The truth of it is we're currently in a culture clash where fans are either gonna have to embrace and defend loud, passionate, ugly football or submit to all-seated, polite, consumer entertainment. This has obviously been going on for years but we have so little left to defend that it's kind of a shame for all of us to turn on some kids that wanted to inject some excitement into what is pretty well accepted to be our rowdy terrace for the sake of avoiding a slap on the wrist from the FA.
When does it end? When the FA decides we're not allowed a club song that references suicide will we start calling people that sing Irene idiots who are putting the club in danger? It's a damn shame imo.

Rangers have nothing to do with Irish immigrants and weren't specifically set up as a Proddy club. They were an ordinary run of the mill Glasgow side who were then latched onto by those who wanted to react against the Irish Catholic immigrant team across town. And so a poisonous rivalry was born. Fields of Athenry is about a man who was imprisoned for stealing food for his children during the famine, not specifically anti-English really but about one of the great tragedies of Irish history (which the British could have done a hell of a lot more to prevent but that's another story). Fwiw, I think criminalising songs is silly and it won't do much to address the underlying poison of sectarianism in the west of Scotland. Sorry you are quite correct on rangers( i have corrected my initial post) , i will disagree about the fields of atherny (was written in the 70's and adopted by the republicans). i will also agree the spud famine is fascinating to me as both sides were to blame and your right tis another discussion entirely

The sooner we rid football of the idiots the better in my opinion. i wanna take children/grandchildren to a place they feel at ease. Not have to listen to old wives tales of how it historically used to be - it wasn't, it just had a mindless couple of decades that some people are still living off the back of, nah lets bring some decency back and the families and facilities will follow.

All this football should be played at home on game box's or what ever they are called, oh hang on.........more accidents happen in the home than any other place ! Best keep it as it is, the odd thing is always going to happen with a few thousand people in a small space.

So in reality football is probably going through one of its quietest periods trouble wise For some football is about being rowdy, feeling slightly intimidated in your own end, loud, not cold ,seated , sterile, quieter than a morgue. It's always been about working yer arse off during the week and letting off steam on a weekend, in reality it's only since the phrase P.C was invented that a few want it sterile and quiet, was taken by my aunt down the tote as a small child . im still alive, its a game traditionally followed by the working/lower classes. Again people keep saying health and safety, as a society we seem to be getting too soft, back when i was a young apprentice, if you got injured you didnt go crying to H&S you picked yourself up said that hurt shook it off and got on with it and learnt from your own mistakes.

Why has class got anything to do with it? Working people want comfortable leisure activities too. Also the part about football being historically about agro and a way to settle scores is both untrue and a non-sequitur. If it was a way to get even and intimidate others why were varisity matches the origins of league football? If it's a way of settling scores the settling was done on the pitch not through hooliganism so the theory that that excuses intimidation and a smoke bomb is just nonsense.

think it was as far back as the 13th century that football originated ,wasnt till much later that it became an 11 a side game. or are you going to say that is untrue as well As for class the origins of the game were firmly rooted in the working classes playing and spectating, and will you also deny that the league origins was restricted to upper middle /upper class as how many working class people attended universities back in the 1800's, besides if you look at old photos how would you describe the crowds mainly working, mainly middle or mainly upper classes. have a read of the origins of football its all out there

Just the fact that the authorities - or any of us - have to have a view on such a thing at all is depressing. Unless you really think a smoke bomb can set light to solid concrete. Is there anything at all now that isn't "worrying"? The infantilising of adults in this country continues apace. Yeah solid concrete or y'know crisp bags, paper cups, pasty bags, ticket stubs, 50/50 tickets all heat resistant stuff like that. Yes, and the crisp packet could be smokey bacon. No smoke without fire. For god's sake let's be careful out there.
