Statistically, it currently sits with a certain Mr.Clarke. www.managerstats.co.uk/clubs/bristol-rovers/Not sure how how accurate this is. Was trying to see how he compares in a league table of managers. Even so, he is ahead by a good 5% in these stats so sure he's still up there.

Bert Tann's record in the 1950's will take some beating but I think he was in change a little too long, Gerry Francis in his first stint worked wonders only to disappoint in his second stint and DC in my view is up there with these two. I'd love him to become the Shankley of the Gas. Must say that personally I loved the football played in the couple of years when Bill Dodgin was manager...he really was a one-off with his concept of 11 attackers and 11 defenders when asked what system he preferred.
So DC is without doubt in my top three and I hope he can become a legend with us in the next 2 or 3 years by taking us into the Championship. At the moment he's first equal with Bert Tann and Gerry Francis.

For me - DC. Without doubt.
Not only is his win % higher than all our previous managers, but he almost single-handedly grabbed this club by the scruff of the neck and dragged it up off the floor when it was at rock bottom.
To do that - and then win back-to-back promotions for the first time in our history - makes him clear no.1 in my book.
I would argue that no previous Rovers manager has ever been under more pressure to deliver than DC was in the Conference season. And he pulled it out the bag and then built on it brilliantly.

Bill dodgin was the manager of my childhood when i went with my dad,so much attacking play with wingers ray graydon and harold jarman. later i played in a team managed by ex rovers defender dave stone and listened in wonder to his tales of dodgin who he admired like me.

Agree with all that have been mentioned but Bobby Campbell did well taking over a struggling side and keeping them in the old 2nd division,a higher level than DC ( so far ) or Bill Dodgin.

Has to be a close call between Gerry Francis and DC for me.

So far in my time of supporting the Gas I've seen us with 25 different managers in 35 years, and for me DC is number 1 because of what he has done in terms of bringing us back up to our natural level with the promise of so much more to come, all the while under such massive pressure in that first season because if we would've got stuck in the conference who knows where we would be now.
Previously I would've said Gerry Francis by a long way as the Twerton era in my late teens was just amazing, but DC has surpassed him and I honestly think he will be here for a fair few years yet and take us up again and leave a proper legacy before moving on to bigger and better things.

Gerry Francis did incredibly well especially with us having to play at Twerton. Think of all the disastrous managers we have had like Magoo & that agrogant prick Buckle! So it's DC for me for dragging us back from the brink of oblivion and bringing us our Rovers back and let's hope his calm and collective leadership continues for many years to come. We were a laughingstock, not anymore!

DC had the advantage of being able to pick us up whilst we were still in Bristol with a decent fan base, GF's work whilst stuck at Bath playing in front of 2,000(?) gates sometimes still remains remarkable, plus he took us to what is now the Championship. Plus he brought in nearly £2m in transfer fees on.
I still feel GF1 is edging it slightly but both have been great managers in the modern times.

Surprised to see Ward's first stint better than Francis'. Is this because Ward oversaw a playoff push campaign, whereas despite Francis getting us promoted as Champions, his win percentage would have been reduced after our time in 2nd Division (Championship)? Sadly I was only 3 when Francis did his magic with us, so I don't really remember it, but I have seen the DVD and can obviously appreciate what an incredible feat that was, especially with us exiled to Twerton at the time. Proper Gas spirit that, which is what DC has brought back to us after we thought it was pretty much gone. The great thing about DC for me is that I genuinely feel confident about each match we play, knowing we'll at least give ourselves a fighting chance with spirit and determination, and often great football. DC is a master tactician and a great motivator of the players. Seems like a really top bloke to boot. So all in all, my vote is for DC! Edit: Looking at the list of managers immediately before DC makes me shudder. Thank you Darrell Clarke, you legend!

Surprised to see Ward's first stint better than Francis'. Ward is in my top 3 with Gerry and DC. Maybe joint 3rd with Trolls.

It's not just about wins but also about the resources available and the level results were achieved at. Gerry Francis had very few resources to get us promoted from the level where we are currently below the play off places. Bert Tann, whose time came to an end in my first years of watching Rovers, not only got us promoted to what is now the Championship, he then came very close to getting us promoted to the top level. All things considered, for me: Tann, Clarke, Francis, Megson.

In my time my top three are :- 1) Bert Tann 2) Don Megson 3) DC This is probably where I'd say we are. But DC is within spitting distance. To become number 1, I'd say championship and remain for at least an extra season. Resources have to be taken into account, and hopefully by the time we are into our second season in the championship all required resources will be in place.
