In case you haven't seen the announcement on the website:- Bristol Rovers is pleased to announce the appointment of Jack Tomlinson as the club’s new secretary. At twenty-one years of age, Jack is the youngest secretary in the entire football league, but has already amassed experience in the same role at Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town. In his role, Jack will be responsible for an array of tasks, such as pre-match preparation, organising player travel and accommodation, ticketing, EFL compliance – including documentation, announcements and that all-important transfer paperwork – as well as general admin and everything required to ensure Rovers is run as efficiently as possible. Jack, who hails from The Wirral, said: “I’m really looking forward to getting started at Rovers. Once I got a call to come in and have a chat about the role, everything moved quickly. There will be a lot to get done, taking over from the previous Club Secretary, who had been in the role for over 20 years so, hopefully, I can bring a modern way of working into the club with new ideas.” Rovers CEO Tom Gorringe said: “We are delighted for Jack to be joining us. He fits the culture that we are trying to create here perfectly and his energy, experience and desire to push for continual improvement will no doubt benefit our football administration. "Despite his age, Jack has a wealth of experience and has already shown his value in his first week of service. Jack will no doubt be a big asset for the club over the coming years and I am sure you will all join me in welcoming him to the club and wishing him the best in his new role.” Club Website Announcement

That's a lot for any twenty one year old to take on. I wonder if he could do a bit of defence coaching if he gets a spare moment.

Fair play to the lad and only 20 years old with 3 big football teams to his current CV! Being so young I wonder why he's now on his 3rd club? Hope and wish him all the best for 2023 UTG!

He did 2 years at Oldham, moving up through the ranks, held the post of Senior Safeguarding Officer there as well. Only 4 months at Swindon, maybe the Liverpool Mafia made him an offer he couldn't refuse! Did an Internship at Tranmere Rovers, based around finance and commercial activities, so he's been very football focussed. Best of luck to him.

You'd hope it's down to him being ambitious, the modern way seems to be to move jobs frequently to get on. Although employing somebody from the Wirral does add to the suggestions we're being taken over by the Scouse Mafia.

Oh my God...not another one.
Guess he'll get a lift to and from the Wirral more easily here than at Swindon.
Third job as a Club Secretary by the age of 21 takes some doing.

It’s a very technical position ensuring regulations and EFL protocols are followed so I hope that he has enough experience and knowledge to do this. At 21 years of age he’s taken on a huge post and makes me think that many of the duties a secretary does may well be taken over by TG in the short term and that he will, for some time be secretary in name only and be shadowing TG. And this idea of bringing “a modern way of working” into the club. What’s that supposed to mean? Just because he’s 21 doesn’t necessarily mean he will bring modern ways just as someone in their 40s doesn’t mean they aren’t working in a “modern way.” Whatever “modern ways” mean. I’d say that making a comment like that gives away his inexperience. Best not to criticise, even by implication, your predecessor. And TG, I like you and what you’ve done and appreciate your willingness to communicate on those occasions I’ve had to email you but…. don’t tell me that anyone at the age of 21 has a “wealth of experience”. They may have had several experiences but no one at the age of 21 has had a wealth of experience! Anyway, good luck to him, I hope it goes well. UTG!

He is going to need a lot of guidance, regardless All the procedures are clearly set out in the EFL handbook, a weighty tome but you'll find most of what you need to know, clearly indexed. I was in my last job for 18 years, I always kept up with the new IT packages and internal systems, and was the "go to" person regarding obscure bits of legislation, as most scenarios had arisen at least once while I was there. However, I will admit that my "zing" was diminishing and, when I left, I felt that new blood would freshen things up in ways that I probably wouldn't have thought of.

Perhaps but when you left you would have taken that 18 years of experience and knowledge with you. I bet it was missed. I’m sure your successor would have had a thorough in-house training to prepare them for the job. I hope our new secretary has had something similar by someone. Presumably not our previous secretary. 😉 UTG!

Yes, my knowledge was missed, although it was still possible for people to find the answers for themselves - they needed to research it rather than just asking me! Jack has carried out the Club Secretary role elsewhere for more than a year, so will have already carried out a lot of the regular procedures. Prior to that he was in an administrative role at Oldham, so knows what happens further down the chain too. Look at how a lot of things have been modernised and improved since TG came to Rovers, yes, it hasn't all gone smoothly but I would say that the club is far more professional than it was under Harmer or Staynes.

Tilly, that’s why I said I think it likely that he will be shadowing someone, presumably TG, for the foreseeable future. Yes Tilly I agree with you regarding TG compared to Starnes and Hamer. That’s why I said I liked him but he does like to paint a picture that reflects what he wants to achieve and what he hopes the situation is rather than what it sometimes is! Not a criticism just an observation. I really hope it all goes well and that Jack does a great job. I’m sure given support and guidance he will do what has to be done. UTG!
