The main problem with lack of atmosphere is the insistance on droaning out Good Night Irene repeatedly during the game.
Whilst it is great to have our own unique song, it is uninspiring and just not lively enough....as evidenced by the marked difference in vocal support vs Grimsby in the Play Off final.
Tuesday it was frankly like a morgue throughout most of the game, and whoever mentioned the Mem as an intimidating atmosphere must be having a laugh!!!
I see so many clips now of fans with great catchy songs, easy to keep going, that create a great atmosphere, examples being the Going on the P*ss with Georgie Best song from Man utd, and one I heard from Man City "Oh what a night, watching City on a Wednesday night, you play Thursday 'cuz you're f**cking sh**e!" (to tune of Oh What a Night) is great and there are many others. I think Rovers need to move with the times in this respect if we are to get a good noise back at the Mem!!

Bring back the TOTE END we knew how to make a noise in those days and get rid of the CCTV. That would really liven it up. (Oh, those were the days my friend) Thats a cue for a song if ever I heard one.

Drums are so stupid. What other musical instruments should be at games, can I jam in with a bit of acoustic guitar?
It always struck me in those olden-days, where men entered the battlefield, some armed with guns with the odd random folks armed with bagpipes or a trumpet.
Were these men disliked by the squad?...Jones - rifle, Smith - hand grenades, Richards and Oakley, get on the Lewis gun....and Davies, um, you can have these bagpipes.... Most people in their right mind want to murder people playing the bagpipes. In fact, if I was in the battlefield, the absolute last thing I would want to be doing is emiting a loud, attention-grabbing din, screeching my position to the enemy. If I had to choose an item to accompany me to a battlefield, a musical instrument is a long way down the list, along with flashing neon signs, air horns and fairy lights.
If it was voluntary, why didn't the commanding officer question the soldiers choice in weapon - it's unlikely the battle plans included a main assault with crack bag piping and trumpet squads hitting the flanks...."Give them that C arpeggio mate, give it all you got...."

For a fact I know that Peter Hartley's performance level rises 20% when he hears a well-modulated triangle.

When I made my first steps on to the Tote End back in '73 there was a volume of songs that you had to learn the words to. It took a while but once learnt you had that incentive to join in, and keep it going. it seems these days that by the time a chant has made it to the east side of the Thatchers end it has already start to peter out behind the goal. Also it is sung at such a pace its over and done with in a flash., even missing out parts of the chant in an effort to get to the end as quickly as possible. There doesn't seem to be any continuous chants anymore either that carry on and on, quick break to cheers a goal, then start up again like there use to be? such as You are my Rovers, My only Rovers, You make me happy, when skies are grey (and blue and white), You'll never notice, how much I love you, So don't take my Rovers away. Repeat! I don't have the answer, and in my mid 50's I don't think it's appropriate to be trying to encourage teens and 20 somethings to chant. I might get arrested. Where are the new wordsmiths to come up with the modern classics like. Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly, "Have you heard of the North Bank, Highbury" Shanks said, "No i don't think so but I've heard of the Tote End agro" Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na Where me n wend were stood there were quite a few yung uns, they sang through quite a bit of the game, and got very loud with encouragement when we went 1 down, they also sang a few old song, even tried the hokey coky but no one else joined in, they even started the red red robbin, it seemed to me that a lot would only sing if their group started the chants. Dont worry about trying to encourage em, just say to em cmon lads if gramps can do it so can you

Our atmosphere is poor these days, but having said that, most other teams are poor also. I think in the previous couple of years only a couple have been decent, like Leeds, Southampton and the like. Most other clubs 'our size' has been just as poor

Tuesday was my first time in the Blackthorn/Thatcher's end, I normally go to the South Stand or Family Terrace, but have always admired the atmosphere that comes from the Blackthorn, so thought I'd give it a go. Although when in full flow the singing was great, at times it was quiet, which sadly is why I will be going back to the South Stand mainly because when it was quite you could hear the foul mouthed bloke stood behind me who found it necessary to abuse..well just about anyone on the pitch. I am not a prude but found most of it totally unnecessary. Having said that there is no better sound than the Blackthorn in full flow.

Some of the reasons I can come up with for this are: (echoed by others on here I believe)
- Most of the 'characters' who used to get the noise going have been banned - The open away terrace means you can barely hear the away fans, even if it's a large following (so there's no vocal 'battle' between the fans) - Our repertoire of chants is outdated and dull
