I don't know much about the bloke, he didn't stand out in the away game against Woking but then again, nobody did. Delighted that we are taking promising talent from lower down as opposed to the seasoned pros from league 1 etc Welcome and good luck me clarke Considering that both defences looked excellent that day, and cancelled each other out, I'd say he had a pretty good game without anyone 'noticing' him that much. opinions, opinions. having said that I was watching the game from the top of a tree

Woking fan's view: Would be disappointing if it's true (that he's signing for BRFC). He was one of a few players who didn't re-sign at the same time as everyone else, presumably to look for a FL contract (with us waiting if he didn't get offered anything) - fits in with what he's doing so whether it's genuine or invented who knows. He's solid, played 30 games as a result of frequent injuries but his absence was costly for us at times. Quite fast and is a useful right-back as well as his natural position at centre-back, although he can look a bit suspect when attacking down the flanks (which could be more costly against better opposition in League 2.) Often pulling shirts as well which gives away lots of needless fouls. A top-level Conference defender for sure and he'd certainly do a good job for you but I personally doubt he can play consistently in the Football League currently, but it remains to be seen of course. is he Tom Lockyer's twin?

I assumed that things were waiting for DC to get back off holiday . Thursdays always used to be the day when the bigger announcements got made - so today seems to be it. Thursday is the weekly press conference, where hacks come to listen to DC, and ask questions.

Bristol Rovers sign Woking defender James Clarke 16:02, 11 June 2015 By Chris Dyke Woking's James Clarke is relishing his switch to league football - but admits he is leaving the club with a heavy heart. The out-of-contract 25-year-old defender finally put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Conference play-off winners Bristol Rovers yesterday. It completed six months of some uncertainty for the former Salisbury City star, who had been a target for Rovers' ex-Whites boss Darrell Clarke since the turn of the year. "Rovers came in for me in January but the clubs couldn't agree a fee," said the player, who featured 37 times for the Cards during an injury-hit campaign after signing last summer.
Asked about his move to the Memorial Ground, his first Football League club, Clarke went on: "It's always been my ambition. Yes, it's taken me until I'm 25 so it's a case of better late than never."So will he miss Kingfield? "Massively," he insisted. "They [Woking] were very good to me, the players and the fans were great but this was too much of a good opportunity to miss." Clarke said he had talks with Cards boss Garry Hill about a new contract, but commented: "This was something I was willing to hold out for for the whole summer." Reflecting on his season-long stint in Surrey, he praised physio Gareth Thomas, who he got to know as well as anyone. He conceded: "It was probably the worst season I've had injury-wise, but I feel I played some of my best football to date." So would he have joined Rovers had they missed out at Wembley? "I would have to be in that situation to know to be honest," he replied. "It was criminal them being in the Conference, but I would probably have still made the switch because everyone wants to be full-time."
On Woking's prospects, Clarke reckoned: "I expect them to be pushing again. If they can start well like they did last season I've no doubt they can make the play-offs or even win it. The league will be wide open and Garry has kept some key players." In an interview on the Rovers website, first-team boss Darrell Clarke confirmed: "I tried to sign James in the last window from Woking but the fee was too high so we are delighted to bring him in on a free transfer." James Clarke becomes the fourth player to leave the Cards this summer following Kevin Betsy, Adam Newton and John Nutter - who have all retired - plus Josh Payne, who joined league rivals Eastleigh last month. Centre-back Joe McNerney is also chasing a move to a Football League club. Hill currently has nine players on the club's books, including new signings Nick Hamann and Godfrey Poku. www.getsurrey.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bristol-rovers-sign-woking-defender-9435898

Another mention of injuries which is a bit concerning, but trusting DC to have done his due diligence.

Hey Folks,
Oxford City fan here (thats City...not the Yellow lot!).....and im well Happy to see Clarkey be given a league shot by you boys, Love to see him do well for you!
Bit more info for you to dwell on....
Clarkey joined Oxford City after being surprisingly released by United having made a small number of 1st team starts as a youngster. I think the signing of James Constable to United sealed his fate as the two had a bust up in a game when they played against each other previous. He played for us from 2008 - 2011 making 151 appearances and was part of our promotion winning team when we went from Southern League to the Conference North in 2011 before moving to Salisbury.
Woking I know saw him as a Centre back, but we never played him there and he always played Right back for us. Unfortunately I don't think we saw his best as he likes to make forward runs, but our manager at the time was very defensive minded and played the flat static back four, not allowing Clarkey to get forward....but when he did get forward he always looked dangerous!
He's quite a quick and strong player and was definitely a cut above the vast majority players at our level and surprised us that we kept him for 3 seasons. He Loves a challenge and is quite combative, not a dirty player, but he'll take your number if you give him reason to.
The question mark is his fitness in regards to injuries, He always had some ailment with us but played through it and actually very rarely missed a game.....sadly that sort of thing catches up with you as time goes on.
Either way give him a chance and you can be sure he'll give you 110% every time!
How his ability translates in the league against better players is an unknown and a challenge he has deserved to have a go at for a good few years now and im sure everyone at City will hope to see him do well!
Good luck for the New Season!

Great post OCF, much appreciated and good luck for the new season.
Comments on Clarke from my Woking supporting friend:
"We didn't see the best of him. He's also quite small for a centre-back and let the ball bounce over his head too much. Nothing special in my eyes but he's decent on the ball and versatile enough to play well in a few positions. Will do ok!"

I said this in September last year - semi-pro footballers appear to be a damn sight more professional than so called 'professional footballers'. Agreed. There are lots of good conference players who can make the step up. Some won't work out but they come in on shorter contracts and a lot less money than the journeymen. Building a team of young hungry footballers desperate for a chance in the league along with the experience players we have who still give it their all.
