Steve, in theory Blis gives you something a little different but in reality Ellis is quicker, stronger and better in the air so I think we can only assume that having working up close every day with Bliss for the last 18 mths DC doesnt fancy him for this league and wants him out or at least out on loan to free up the wage bill. Re the bench abdolutely right to put Malpas on there as with Mansell injured he's currently our only central midfield cover, Gosling can play in there but he's really a wide man, Greenslade was sat behind me yesterday I am surprised he wasnt on bench as defensive cover rather than one of the wingers or Bodin, the bench seemed a little unbalanced. On the plus side a very attacking bench!

A fair and balanced report Steve, players (Lockyear and Sinclair) played in their correct positions, I am and never have been Ollie Clarke best fan but credit where credit due he was much better and personally I thought it was great to see 3 academy graduates on the bench. Also refreshing to see DC give Broom a go, persnally I would prefer that than sticking a loanee winger on.

I agree Steve, fundamentally we can play a variety of formations, 4-4-2, 3-5-1 etc but players need to be played to their strengths i.e if you start Lockyear, who I rate, he has to play in defence, if you start Sinclair play to his strengths by playing him centrally and if your playing with a strike force of Taylor, Easter, Harrison, Bodin etc keep possession, play to feet and in the channels, simples ........

We can't knock the way he took his goal but other than that he didnt create much on a day when we werent at our best. Would have liked to see Sinclair all over him as I imagine he would have become very frustrated!

Opinions, opinions, opinions thats the beauty of this game. What is a holding midfielder versus an attacking midfielder, we will all have diferent views, my view:
Lockyear can only do an old fashioned holding CM role i.e sit just in front of back four, get a tackle in and give the ball to someone more creative. Lines plays deep, not a 'holding' CM role as above but what is now considered a number 4/6, he drops deep gets the ball off the back four then become the playmaker, occasionally bursting forward when possible in which instance some else holds.
Problem is Lines is a little off the pace at the moment, (not just yesterday) and if you play him with Lockyear or Clarke who both play fairly deep, it gets crowded and nobody is pressing higher hence giving to opposition too much time. Pressing 'higher' is what Sinclair and Mansell do well so my view is to get the best from Lines you need a Mansell/Sinclair or both in alongside and a Lines/Lockyear/Clarke will not work.

I liked Kaid when he first arrived but then he seemed to go off the boil, just it depends what DC see's in training, a short term deal to keep him hungry may suit everyone.

I totally agree Lines and Sinclair. Sinclair play high and press, Lines drop have the ball and dictate the play! When Mans is fot he and Sinclair will battle for that role with Lines playing th 6/4 role! Unless DC want to play 3 in there which makes us narrow!

GGMI, sorry my comments re Lucas was misleading, I agree he will get some benefit from his month's loan and providing he keeps doing well I hope he will get a chance, my concern (small) with Darrell is that he appears a little adverse to giving the young ones a go. Just a feeling but I would like to see him throw one or two of them in.

It is clear that when playing 4-4-2 DC wants a terrior style central midfielder to play high and then for Lines to drop off, have the ball off the defence and dictate the play. If the ball into Lines isn't on then they look for the long diagonal and then to pick up the second phase! Simple logic but my concerns are; 1) I have been watching Lines attitude during pre-season, he hasn't done well in any game (I watched them all), I hoped he may come to life yesterday when it mattered, alas not! 2) Tom Lockyear, great attitude and a quality individual but he can NOT play in central midfield, he battles hard but does not possess the 360 degree vision required to play there or have the quality of distribution. 3) Ollie Clarke, as per Tom above, I like Ollie's attitude but I honestly feel National League is his level. 4) Stuart Sinclair, we all love and apprieciate his attitude, work rate and endeavour, if I am ruthlessly honest I think he may lack the quality to play football league and experience players will simply play around him, however more than anyone Sinclair deserves the opportunity to prove me wrong BUT if you play him you can ONLY play him in a central role, his attributes are totally lost out wide 5) Mansell, is a critical player for us, yes he is coming to the end of his career but he has another season in him, possibly 2, he does the high press well, he has buckets of energy, more quality than Sinclair plus has a great influence on the rest of the team, constantly talking, helping and organising. 6) Malpas, a young pro, watched him at Sutton, Arsenal, Reading and looked a real talent, constantly wanted the ball and I only saw him lose possession once. Some will say he is too young and inexperienced after all "you never win anything with kids". Not sure Slavin Billac would agree given the start he gave Reece Oxford, fortune favours the brave.
In summary, we need Mansell back ASAP, until then Sinclair must play centrally and Lines needs to get back to his performances of last year. Outside this and in the absence of any other quality signings DC needs to get square pegs in square holes, dont struggle with the likes of Lockyear out of position when you have quality youth available, get Malpas on the bench and bleed him slowly., can he really do worse than Tom yesterday.
PS: Lucas scored again on his Conf Prem debut and got MOTM, how much more can the lad do meanwhile our 'experienced' strikers can't hit the net!
