There is a lot of talk concerning this 'clear cut penalty' which would suggest it wasn't quite so clear cut. At the game I thought it was a penalty in real time but after seeing the incident replayed on the EFL show where they decided it wasn't a penalty I am not so sure. I agree with the poster who pointed out that how could the ref have made the decision without the benefit of a replay in a split second. If it had of been given I don't think too many of us would have complained about it. That's other than throwing away 2 points in a game Pompey should have had wrapped up much earlier. For the record Danny Cowley thought it was a penalty.

For those that are interested Thompson's injury is confirmed as a double leg break. The good news is that the breaks are "non weight bearing", whatever that means, and should be back before Christmas and not as bad as first thought. The tibia is the main load bearing bone in the lower leg, the fibula helps stabilise the muscles and ankle. Thompson has broken his fibula in two places.

No one likes to see these things happen on a football pitch. Football is an emotional game and those around me in the home stand were certainly very anti-us after that. Which was no surprise. Hope he plays as soon as he can. But it does show that most of the anti-us stuff posted and nonsense spouted about JB is just pure BS. And changes nothing about it being the most nailed on pen you’re likely to see and how crap the ref was. UTG!

If ours was soft yours certainly was and the EFL boys didn't have the best angle and certainly dosent show the push as well as the contact. I'm sorry but if that's not a blatant penalty I don't know what is anymore.

It was a freak injury and for me no blame on anyone.

For the record - a lot of the anti-us feelings have been stoked by the local Portsmouth media, The News in particular. They ought to know better.

For the record - a lot of the anti-us feelings have been stoked by the local Portsmouth media, The News in particular. They ought to know better. Very true bluegas. But it’s something we all know about with JB as manager. The story is already set by any local media, they have their views and they will write the narrative of any match that if we are competitive and if we really play with a determination all it needs is a free kick to turn us into a “bunch of thugs” and a “violent” team. It’s happened and will continue to happen. Not sure anything we or JB do or say will change that. Not sure that I care about what others think now. Ive watched us enough now to know that we compete, we can be combative but no team is going to bully us as has happened. But we do not go out to foul or hurt other teams but we do match fire with fire. And I can’t be bothered to go back and check but pretty sure that most teams out-foul us. They certainly did last season. UTG!

If the Collins incident was on VAR would it have been given? Not doing anything that Vardy wouldn't do. I have lost count of the number of times I've thought 'stay on your feet' especially when he's through on goal People suggest decisions may go against us due to Barton - consciously or subconsciously - I wonder if the refs have a list of certain players to keep an eye on Pretty sure VAR wouldn’t have given it, especially not this season. I really hope not anyway. If they are given players would be doing the same thing non stop. We know he goes down easy, so like you say I’m guessing the refs would too. They probably have a forum just like us The thing with foul play is its not judged on how hard a player is kicked . If a player makes contact...from behind ...he is skating on thin ice. If a player grabs a shirt and pulls a player ...again he is taking a big risk. Its about whether a player does something contrary to the rules. Then whether the ref spots it. Its the refs duty to ensure the game is played by the rules.

Serious question. How did you lot veiw Barton when he was manager of Fleetwood? How did you veiw his initial engagement, were you pleased or concerned? Have you noticed any change in your playing style? On Saturdays game I wouldn't have said Rovers were any more physical than any other side. In fact I thought Portsmouth were more physical if anything with their pressing game and we were pleased to see our players winning the ball so often. Also I don't think we were bullied at any time which is a change from over the last few seasons. I don't have any preconceived intentions in my questions, just interested in your veiws.

Exactly the point. And if the homer ref did give us a penalty he would have to have sent their man iof because Collins was beyond the last man. I think it's clear Mr Ward was never going to do that. I thought they changed the rules on that, if you bring someone down outside the box and your the last man you get a red. However if the foul is a penalty they just get a yellow even if the last man. Probably me getting confused though HaHa. I thought the rule was that if you made a genuine attempt to play the ball you would avoid a red card if a penalty was given. Collins was brought down but it wasn’t an attempt to win the ball, the ref knew that and bottled it knowing he’d have to send the player off.

The Bolton goalie has just committed a more blatant professional foul in the penalty area and only got a yellow! One of two things saved the Bolton keeper from getting a red card. The referee has either given him the benefit of the doubt and judged that him sticking his leg out was a genuine attempt to win the ball or probably more likely (having just watched it a few times) that Ings had over run the ball and it was likely to go out of play before he could reach it, therefore the foul was not denying a clear and and obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Exactly this Bideford. He was in front of their defence and pulling his left leg back to shoot. Don’t get this notion that he was pulling his leg back deliberately for the defender to trip him - sounds bizarre. Totally bizarre that in a fraction of a second a player can initiate the contact by a slight movement of his leg when he can't even see the oppositions player because he is right in front of him. There was clear contact on him and that alone warranted a penalty. I watched the footage a fair few times but admittedly haven’t rewatched it since it was first posted so may well be wrong, I thought Collins was side by side with the defender to his left not in front of him?

I still can't see what benefit Collins would personally get from winning a penalty rather than having a shot on goal himself, as if he'd won the penalty I assume Marquis would have taken it. Saying it's like Piers "dive" is missing the point he was a world class player not a player who was playing in L2 last season. I think he chose to take a fall because he judged the position he was in was much less likely to result in a goal than a penalty would. I've looked at the replays several times and cannot believe anyone thinks it looked like he was pulling his leg back for a shot at goal. It was trailing behind him, in order to be caught by the defender and hence get the pen. It was a passive trick, not a deliberate cheat, but it was designed to penalise the defender.

As I’ve said previously, the ref wouldn’t have thought twice about giving it up the other end. But it’s now time to move on and cheer the lads onto another 3pts on Saturday.
