I was in my local pub in shirehampton a bit drunk with a terrible band playing,i was with some friends a rovers season ticket holder and a city season ticket holder. At the end of the night i loudly requested "irene goodnight" to the band. im 58 but my job is physical and im 6ft but when i made my fun request a city fan who i have never met threatened me and stalked me back to my friends verbally abusing me,i wasnt intimidated but i despaired at the hate coming out of this guy, which got worse when i suggested it was possible we could be playing them next season! I turned the other cheek and my city friend explained it was just fun banter and he left. Point is why has it come to this vile situation where in many cases banter has become hatred? i know there have been hardcore hooligans for years but lately ive noticed ordinary people sucked into the hate and happy to be aggressive to opposing fans just for being opposing fans! Are they worse than us? we were always the good guys i thought but im not so sure now to be honest. If a grand child of mine wanted to wear a rovers or city shirt to say the zoo i would be worried, how cra* is that?

Shirehampton says it all. You should have ripped his head off and shat down his neck, but on second thoughts you probably did the best thing. Well done, ignore the 6 fingered inbreds. Edit: Apologies to anyone who lives in Shirehampton thoughtless comment.

Absolute clickbait.
They hate us more since back to back promotions after they thought we were gone, clearly.

Sadly some take it all a bit too seriously. A quick look on the Rovers appreciation page will sadly show you that. Especially after a certain someone left, I wasn't happy with the guy but some of the stuff being said and threatened was over the line. Goading on attacking the guys house for instance.
9 supporters out of 10, red or blue you can have a decent chat with and a bit of banter over it. I remember walking past a city fan at the start of the season when I was heading up to the Mem and him making a quick quip to his son "So city are fourth in the league are they?" They laughed, I laughed and now I'm laughing about it even more! But then there are the others who will turn it into an excuse for violence.
Sadly it's the way of football.

We have chatted about this and you only have to look at the threats, abuse etc at the snakey one and you have your answer. We used to be different but it's a fag paper between now. All this "banter" stuff? Well I reckon it is just a way to be vile but rationalise it. A bit like calling you a lady garden but adding a kiss and it's ok. God I feel old but in my forties, I remember times when we did have the moral high ground. Sadly not now

Should've flattened the inbred knobber!
Not related but I once saw two guys fighting in town, one was a Man United fan, the other Arsenal. Turns out both of them have never seen their teams play!

Not quite sure which universe I'm in. Rovers and the 82ers have hated each other since the sixties.

I shouted "shithead" at someone wearing a C*ty shirt the other day. We were both coming out of the Central Coast Mariners game. He was looking all over the place to see who shouted. I tried not to laugh and carried on talking to my son as if nothing had happened. What the f**k did he expect wearing a shirt like that to a game in Australia.
* Didn't offer physical violence towards him though.

I think its different now for the worse, when i was growing up lots supported one team but watched the other play, not now although football is more expensive i think its nastier now between red and blue.

If you were a Rovers fan in the late 60s and early 70s, i.e. before Gasheads existed, and had lived in 'artcliffe you would most definitely hate those that float. The trouble in that period far exceeded anything that goes on today. Having said that: I am not condoning violence in any way, just stating facts. The good thing is that if someone walks around 'artcliffe in a Rovers shirt nowadays, they are not likely to be approached by any six fingered window lickers because they take the attitude that anyone brave enough to do that is either well hard or a raving nutter and nobody likes tangling with a nutter.

They could see how toxic the situation had become and that there was a very real danger that something serious could occur. As employers they have a duty of care towards their employees and there was a foreseeable risk that could have found them culpable as much as anyone who stepped over the line. Sad times.

I think it's tame compared to the old days, there was real hatred from both sides back then. Not surprised about the city clown though, fair play for not putting on him.

I reckon that a City fan requesting a Wurzels number in a pub in Kingswood or Cadbury Heath in the 80's/ 90's may have received the same reaction! Irene Goodnight in Shirehampton was never going to go down well! Naive at best thinking that no one would react
