Both.
Can't the current badge incorporate the camp pirate officer cocking a leg on the ball, letting one off?

Posters keep suggesting the pirate is more marketable but when did the club last market anything with just the pirate theme? They sell the cross swords clothing range but they are produced by an external local clothes suppliers. I'd imagine most youngsters want something with the "Gas" shown on it rather than a pirate. Always been The Pirates and always will be. Thats our history and should never change. What's that got to do with the fact we don't seem to market the pirate theme, the whole marketing side of the club seems to be directed towards the gas and the quarters.

We don't market anything to do with BRFC outside of BRFC, what does changing the crest help?

Never heard reference to the Gas in the 60s or 70s up until I left Bristol in 1980. We always sang ‘Oh when the BLUES, go marching in…. Etc’ and Gas came later. No idea when.

Early to mid 80s, I'd say. I was called a Gashead in the mid 80s by City fans at school definitely as a derogatory term. I seem to recall us adopting it when we moved to Twerton. They then tried inverting the name as Sagheads. I guess it makes sense to them.....?!? 🥱

gas head was meant to be a derogatory term dreamed up by the dark side with ref to the gas works at Eastville which often gave rise to a smell drifting across the ground, it is a classic case of a negative being turned into An almighty positive by Rovers fans and must annoy the hell out of tother lot. we are though the pirates and should remain so imho.

Spot on Topper. I recall the regular group of Sh1!heads who used to turn up at Eastville after kick off and stand safely on the bridge into the car park behind the Tote End singing "He's only a poor little Gashead....." and the faithful 5,000 chanting back, "The Gas, The Gas, you'll never get rid of The Gas". I also remember the day the Queens Head mob deliberately arrived at The Tote late and ran them ragged.

You posted "early to mid 80's" but it was clearly well before that I'd say it was the late 70's. Given that we moved to Twerton in 1986 I can't see it took us the best part of a decade to adopt it ourselves, particularly as being a gashead was far more relevant to playing at Eastville than Twerton.

I can remember being at Bristol derby's and hearing "I can smell Gas" and wondering what the hell City fans were on about initially, the "gashead" tag developed later on.

Over the past 35 years following Rovers, Iv'e never heard anyone say up the Pirates!
IMO we are the Gas and feel gutted that the dandy pirate is the overall choice for the masses to continue with a mismatch for marketing and identity.
We are the Gas!
