.

For me, hughes was the one real disappointment. Had all the credentials, made a poor start, got injured then buggered off at the first opportunity

Given that Evans was only with us for one season then any compensation we received would be minimal, Gillingham only received £150K for Hanlan and I assume he was with them from being a youngster. Regardless any compensation we receive will probably just be deducted from his signing on fee anyway.
