Defender joins Peterborough Michael Smith has today left Bristol Rovers. The defender, who was twice voted Rovers’ Player of the Year, has joined League One club Peterborough on a three year deal. Chairman Nick Higgs said: “It is with great regret that we have to let Michael go. “However, we held on to get the best deal we could from Peterborough, and negotiated a six figure fee, which will remain undisclosed, as well as a number of further conditions.
“Michael has been a great servant to the club, and we wish him success for the rest of his career.” Michael joined Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2011 and made his Rovers league debut on the opening day of the 2011/12 season. He scored his first senior goal for the club in a 2012/13 Capital One cup tie, against Ipswich, at Portman Road. Manager Darrell Clarke said: “We would like thank Michael for all of his efforts during his time at the club. “He is a fantastic professional and we wish him every success in the future.” Everyone at Bristol Rovers would like to echo Darrell’s sentiments and wish Michael well. The inevitable has happened but it is still tinged with a bit of sadness.
All the best Smudger. You've been brilliant for this club and will always get a fantastic reception should you return.

Yep, echo this. All our young players would do well to take a leaf out of his book. A true pro - never involved in any off the field "activities", trained hard and always gave 100% on the pitch. He was a bright spark in a very dark season. Sounds like we've got the best deal we could - I'd hazard a guess it's around the £225k mark - good deal for us (given we're now non-league) and Posh won't go wrong for that money either. Will obviously always get an incredibly warm reception should he ever return. All the best Michael Smith. On the brightside, I'm guessing we'll now be announcing a signing or two before the day is out........

Best of luck Smudge, fully deserve league one football. Score against the s**t and your legacy will be complete.
Now DC sign up Higgins and Turley before someone else does!

Truly saddenned by this but not unexpected. Always gave 100% and will be missed, I sincerely wish him all the very best for his future with the Posh and hope he claims his first full senior cap for N.Ireland in the near future.
Will always be a gashead

Can't believe why Peter Parker on the other site scoffs at us saying we have no need to sell. What should we say, we are bankrupt please buy our player?
Well done the board for holding out as best you could.

Can't begrudge him this move in the slightest, never a Conference player.
Wish him all the best. Top player and top bloke. Hope to see him in the Championship or above one day.
Hopefully this paves the way for us to bring one or two in now (Higgins & Turley)?

I think this is good for Michael, Us and (although not bothered) for Posh. Hopefully this will allow others to join later today or early next week.
My main question is to CG ... who are the four women at the bottom of your sig?

So before we were budgeted to sign a central defender, a couple of midfielders and possibly a loan striker (DC already has one in the bad if he needs one).
So if Higgins is replacing Smith, and Turley is central defender, won't losing Smith give us a bit more scope with the budget? Even if the black hole in the finances swallows the £200k transfer fee, Smithy was still on a healthy wage that would cover three of our current signings...
As for MS, good servant, although I found myself wanting him to leave in recent days so that we could move on and get the squad in place for next season.

In theory you are right mate but you know how tight our board can and probably will be.

All the best Smudger. Gutted he's gone but inevitable given our position. Simply too good for us now.

But frustrating to see so many ex players playing 1 or 2 leagues above us. Shows we had enough talent there I think, just players with the wrong attitudes.

Most of us were asking where the Lambert money went. We did well on the fees and it seems very well in Hoskins as he has been injured a hell of a lot.

If blame was to be apportioned properly then it was the players who did not play to their ability. Ah well, move along, nothing to see here
