When I made my first steps on to the Tote End back in '73 there was a volume of songs that you had to learn the words to. It took a while but once learnt you had that incentive to join in, and keep it going.
it seems these days that by the time a chant has made it to the east side of the Thatchers end it has already start to peter out behind the goal. Also it is sung at such a pace its over and done with in a flash., even missing out parts of the chant in an effort to get to the end as quickly as possible. There doesn't seem to be any continuous chants anymore either that carry on and on, quick break to cheers a goal, then start up again like there use to be? such as
You are my Rovers, My only Rovers, You make me happy, when skies are grey (and blue and white), You'll never notice, how much I love you, So don't take my Rovers away. Repeat!
I don't have the answer, and in my mid 50's I don't think it's appropriate to be trying to encourage teens and 20 somethings to chant. I might get arrested.
Where are the new wordsmiths to come up with the modern classics like.
Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly, "Have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury" Shanks said, "No i don't think so but I've heard of the Tote End agro" Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na

Most of the songs we used to sing ourselves are now played as that awful pre match medley on the tannoy. I'm sure that kills it.

In ten minutes on the internet I found versions of Goodnight Irene by:
Eric Clapton Leadbelly Jim Reeves The Weavers Tom Waites Johnny Cash Pete Seeger Nat King Cole Van Morrison with Jerry Lee Lewis Little Richard Doctor John Jack White Kelly Joe Phelps Frank Sinatra The Sensational Alex Harvey Band Ronnie Lane Gene Autry Keith Richards Grateful Dead Brian Ferry The Pogues James Taylor Box Car Willie Jimmy Buffet Tom Jones
plus many more.
How about a different version before every home game?

I love the Little Richard version - featuring Jimi Hendrix no less on guitar.

Compared to others on this page I haven't been following the Gas as long, however coming up to my 10th year, without doubt the last 2/3 have been amazing and nothing short of a dream given how most of the previous 7 went.
I have spent all 9 3/4 of those years on the blackthorn terrace and IMO in terms of atmosphere it is worse than it ever has been, even worse than the Buckle years. It amazes me that the club is arguably at it's best for decades, yet the songs & numbers trying to generate an atmosphere is minute and nothing short of shameful. Tuesday wasn't as bad but on Saturday when we needed that lift trying to go for the winner it was silent all around.
I know the opinions on here ' If you want an atmosphere you gotta make one' and that is exactly what I tried, I stood at the back of the terrace behind the goal and when I started belting our Rovers to the tune of hey Jude, nothing but awkward stares and groups of young teenage lads just laughing at me.
I do think if it continues to deter then something will need to change (JUST NOT A DRUM). I'd like to think it wouldn't be hard for the younger boys to organise something on Facebook/twitter. What's the opinion on here?
I think that's a little harsh, shameful is not a word I would use to describe the issue. Kids nowadays are looking at their phone every minute so are more distracted. The big difference between us and most other clubs is the involvement of the crowd in the game from all areas of the ground, its not to be underestimated. Kids haven't got much to be angry about nowadays so maybe that's another reason.

I imagine the thatchers end sounds good when in it but from west enclosure sounds okay. I think away barely hear the noise. The stadium is so open the noise just goes into the sky. Plus we only have one song really but what a song it is! Get the singers in Uwe together and it will be immense

Then the young uns can learn and add to their repertoire . Probably best to update the second song though !

Lets be honest the lads in the thatchers rush through Irene goodnight to get to the chorus (the only bit they know) then thats interrupted by singing about how much we hate city it's all a bit flat but when the teams on the attack the noise is great

I don't think the current volume and poor quality of the tannoy helps - you can't outshout it, impossible to get an atmosphere going before kickoff. Bing bong, bing bong,* soft mole man voice* attention please, attention please will the owner of a white corsa motor vehicle *angry mole man voice* please move your automobile...ITS BLOCKING IN SOME ANGRY RESIDENTS! Love that guy. The ground could be burning down and I still wouldn't move in a rush ... UTG

I think it's quite hard to generate atmosphere at the Mem. The Blackthorn does well, but a lot of the noise is lost due to the open back. The Dribuild often join in, but with the high roof again most of the sound does not carry. The rest of the ground is pretty open so you have a job to even hear sound from some parts unless you are actually in them. That said and in spite of the above at times the atmosphere at the Mem is Fkin amazing.

What governs our noise level is the quantity and quality of away fans.
If we had a big team or even a medium size team with a few hundred, it becomes a cauldron but playing fleetwood is ridiculous.
We had less of these nothing teams back in the day. We had mainly solid league teams with solid support.
Singing is an escalation thing. You hear their fookers singing snd you immediately refort.
We are loud for big games not weekday games against nondescript, pointless teams who's league position actually disadvantages football fans. For every fleetwood theirs a Grimsby or Torquay

Personally I'd love to hear some of the tote end songs sung.
Would give us some variety and keep a bit of history alive.

At the Tote End anyone who cared to would start a song/chant confident that the majority would join in. The volume produced was usually immense. We had so much fun with the "Can Can" sung to "La lala la la la la. Batchelor Boy written by Cliff Richard and Bruce Welch was tailor made for Rovers Fans and as with a number of songs, were unique to us.
When I was young my Father said, Son I have something to say and what he told me i'll never forget until my dying day. He said, Son you are a Rovers Fan and that's the way to stay. Son, you'll be a Rovers Fan until your dying.
When things were going wrong it helped to have someone to blame and the one to fit the bill was Manager Bert Tann which gave rise to the song "Send Bert Tann to Vietnam".

The one chant that really sounds poor game after game, is the gimme an "r" , gimme an "o" etc, which is chanted with good volume, but when it gets to Rovers at the end - it dies on the first Rovers as if everyone's got bored. The "Rovers" chants should be the loudest and chanted at least 3 or 4 times (FULL VOLUME) !!
