Beck May Page Clapton Van Halen Gilmour … I have seen all of them, some several times i.e. May and Page, but as a un-sung guitar hero I would rate Andy Latimer (Camel) and his Les Paul as one on the greats. The who is the best debate ? can never be solved, you just have to accept that we are all different and all have our own opinion, and that’s how it should be. God bless Mr Beck he was one of the true greats. As is Beckingham - fleetwood Mac, see what I mean, it’s an endless debate 😉. . Oh yes the great Andy Latimer what a guitar player he is, Snowgoose Moonmadness 👌 Jan Ackerman,Kaz lux

Try manipulating a single note like he did, Mick Taylor ? No comparison, none at all

Do you like Jeff Beck? That's up to you. But Jeff was respected by every guitarist who understood what his playing meant. I watched Jeff at the Nec once, accompanied by Gary Moores brother, Cliff and we were both shocked to the core as to how incredible he was. As we left, Cliff said "I hope Gary doesn't see this, it'll kill him".

Some excellent discussion here on guitarists and their merits. Many greats have been mentioned and there are many more.
Having been fortunate enough to see Jeff Beck live on 4 occasions (including at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago) he was indeed unique in his playing style. Hank Marvin was an early pioneer of the tremolo bar on the Fender Strat but Jeff Beck took it to a whole new level.
Was he the greatest? Certainly he's in my top 3 along with Hendrix and David Gilmour but Jimmy Page is right up there too.
If you fancy listening to a 'current' top guitarist check out Joe Bonamassa.
Rest in peace Jeff Beck, I still find it hard to believe you've gone but your guitar playing will live forever.

"In my time as Editor of Total Guitar it has been my pleasure to interview Brian May on several occasions. Once, when our readers voted him the greatest guitarist of all time. Again, when readers voted his solo in Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody as the greatest of all time. And again, with the passing of Eddie Van Halen, when Brian wished to pay tribute to his friend and reminisce about their collaboration in the 80s with the Star Fleet Project.
Now, with this month’s cover story, I believe we have delivered exactly what we promised on the cover: the ultimate Brian May interview. He is celebrating another major milestone in the history of Queen – the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut album. And as he recalls the key moments of their amazing career, the focus is on the songs that he wrote for Queen – including We Will Rock You, the mother of
all rock anthems and The Show Must Go On, in which the group’s legendary singer Freddie Mercury delivered his last great performance.
Alongside this huge in-depth interview, we have a lengthy tutorial on how to play like Brian."

Last time I looked this was about Jeff Beck, not Brian May
I have a tee shirt, on the front it states I *ing hate Queen, on the back it states outlaw this pompous operatic bullshit, it's just so unnecessary !!!
Designed to be offensive and let others know my views on Queen. And by the way (Dr if you don't mind.....) Brian May isn't that good a guitarist, plenty in front of him, music is subjective after all
Do we have to have every thread with music involved turned into an I love Queen sort of terrorist post?
Rant over.

Rant over. I like Queen but this is about Jeff Beck who has just died and by extension, about guitar playing. Brian May is certainly an inventive guitar player but he’s not an improviser and doesn’t really have a great feeling/affinity for the blues so I don’t think he really enters this conversation at all. That’s not a criticism of what he does, but you can’t really put him up there with the top guys of Beck’s genre.
