I really hope that the fans stick behind the boys if we don't get off to the best of starts. We have a difficult start, home to Grimsby, away to Martin Allens Barnet and another away match after.
On remembering Readings terrible start before winning the Championship a couple of years back, and some other similar scenarios, I checked out Luton last season.
They finished top, winning the league by 19 points and lost just 5 matches.
1 Luton Town (C) (P) 46 30 11 5 102 35 +67 101
Their first 8 games of last season?
Lost 1-0 Won 2-0 Drew 1-1 Drew 0-0 Drew 0-0 Won 2-0 Drew 0-0 Lost 2-0
I'm enjoying DC's brand of football and players giving 100% with better attitudes. I really hope they get a decent crack of the whip.

We need to get off to a flyer, DC has had plenty of time to put a squad together. That aside i dont mean sack him if we lose our first game but let set out expectations high

Hmmmm, don't think we're capable of 101 points, especially if we start like they did...9 pts from the first 3 games will suit me fine...

But fans getting on the players backs could do a lot of damage in the first few games.

If we have a slow start it will get very nasty, fans havent forgiven the club for the two relegations so its inevitable. Agree that the players need our support and im hoping we are able to create atmosphere at games

What we need is a solid start. Solid. By no means three wins on the trot but just a solid foundation that shows potential. Build on that and see what happens. Cant see us going up this year regardless so I'm happy to just make a good solid impact and play the long game over the season. If we can make a real promotion challenge then so much the better. I have been impressed with DCs commitment to signing the right type of player. It has put us back a little in preseason but it will be worth it in the end.

The problem is, a lot of people say they are happy with a decent season, top 10 or whatever. But even when the team is on course to hit that, people find fault in the tactics and will bitch and moan regardless. I appreciate its a pretty tough time for everyone at the minute, but getting on the players backs will never help. Especially when it looks like we will finally have a team of 100%ers.

Top ten ? We should be aiming for promotion, we have a big fan base and a big budget and until recently were a league 1 club. Everyone should set high expectations. If we dont go up this year we will be in real trouble

Our season will be made over the next 14 days. Get 4-5 of the right players in and we will be a real force to be reckoned with. If Turley and Higgins sign then that will be the defence sorted. Still feel we need another striker and 2 midfield players at least one one being an out and out winger with pace.

Do you expect us to go up Dins? We should go up but the way the club is run it would involve a lot of luck and chemistry. I dont think the squadis there yet but i will reasses come Grimsby.

If you look at the stats, the chances of us going straight back up are very slim. Its actually been 11 seasons since Carlisle United bounced straight back. 2004 | Carlisle United | Promoted 2005 | 1 Year | 2004 | York City | Promoted 2012 | 8 Years | 2005 | Cambridge United
| Promoted 2014 | 9 Years | 2005 | Kidderminster Harriers
| Still non-league |
| 2006 | Oxford United
| Promoted 2010 | 4 Years | 2006 | Rushden & Diamonds
| Still non-league |
| 2007 | Boston United
| Still non-league |
| 2007 | Torquay United
| Promoted 2009 | 2 Years | 2008 | Mansfield Town | Promoted 2013 | 5 Years | 2008 | Wrexham | Still non-league |
| 2009 | Chester City | Still non-league |
| 2009 | Luton Town | Still non-league | 5 Years | 2010 | Grimsby Town | Still non-league |
| 2010 | Darlington
| Still non-league |
| 2011 | Stockport County | Still non-league |
| 2011 | Lincoln City | Still non-league |
| 2012 | Hereford United | Still non-league |
| 2012 | Macclesfield Town | Still non-league |
| 2013 | Barnet | Still non-league |
| 2013 | Aldershot Town | Still non-league |

Barnet, Aldershot etc are tin pot clubs. We average 6000 a week. No excuses, we must go up and lets stop making excuses for why we wont before a ball is kicked. Out expectations are rudiculously low.

I think you are right, I know people are being careful but we really must aim high or we could die as a club !

Playing 3-5-2 requires a solid back three and a lot of graft from the wide midfielders. According to some reports I've read, Parkes and Brown aren't yet comfortable with this formation. Would anyone care to comment?

It's so hard making predictions and many of us do it with so much reluctance because we've been bitten on the backside for thinking we're a big fish in a small pond on a couple of occasions before now. You'd really like to think that's the case now, but I think even thinking it now makes some nervy. As said before, a solid start is what we need (minimum). Good displays and hopefully a few points from Grimsby, Barnet and altrincham. Morale boosting victory at home to Telford to take us into the Monday game at fgr should hopefully see us top 7 or so. By mid September we'll have got a few of the ex-league clubs out the way and we'll have a run of the likes of the alfretons and nuneatons of the division which look winnable (on paper!)

That is a lack of respect for clubs that have been better run than ours and have done well to exceed where their modest resources should put them. Does not matter how many fans we get through the gate if within 15 minutes they are creating a poisonous atmosphere for the team to be playing in because their expectations are based on history, tradition and having "considerably more money than yow" to nick someone's catchphrase. The purse strings have been tightened and whilst the money has IMO been spent wisely I have no idea how these lads will play on a mud pile in Braintree or a sandpit in Southport. Getting behind a team of honest triers and stayers rather than thoroughbreds has always been our forte. Let's just make sure they get an encouraging stage to perform on when they are at home!
