Given that the transfer window was open for a month, it’s amazing how much business was conducted on the final day and concluded only hours or minutes before the 11.00pm deadline.
As far as Rovers were concerned, of course, the big news centred on the departure of striker Matty Taylor to our arch rivals Bristol City and the repercussions of that move will almost certainly reverberate around the club in the weeks and months ahead.
However, there are many reasons to remain positive about our season in spite of how supporters might feel about a deal that was concluded which Rovers were powerless to prevent.
In the last three years we have been relegated out of the league and then won back to back promotions and currently sit in eighth place just three points off of a play-off place.
Also, it’s not as though Taylor was the club’s only striker and so his departure gives any one of Billy Bodin, Rory Gaffney, Ellis Harrison, Luke James, or Jamie Lucas the opportunity to step up to the plate
In spite of what our supporters think, a number of efforts were made to bring players in before the window closed, but it should be remembered that manager Darrell Clarke did bring in four players in January and didn’t leave everything until the last minute.
The first of the quartet to arrive was defender Joe Partington, from Eastleigh, in a permanent move for an undisclosed fee and his arrival was quickly followed by goalkeeper Joe Lumley, on loan from Queens Park Rangers.
Stoke City defender Ryan Sweeney then arrived on loan, and he was followed by Middlesbrough defender Jonny Burn arriving in a permanent deal.
Although the window has now closed, clubs are still able to sign players who are free agents.
One piece of news that escaped attention was the departure of midfielder Liam Lawrence.
The former Republic of Ireland international, who scored once in 16 league games for the club, has had his contract cancelled by mutual agreement and is now a free agent.
We wish him well for the future.

With or without Taylor we're in the best position we've been in for years, in every regard. There's some right drama queens on here sometimes.

True but we did get him in the summer when its more common for decent players to be found unattached

Wasn't Billy Bob a free agent when we signed him? Just sayin. I've said this before but being a free agent in the summer, is not the same as being one when the final transfer window closes in January. Now we're looking at the Rory Fallon's rather than the Bodin's.

well written article but I don't agree with the players listed being the one leading the attack in afraid.
Harrison is the best of the bunch but he is hit and miss.
We need a replacement in the summer now for Taylor. Can only hope show some ambition and don't wait to pick up deadline deals or players clubs no longer want. Can we not identify targets early and bring them to the club. is it that hard to plan ahead.
Bodin as far as I am concerned doesn't need to step to the plate to fill the boots of Judas. He is a winger and should stay where he is doing what he does best - run with the ball, cut in and score screamers.
The rest of players named can try and fill void of Judas until the end of the season.
I am hoping now for league survival and ambition shown from owners. Other clubs with far less support and facilties identify targets and I expect us to do the same.
