Are we The Gas, The Pirates, or both ?
All the badge talk got me thinking, and I personally only ever refer to us as The Gas. The same seems true of rival fans and the TV and Press.
I don't want the badge to change but if we are looking at a rebrand "The Gas" somehow needs to be included.

Historically The Pirates and we should keep this name. No one sings songs about their official nickname do they? Pirates is a good nickname compared to robins, reds, chairboys etc!! The Gas probably should be incorporated into merch and maybe the badge too as it is what we all identify with.

Totally agree, the Gas has to be on the badge in some form. Will be disappointed if it’s left out

Both
Pirates is historical and I have no recollection of reference to the Gas when I went to Eastville in the 70's, it's a much more modern day thing and thanks to the Darkside for giving it to us!

Think the Gas nickname came about 1980 …… happy to be corrected if anyone else remembers it earlier or later ?

Whilst I’m from the Pirates era I’m so glad the sh** rebranded us - in retrospect they must hate it. So sorry Sh1!heads your feeble attempt to rebrand us to the sags ain’t never going to work.

If two nicknames are good enough for West Brom, The Throstles & The Baggies, then why can't we have two.

The problem with “The Gas” is how do you market that? With a blue flame I guess? Whilst the Pirates is very marketable and also very kid friendly.
Agree with others, that we’re both, but a blue flame on our badge instead of a Pirate would just seem… wrong.

For me, i always loved our official nickname but it’s evident that, if ever we have appeared on TV or are spoken of in the media then we are more often referred to as the gas and gasheads.

I think that there is room for both monikers. Official nickname (oxymoron alert) links to the club name (see post on crest thread), our history and has marketing potential for all age ranges. (Pirates are always popular with children…not sure Robins are!). I see the term Gashead as more of a supporters reference and relates to urban history rather than a club/team descriptor. (NB: The gas reference is a bit more difficult to take beyond the name in terms of branding/imagery as there’s nothing tangible only a gasometer or gas bottle: sexy, I think not).
Take Spurs for example. Named Spurs after 14th C Sir Henry Percy, better known as “Harry Hotspur” who had land in Tottenham and liked cock fighting, hence the cockerel on the crest. Nickname “the lilywhites” because of the white shirts but the supporters refer to themselves as the “Y**” Army, a derogatory term originally hurled as abuse at their Jewish fan base but taken up and embraced as a badge of honour. All those terms coexist and I don’t see Daniel Levy trying to consolidate them and erase the original identity of the club.

Neither has their sad attempt at calling us the 14 ers. The seem to have totally forgotten that we never went bankrupt, leaving local businesses going out of business or very close. As Clive Dunn used to say, in dads army, they don’t like it up em 😂

images.app.goo.gl/BrWihpMV4HzC7jnX7We could have a new mascot! Kinda prefer the pirate though, and I like how we're more like Bristol Rovers: The Pirates aka. The Gas. I vote both, blue flame branding and mascot would suck
