Barton was talking quite calmly to the ref and obviously pointing something out and did look to gesture in the direction of the palace player as if to say he was in the wrong for something …. The palace player started mouthing off and shouting at Barton and Barton looked to say something back… the palace player then had to be held back as he was trying to ‘get to’ Barton and Barton looked to wave him away and say go away little boy at which point the stewards and physio got in and started to usher him away… Paddy McCarthy then came over and started to argue with Barton and they all got ushered away….. minor handbags and not nearly as bad as it seems from what a few have written…. A real nothing handbags moment….
Good comfortable win and for me Clarke was MoM…. Looked really sharp. Jasper excellent 1st half but fairly anonymous 2nd - still think impact sub is his best role at the moment…. Agree with others that Westbrooke seemed pretty non existent… he wasn’t atrocious but wasn’t really involved and didn’t really seem to want to be….
Though Palace lost their heads in the last 5-10mins and how Balmer wasn’t sent off for the foul on Clarke, I don’t know…. Blatant 2 hand pulling and aggressive and when they went down he dragged Clarke to him and seemed to put him in a lose headlock on the ground to stop him getting up….borderline violent conduct and or borderline professional foul as Clarke would have been completely clean through albeit from the halfway line left touch line …….

Barton was trying to have a reasonable chat with ref at the end when the Palace player tried to jump in very aggressively. Joey was ushered away when it became clear he was not taking the guys sh**. It looked to me he was trying to blame the Palace player for Whelan's red and, not surprisingly, he took exception, Barton looked the aggressor to me and looked a right idiot having to be ushered away from a team of U23 players we'd just beaten fairly convincingly. Not surprised JB was angry, some of the Palace youngsters challenges were disgraceful , poor Jasper took a battering & must be bruised & aching all over. If the Palace youngsters are one of the most successful sides at their level in the country at the moment, perhaps they are not used to losing as they certainly lost their heads at times.

First win since Oxford United the result helps Barton retain his job for another week. What with the sacking of managers at the moment he must be relieved with the win.

Exactly. With his minder and mate Head Of Football Operations he is unsackable. They both got sacked from Fleetwood? Although that did seem to be after the owner ran out of money!!

The ref should have got hold of them much quicker to stop what was obviously going to happen later in the game with some of the challenges going in. I can’t believe they didn’t end the game with ten men, they were far more physical, but even so they couldn’t really lives with us and it shows the gulf between that type of football and ours. Good to see players get minutes, especially those coming back and really that’s all we can take out of these games I think. They’re an opportunity for minutes in players legs.

This is almost as funny as the PS1 thread years ago, he is impregnable he has employed the Mersey mafia, more chance of Wael leaving 😂😂

I thought that Whelan was holding their lad back, to stop him getting involved. Thought the same , Tilly If you look at it again, Whelan had his forearm around his neck. Might just be an unfortunate grab to pull the kiddie away. However, it was around his neck and probably warranted a red.

In the Bristol Live interview, Barton says Whelan is suspended (but only in this competition) - although he will appeal it. It is more annoying that Kilgour, Marquis and Jasper all picked up knocks. Hopefully they will all be available for selection on Saturday. Would be good to have Thomas, Gibson, Gibbons & Coburn in the squad too

www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joey-barton-shares-disdain-efl-7665215A rant from Joey Barton that I actually agree with... Joey Barton has blasted the EFL Trophy as a " nonsense competition" after Bristol Rovers' 2-0 win over Crystal Palace under-21s on Tuesday, saying " the sooner we're out of it, the better". "I thought they (Crystal Palace) were what the problem is in the modern game, an academy side that are miles away from producing people who can play in the league," he said. "They’re so far away, let’s be honest, so it kind of makes a mockery for me of what that Premier League 2 is.
"You hear me talk all the time about these big clubs stockpiling players and what player for them today… We wouldn’t take any of their players, we just wouldn’t, they're so far away. It’s a good opportunity for us to look at that because we do like to utilise the loan market but I was so surprised to see them.
"It’s easy for them because their games don’t matter. Their games are irrelevant and nobody cares about them, but we’ve got a proper game on Saturday when mortgages are on the line, real football, real men’s football. So to have a team of kids go out and leave late challenges on you is bizarre. The competition is about developing younger players."
"We don’t really want to play in this competition, I’ll level with you," Barton continued. "It’s a waste of our time because we get players suspended, you get players injured from nonsense tackles from young kids who are miles off playing men’s footy. I just don’t see why we should support it.
"Next game, I may well just play our kids because I can’t risk my first-team players getting injured against a bunch of kids who are miles off the level and trying to impress people who are watching by kicking senior players. It’s a nonsense competition.
"Who cares about it? It’s a nonsense competition, and when it’s officiated in that fashion it makes me even further devalue the competition. I’ve tried to support it in all my time but when I get officials like that who are basically on work experience sending my players off that don’t deserve to be sent off and all the while allowing young players to steam in and make stupid tackles and don’t book them or reprimand them because they’re young players, it’s a nonsense.
"We don’t take it seriously, so I said to the lads tonight go out and enjoy it because the opposition are inferior because they are a bunch of kids. If you take their teamsheet and look at it in five years’ time, some of those lads will be working in civilian jobs. They won’t be playing football. Youth teams are usually geared around the development of one or two players, so I get why the EFL have put the competition in, but you can see from my point of view, if I lose any real senior players, we’ve got a proper game at the weekend and real football to come."
"You try to do the right thing because if we don’t fulfil the quotas, we get fined and all the other nonsense that comes down the track, but you can see from our standpoint we’ve got a duty of care to fulfil our league campaign and play the best team we can on a Saturday in the league. Having this nonsense of a competition in the middle of it, when players can be injured and suspended now, it just makes me question it."
"Who is the competition for? Is it for Crystal Palace? Yeah, I think so. Is it for the referees and officials to gain experience? Yeah. It isn’t for senior players and senior teams, it’s just a deterrent to us. The sooner we’re out of it the better and I’m going to go forward carrying absolute disdain for the competition when referees officiate it like that."
