Not one of your points shows he's a great guitarist. I was answering KP's question. To understand what a great guitarist he is you only have to listen to some of the hundreds of records or live recordings. I can recommend some to you if you wish? I am sure when he passes he will be hailed by many as the greatest, of course that won't be everyone's opinion but it will be mine I grew up listening to Queen, and I still do, so I know how good they are and May is a great guitarist and made them one of the best bands ever, but is he the best? Hmm, that's a lot to ask. Not for for me, but then I like Johnny Marr so what do I know.

Colston hall, a few years back and with his female bassist. I was truly awestruck. Hendrix was never my cup of tea but Twitter is full of people who saw both , saying beck had a wider range of styles You've hit on it KP - I always thought that it was the breadth of styles that set him apart. There are a lot of rock guitarists I like and admire but always thought he edged it. Apologies for going on but his solos on amused to death are sublime and he knew how to leave us wanting more. No ego at all is how I viewed him

I do not comment in the guitar legacy group I am in as I keep being called ignorant and much worse, all because I do not recognise Hendrix as the GOAT. Some of his stuff I just way OTT for me although I do still love some of Prince’s content

He plays a superb solo in that and I could listen ad nauseam I see you can’t sleep either. Glad I have something to write about

I was the same up until I saw him live and I have never been to another gig where it affected so much change in my opinion. Left me with goosebumps and really wanting so much more. His warm up band were a German rockabilly group, the baseballs. Even they were good

Some of his stuff I just way OTT for me although I do still love some of Prince’s content Well not quite, I enjoy lots of different styles of music and as a guitarist, I appreciate and listen to many different guitarists. Variety is the spice of life! There is no substitute for sitting down with a guitar and trying to work out from a technical and musical point of view what the artist is doing and then trying to play it yourself. There is no point in arguing that this player is better or greater than another. There's arguments above that one player is better than the other because of achievements and that argument is ridiculous because while one player exercised his art and innovation through a band with a commercial outlook, the other stuck to his principles and avoided the commercial path. That doesn't make one player better/greater than the other. For me what makes a player great is anything that includes innovation, breaking the rules, taking guitar in previously unexplored territory etc. Sometimes innovation is just playing, sometimes it's use of gear, ie amps, pedals/effects, sometimes it's both playing and gear. But for me it has to always be playing in a way that serves the song and be tasteful. Speed and dexterity are fine but must be musical with taste, 100 notes where 1 will do is not good. Let's not argue about who is best or the greatest. Just appreciate a guitarists art even if you are not a fan of their music.

Another who left us too soon Saw him in his rock days and when he went back to his blues roots. I recall Hammersmith Odeon (I know it was the Apollo, but it's always been the Odeon right?) Touring off the back of After Hours which followed up Still Got The Blues. Gary was phenomenal that night, he wrung that neck from a roar to a whisper. Of everything he could have finished with, he chose Jumpin' At Shadows played on Greeny, good grief, took everything down to an understated whisper, minimal playing maximum use of every note. He was absolutely sublime and his tone was drenched in pure feel. It was unforgettable

His innovative use of the echoplex was incredible and he wrote some of the most emotive songs i have ever heard yet many will not know of him as he was a cult figure who stayed on the university circuit. Solid air is still my all time favourite album and the small hours is my favourite track, closely flowed by head and heart.

Beck May Page Clapton Van Halen Gilmour … I have seen all of them, some several times i.e. May and Page, but as a un-sung guitar hero I would rate Andy Latimer (Camel) and his Les Paul as one on the greats. The who is the best debate ? can never be solved, you just have to accept that we are all different and all have our own opinion, and that’s how it should be. God bless Mr Beck he was one of the true greats. As is Beckingham - fleetwood Mac, see what I mean, it’s an endless debate 😉. . Oh yes the great Andy Latimer what a guitar player he is, Snowgoose Moonmadness 👌
