22 players,im including broom in that number but not lucas, greenslade and more,,challenge for dc is to maintain team spirit,,also not realistic to sign anymore without moving players out so i dont see any more signings until near the end of the transfer window. mildenhall leadbitter lockyer hartley brown
bodin mansell lines moore
taylor gaffney our best team as i see it

With no emergency loan market we need atleast 2 fit every position. So 22 would be the minimum.

We should be alright at right back though with two there, Mildenhall using his strength and height whilst leads pushes on. I'm not sure about Chris lines on his own in the middle though. Nah fuc{ it lets go with it, we're Bristol Rovers we do what we want. We might need a keeper though.

Not sure Moore deserves to get in ahead of Montano. I have a really good feeling about Monty this season.

Some good options now for width something Rovers struggled with a while back, less than 2 seasons ago the wide players were Gosling and Dave Martin...
As regards to the squad being to big,I think a new goalkeeper is needed,a ball winning central midfielder who can pass the ball about, a left sided defender as cover and a big fast striker ( unless DC plans to play Bodin in the middle more). I hope that Broom and Jamie Lucas start getting some playing time this season, not full games but being brought in gradually.

As I see it, taking a basic 442 -
Gk 1 from Mildenhall / Puddy
Rb 1 from Leadbitter / Clarke / Little Cb 2 from lockyer / mcCrystal / Hartley / Clarke / Kilgour Lb 1 from Brown / Greenslade
Rw 1 from Bodin / Gosling / Broom Playmaker 1 from Lines Ballwinner 1 from Mansell / Sinclair / O Clarke Lw 1 from Montano / Lawrence / Moore
Striker 2 from Taylor / Gaffney / James / Easter / Lucas
James Clarke is mentioned twice as obvious utility defender, maybe Lawrence or Gosling could cover Cm too.
Have I missed anyone?

So is the squad too big as per the OP? I think the retention of so many conference players affects recruitment for sure. There has been too much sentiment imo, but somebody did make a good point yesterday about certain players performances during the run in. We have proven team spirit but I'm not sure if team spirit will be enough to rely on if we have sticky patch at a higher standard. It certainly won't tame our fanbase who will run out of patience if results don't impress.

DC promised the players all new contracts if we stayed up, that was a huge carrot dangler to push us over the line last season. DC is a man of his word and couldn't go back on that.

Yes and as you say, it worked a treat. I guess those players offered extensions will be on realistic contracts anyway. I'd like to think DC hasn't hamstrung himself that way. I just can't see Macca or Manse being anything other than dressing room influences this season but I am all for being proven wrong.

How could I forget, thanks. There are a couple of former youth players too but I don't know enough about them to know if they are likely to play or what type of player they are.

It's a tough one tbf. I do kind of agree with you. Maybe we can slowly ease them out? As harsh as that sounds.

Both of them (Thomas and Malpas) were highly regarded at youth level but both have had injury set backs and been shipped out on loan since.

I actually think in terms of established players it looks more like this - which is not a huge squad.
Gk 1 from Mildenhall / Puddy
Rb 1 from Leadbitter / J Clarke ( cover Lockyear but no one wants him moved from centre back ) Cb 2 from Lockyer / mcCrystal / Hartley ( cover J Clarke but counting him as RB ) Guess we may well play 3 at back and wing backs at times. Lb 1 from Brown
Wing 1 from Bodin / Gosling Centre Mid Lines / Mansell / Sinclair ( cover O Clarke / Lawrence ) Wing 1 from Montano / Moore
Think the likes of Montano and Moore have played on both sides in pre-season.
Striker 2 from Taylor / Gaffney / Easter / Harrison ( cover James )
Based on what I have seen so far of pre-season Broom may play a part - really not sure any of the other youngsters are L1 standard yet. James may be a first team player but reserving judgement until I see more of him.
