Quite a few on here saying Gosling and Easter are going to make an impact - Wow ! I doubt if either will start more than 6 -8 games personally. I would say that they may not even make the bench most weekends.
Starting line -up might be :
New Keeper Leadbitter Lockyer Hartley Brown Bodin Lines Mansell Moore Gaffney Taylor
So 8 players who started the last game and most of the games in the run-in.
Subs: Mildenhall Clarke J Harrison Sinclair James Montano Lawrence
There will be a quite a few disappointed players not seeing much action - that's of course if we don't pick up injuries or players lose form.

So it's 7 until we ever sign a new keeper? I'd imagine Harrion, James & Montano will be happy to be impact subs/fight for a start. Lawrence, Gosling & Easter just glad to be part of a Div 1 squad! Don't forget we were v. lucky with injuries last season and also DC likes to change formations game to game even half to half.

Its all about opinions and DC said he needed 4-5 new quality players if EVERYONE signed. Parkes didn't so that would be 5-6 of which we have signed 3 of which I would say Hartley and Moore are quality players. I would expect three more players to sign and that IMO would give us as good a chance as anyone of a top 7 finish. Easter to me at the end of the season looked a lot fitter and early indications seem to be that he looks very fit in which case he could well be good enough to start. This is a vital season for Ollie Clarke, Harrison, Sinclair ,Gosling,Lawrence,Mansell,Montano and McCrystal to prove they are good enough and of course Mildenhall as well. Like last season there were lots of players who had to prove they were good enough for League 2 and with the step up the position is the same this year. There will certainly be competition for places but of the youngsters I will be very surprised if any other than Broom are good enough to be in the squad.

Agree 1973 for the first time in many seasons I really think we have the base of a very good squad for League 1 level but really need a bit more quality and strength in the central midfield. Ideally I would like to see another striker to challenge Gaffney and another defender and goalkeeper would not go amiss. In an ideal world the side should be allowed time to gell before Scunthorpe and any signings completed this week. This IMO could be the difference between a good start and our usual slow jittery start.

I agree re CM but we've already got 6 or 7 CM's so not sure how we fit another one into the squad before 1 or 2 of the other's depart/show they aren;t up to Div 1 level.

Darrell works with these players day in day out, between him and his management team they have improved the players and they need to have a balanced squad if everybody was a "1st choice" we would never keep a 'happy' squad. Any squad needs a blend of senior pro's, developing stars, reliable cover and youth potential. We are football fans hence we can be fickle & quick to judge. I have seen every friendly and whilst things haven't clicked (Weston was the best, Exeter 1st half the worse) we haven't used the right blend of players yet. Darrell will know that and it was probably due to several senior players being unavailable Saturday (Brown, J Clarke, Lockyer, Hartley, Sinclair, Mansell, Easter, Taylor etc). I think we will sign another keeper (needed), a left back as cover for Brown (don't expect a star more a reliable cover as Greenslade continues his learning out on loan), and possibly another striker. Personally I don't think we need another CM, we have enough options in there we have Lines or Lawrence as a playmaker plus I believe Easter could player in there if necessary and Malpas at 18 looks a good prospect (although like Broom and Kilgour he is not ready and need a year or two out on loan in the conference or league 2).

Unless Lawrence somehow re-discovers is past form/fitness after a good pre-season I can't how a player not considered good enough to even make the bench at the tail end of last season is going to become our play maker this season, a useful player to use from the bench could be the best we get out of him. Same goes for Easter who really needs to be played up front/scoring goals which he brought into do.

Who said Easter was brought in just to play up front/score goals? You, or the guy who played alongside him in at HUFC/our manager?

Really annoys me when people say about Easter scoring goals.
I'm pretty sure he's never been a consistent out and out goal scorer in his career but what he has is a brilliant football brain and ability wise is the best player at the club.
He is great to have around the squad and when he does play you can see his experience of game situations and bringing others into play.

IMO Easter could play in CM or as a number 10, he is still quick, strong and has a great brain with enormous experience. I am not saying he should play there and he certainly wouldn't be my first choice but he could and I wouldn't be uncomfortable. My priority is a GK to really challenge Mildy, an experienced LB as cover for Brown and another striker who has the potential to score 15+ goals. I would be comfortable to start the season with that squad and we have a few credible U21's to fill the bench in an emergency. Getting excited now!!

Keeping DC and the best players are better than any signing we could make. I really think we could be competitive this season. Maybe add more quality in centre midfield and in goal.

Players I think will be good in L1:
Taylor Lines Montano Gosling Bodin Lockyer
Players I think will go from good to average in L1:
Brown (sorry Lee, you are my hero but you need a little more pace to tear up L1) Mansell mmc
Players who will struggle:
Leadbitter - needs to become more skillfull, better control and crossing. Pure pace and effort cannot be all for L1
Sinclair - hate to say but for all his effort, need to be a bit more cunning with the ball.
Ollie c
Gafney
James Clarke

Obviously we'll see soon enough, but I cant imagine Gosling will suddenly be a good L1 player when he looked distinctly average in the two divisions below.
Pace counts for a lot in football, I think Leads will be one of our best players.

Totally agree, pace is massive these days. Leadbitter will excel in league one IMO. I expect Gosling to struggle to get too much of look in.

I think Gosling has benefitted more than anyone by the 2 promotions where everyone was offered a new contract.
He has to show he has something worth keeping or I feel this will be his last with us. He shows glimpses of talent but doesn't have any impact. Big season for Gos if he can get on the pitch!

Gosling is a better CM/CAM than a winger but could be useful when seeing out games as an impact sub.

I think you're right you know. I wouldn't have been too disappointed to see him leave. He shows flashes but not enough for me.
