I would like to start by saying I am very happy with where we currently stand in 9th position in League 1
However for discussion and not criticism I have looked at some stats
With 27 games gone and in 9th place stats regarding the top 10 teams rovers have played so far are
Played 11 lost 7 drawn 3 won 1 The game won was a 2-1 score, games lost include 2 conceding 4 goals, 2 conceding 3 goals
Goals score 46 i.e. 3rd highest in division only bettered by the top 2 teams
Goals conceded 47 i.e. 2nd highest in the division only beaten by a team with 53
Rovers the only team in the top 10 with a negative goal difference. Seems to suggest that 8th to 10th place is where we will finish at the end of the season unless serious signings are in the way.
As Clarke has publicly stated it's not rocket science to see where the problem is, or is it. For nearly 3 seasons his style of football has been to go forward and score more goals than those conceded, which has worked extremely well thus far with roughly the same players. The question is, is it the strikers that are very good and the defenders not pulling their weight or simply the tactics of going hell bent to score an issue? Clarke has singled out the strikers and midfielder to defend more but then if they do we don't score. Evolution not Revolution is the buzz word and is OK by me but if the current strikers are that good will they still be here come the time the defence is improved. Football is all about players coming and going. I don't like the word "dump players", as if Rovers want to improve then signing from teams in the higher division will most likely cost money to buy their "dumped players". One team's dumped player is another star player, I wonder who is about tpo be dumped on us in the transfer window. It's my thinking Clarke will wait til the summer and get his FIRST choice then UTG

The answer surely is no or we'd have spent it on the 1 January, all we can do is wait and see who DC brings in, at the end of the day if we finish mid table it's a damn sight better than 91st! Just a bit annoying we can't get a bit more quality in the side and then really push for a Play Off spot I just don't think Wael is going to spend any big money to the UWE is sorted out, if it ever does get sorted.

Just because we're not flashing the cash does not mean there is none. We just broke Eastleighs transfer record and had a former Serie A goalkeeper on trial so there is at least a budget. To say anything other is scaremongering. DC is frugal and looking to firstly use his budget well, and secondly bring in the right kind of player. Much better to bring in a Stuart Sinclair type than a Jon Joe O'Toole. Also, the best players aren't necessarily going to be those sold on the first day of the window because that would mean they're replaceable in their existing team and not worth bargaining over. Better than being a Lee Johnson / Steve Lansdown combination type. 'Cause the only people seeing that as going well is us!

The "We're gonna score more goals than you" mindset works ok in the lower divisions but the higher up the leagues you go you have to build on a solid defence. If you don't concede a goal all season you will get a minimum of 38 pts on the Premiership and 46 points in the other leagues. I like Rovers to attack but not at the expense of being caught out with the defence unprotected. Two teams that spring to mind are Peterboro and Liverpool. Peterboro have flitted between Championship and League one for the past few seasons. They batter teams into submission in League One by going all out attack leading to high scoring games that they generally edge in their favour. But then they struggle with the same style of play in the Championship because the better teams defend better against that style of play and then break quickly and punish an unprotected defence. As for Liverpool, with Suarez etc they scored over 100 goals in the Premiership a couple of seasons ago. Normally that would give a team the title but they were ultimately undone by Chelsea near the end of the season who showed that a really solid defence counts for a great deal. One game being unable to unlock a miserly defence and the title was gone.
So, I think DC needs to get the defence tightened up and take it from there. We have plenty of goals in us but it won't count for much if we have to score 2+ goals every game to get a win cos the pressure will all be on the strikers and a collective off day could well mean a defeat.
Anyway, that's my view.

You say beating Eastleigh's transfer record as if we've just spent £10m on a player, basically we've once again spent Bliss/Gaffney type money on a player. I don't get this DC is frugal with his money as he doesn't have to worry if Wael can't afford the budget that's for Wael to worry about. We clearly need an experienced league goalie and central defender, the latter is likely to cost decent money but I'm not convinced DC has the funds to bring one in, that'snot scaremongering just my opinion.

If we are still in with a chance of the playoffs on last home game of the season it would be a fantastic achievement.

Agreed that 100k isn't much but January still has 16 days to go. We're putting bids in to championship level clubs. In previous years you'd be lucky to spend 100k in the whole of January whereas much less young and froing went on with that transfer than Gaffneys last year. I disagree that being frugal means we have no cash. It means that cash is an object at Bristol Rovers which is the same for most football clubs. Only a handful of clubs outside the top leagues throughout Europe can chuck 100k away willy nilly - and if they do they either eventually come a cropper or will waste money down the toilet chute. City are of course an example - just imagine if Darrell could spend money without worry like that? Or a different example just as close to home in some ways is Peterborough spending 1m on Luke James - now out on loan season long with us with a view to a permanent transfer which probably won't happen. It's poor management. A good manager will make good choices on every penny available even if it is excessive. Those with lower budgets are less likely to luck out and get away with it.

In reality the al qadi's have probably spent nothing yet. We probably earned 300k from the chelsea game, average attendances are up by around 1k as well, we also have around 500k extra from the TV deal for being a league one club. DC recently said we have a bottom 8 budget but we have the 7th biggest average attendance in the division. Only Bradford, Sheff utd and Bolton have revenues significantly ahead of ours. We still don't know what happened to the debt, the MSP capital loan has almost certainly been shifted and is still probably secured against the mem, and there are various conflicting views about whether higgs and co have actually been paid off yet. Hopefully the agm will soon clear a lot of these issues up. And i haven't even mentioned uwe! Seems like we are still being kept in the dark.

I think it is the other way round? In reality doesn't the money from season tickets in the summer go on paying off the loses from the previous season? We always rob Peter to pay Paul!
