Kilgour / Ehmer / Davies would appear to be our strongest back three but obviously Davies is injured so the other position is up for grabs. I haven't seen enough to say, but it's good to have competition to keep people on their toes and to take the place of anyone who is out of form. Harries has looked very poor in what I have seen, I think his distribution has been woeful and would cost us goals.

I've also got a question about the 1973/74 away shirt that was famously worn in the 8-2 demolition of Brighton. Can anyone tell me if it was yellow or amber? The photos and videos that I've seen suggest to me that it might have been more amber? But maybe that's just the impact of the old cameras, or of my eyes! We borrowed Brighton’s away kit. Ok! Nice to know we've done the same to others as has been done to us! So the away kit was the red and white stripes and that was considered a clash, or was their a mix up getting the kit their? Thanks for the reply.

One more question, this time the 1978/79 away shirt. There are photos like this one, which I believe is April 79, showing a blue trimmed yellow Bukta shirt: But, to me at least, it looks like the shirts worn in this game away to Sunderland in Dec 1978 had black trim, maybe it's my eyes again! Can anyone recall? Although I guess if you were at Roker Park to see us lose 5 nil you'd have tried to remove that from your memory in the last 40 years! Attachment Deleted

The website Football Shirts History has just added illustrations of our old home and away shirts from the 1970s - they really are a great look back at some iconic strips. Take a look at: footballshirthistory.weebly.com/a-b/bristol-rovers#And if you know of any further additions or tweaks to the record then please let them know. UTG! And thank you Football Shirt History. I think that site may have got it slightly wrong with the 80-81 green and black away shirt. The image on there shows the shirt having the 'cartoon' pirate badge but I had a replica as a kid and I distinctly remember it having the BRFC script (like the 79-80 shirts - and my avatar!). Unless we also used it as a third-kit that year too? With the badged version, interesting to see we were ahead of the curve in recolouring this to match the shirt colours, i thought this was only a recent thing. The shirt I'd forgotten about was the all dark blue 3rd shirt of 80-81, pretty sure that was the one we wore when I saw us play Southampton away, Kevin keegan and all, in the FA cup (3-1 defeat if memory serves). Don't know if we wore it anywhere else. Re recolouring the badge to match the away colours that's a good spot. I only realised the other day that the same also happened with he 92/93 shirt when the badge was black, although the matchworn shirts were actually embroidered in original colours.

Thanks for your insights buktaboy, I've been liaising with the guy who does the Football Shirt History site and we weren't sure whether the circular pirate badge was used in 80/81 or only in 81/82. Like you say there is definitely a green and black quarters with the BFRC logo. Here's a picture of the all blue third shirt from Feb 81 away to Newcastle. Attachment DeletedI don't suppose you, or anyone else has a memory of the shirt down as 81/82 third, I know someone who has the shirt but we haven't been able to link it to a game yet let alone find a photo from the time. Thanks again for your help - UTG.

I heard on Wednesday that we also have a friendly lined up away to Newport, probably not at Rodney Parade though. I didn't say anything as I figured the club are going to want to keep things under wraps. But, given that the Evening Post have published details of the Bristol Manor Farm game then this stuff evidently can't be that top secret! It looks like the limited info. I got a couple of weeks ago from a friend who follows Newport was correct. Very surprising that no more info. got out during all that time. I too don't understand the secrecy, although the FAW site would be pretty easily accessed as it shares a car park with the leisure centre, but I really don't see people trying to attend.

I would love to get my hands on a Toshiba kit. Some absolute beauties amongst those and some terrible shirts too. Is that the Hobot shirt with the original crest on it, if so I loved that shirt and would love the chance to buy it as a modern day replica. If I recall the away was all yellow with striped shades. Looked amazing I have this one and it is a beauty, one of the best shirts in my collection. I'd love to find the yellow away one, does anyone have one? I don't believe there are any retro remakes of these unfortunately. Attachment Deleted

92/93 home and away are my favourites, but 79/80 and 89/90 home, and 94/95 away, are right up there, pleased to have all of those in my collection, the 79/80 being the toffs remake. We really have had some great shirts over the decades.

Drinking when young really affects! I attended most away games 80-84 but, seriously I cannot remember the orange Toshiba shirts. Drinking tinnies on the train and being in the pub from midday obviously affected my vision and or my memory. Though in those days, we seemed to play in blue and white quarters away more frequently than these days unless there was a clash of colours.

A bit disappointing and disorganised. Looked like a member of backroom staff was going to referee it. Wonder if it'll be part of the match report on the official site? We wanted to play for longer and agreed with Exeter, but the refs said no at the last minute. So I expect we decided to ref it ourselves 😂. It was the officials that didn't want to play for longer. Sure, I appreciate that, but very odd that it wasnt properly organised with the officials beforehand.

I was a bit disappointed with the performance if I’m being honest, especially with the first team that was fielded. Garner is obviously trying to get us to play a more fluid, passing based style of football but Exeter looked better in possession and more confident as a team. We were second best in the first half if truth be told. I think Hargreaves is better suited to a deeper position than the number 10 role, I would of liked to have seen him and Westbrooke switch positions because Westbrooke looks like dangerous with the ball at feet. JCH looked unfit and frustrated that he didn’t get any service from the midfielders. He still looks dangerous when he does get the ball in the final third but I hope he uses the rest of pre season to work on his fitness and match sharpness. There were some positives to take away. JML looked really lively and posed a threat every time he got on the ball, looking forward to seeing what he can do this season. Max Ehmer showed glimpses of why Gillingham fans rate him so highly and put in a commanding performance. Some of the youngsters in the second half, the likes of Warwick and Walker looked promising. I even thought Mark Little had a really good game, he’s been a bit written off but I think if he keeps that level of performance up he’ll feature for us next season. Agree with most of this, but not Little, he was very poor again and played a stupid ball back to the keeper which Exeter were unfortunate not to score from. Harries was also very poor.

Looks like they are playing on? Stream has cut out but before it did you could clearly see the two teams lining up to play another 45. A bit disappointing and disorganised. Looked like a member of backroom staff was going to referee it. Wonder if it'll be part of the match report on the official site?

So, if I'm piecing this all together correctly we were wearing the red/white striped away kit in 66/67 (eg Oxford City, Shrewsbury), 70/71 (eg Reading), 73/74 (eg Blackburn). That's verging on aound ten seasons, there must be more photos out there! In the late seventies, as early as 77/78 (possibly earlier?) we had a couple of different yellow Bukta shirts, and then the famous green and black quarters shirts came in, and then the Football Shirt History website picks up the story from there: footballshirthistory.weebly.com/a-b/bristol-rovers#Are there any other Rovers away/special shirts people remember from pre-1980 or is that our lot? (Of course there must have been something prior to the red/white stripes unless that goes back to 1883!) Would love to hear any more info people may have. Thanks in advance, UTG. [Edit. 1973/74 Brighton 2-8 Bristol Rovers - we were wearing yellow shirts with black shorts and socks - how does that square with peoples' memories?]

Red and white kit..... WYHIB ? I actually quite like red and white stripes with black shorts, but, for Rovers, no thanks. Wouldn't mind seeing us go back to one of our early home kits, sky and white hoops or black and white stripes, we'd need a third kit then. www.historicalkits.co.uk/Bristol_Rovers/Bristol_Rovers.htmDoes anyone have a record of change kits that predates 1980? This is the best record of away kits I've found footballshirthistory.weebly.com/a-b/bristol-rovers#I have very little idea of what Rovers wore as a change strip prior to this. Of course back in the day the change kit was only worn when necessary. Maybe I can jog some memories on change shirts with these photos. What seasons were they used, and did we always wear yellow in the 70s (I appreciate one picture has a date, but I don't know if we might have used it for more than one season?). The club charges 20 quid for all lightweight packages sent to overseas destinations, even Europe where the postage is usually about 3 quid! It really puts me off buying anything from the club shop. I wrote to Tom Gorringe about it and received a very prompt reply saying that it's something that they are going to look into soon. UTG The £14 difference between £6 and £20 p&p means there's enough markup there for me to buy some things from the club shop and then sell them on to you 😉 UTG!
