As DC is promising activity in the January transfer window, I feel like this thread might be relevant again. Anyone got any suggestions? If we're looking to strengthen in central midfield we could do a lot worse than getting Middlesbrough's 22-year-old Lewis Wing on loan if available. He joined them in the summer from Northern League side Shildon after scoring 37 goals for them during 16/17. So far this season he has scored 5 goals and created 4 assists from 9 appearances for the Boro U23's in Premier League 2 and he also got an assist in the EFL Trophy game against Blackpool.

Pirate - young players with no or virtually no league experience in a struggling team which will probably be facing a relegation battle come January !! Are you thinking straight ??

I'd prefer experience, but as bluebutterfly pointed out above, DC has already intimated that established experienced players are expensive. If the younger players have the quality and the right attitude then I don't think it'll be a problem. They will have a point to prove and want to showcase their abilities - if they don't perform for us then they are unlikely to get a chance with their parent clubs.

Could any of Chris Eagles, Nigel Reo-Coker, Jerome Thomas, Miles Addison or Kelvin Wilson help us until January and beyond? All are currently free agents.
Port Vale want to re-sign Chris Eagles and he has recently been taken on trial by Ross County. The 32-year-old has the experience of over 390 games mostly at a higher level, with 60 goals and 57 assists. Can play on either wing - surely got to be a better option than someone like Byron Moore?
Nigel Reo-Coker is without a club after leaving Norwegian club Ik Start. A natural leader, the 33-year-old defensive midfielder has over 475 appearances at a higher level. If interested and affordable could provide the leadership and defensive qualities in the middle of the pitch that we've been lacking.
Jerome Thomas can play on the left wing and has over 280 appearances mostly at a higher level. Although he didnt exactly pull up any trees at Port Vale, could be worth a trial to see what he can still offer?
Miles Addison is a free agent having made 15 appearances last season for SPL side Kilmarnock. The 28-year-old can play as a centre back or defensive midfielder and helped Bournemouth win promotion from this division in the past.
The former Celtic and Nottingham Forest centre back Kelvin Wilson has decent experience and is without a club. He helped Forest win promotion from this division and helped Celtic win 2 league titles and a Scottish Cup. Could he potentially strengthen our leaky defence?
The free agent players are limited at this stage of the season, but those are a few that could potentially improve what we have and add a bit of experience.

Reo-Coker is the one that particularly stands out for me. He has captained at the highest level and has the combative defensive qualities that we are crying out for in the middle. If we could get Chris Eagles performing he could be an interesting signing. He showed glimpses of his quality in a struggling Port Vale side last season, scoring 4 goals in 16 starts. He has good pedigree having played over 70 times in the top flight and over 220 times in the Championship. If we can get him performing anywhere near what he's capable of I believe he has the skill and quality to make an impact for us.

I didn't think it was worth its own thread so thought I'd post it here. "Karl Robinson has provided an update on the potential signing of trialist Leon Best." "31-year-old Best has been training with the South Londoners for over a month. The striker has been without a club since his release by Ipswich Town in the summer, and scored for Robinson’s men in a behind-closed-doors friendly with QPR during the international break." “We’ve just got one or two things that we’ve just got to get sorted,” explained the Addicks boss. www.londonnewsonline.co.uk/karl-robinson-provides-update-on-potential-signing-of-charlton-trialist-leon-best/

They've got Josh Magennis, but their other strikers have struggled. I can see him playing quite a bit.

Dembele at Grimsby looks a tidy winger, hope we have our irons in the fire for early business, because relegation would affect our season ticket sales, as the exciting future with wealthy owners, has been lowered to doing up the dump, that many have said was not a financially viable option.

Christian Doidge is on 12 goals for this season, local and has unfinished business at Rovers. Hopefully someone we are looking at.

Not sure what Doidge’s contract situation is, but think it’d take a decent fee to take him from FGR if we had to pay for him. Maybe would be doable with Bodin money, but tbh I don’t see us affording him otherwise.

Hamer did say that if we lose Bodin in January or the summer (Which is likely), DC will have money to get a replacement. I reckon Doidge would be one of the first players we would turn to. DC wanted him back in the conference season.

Interesting thread and all the research you’ve done on here. Shows I think that there are lots of players who do very well in non league but they are non league for a reason I suppose, some of which are they are not good enough for league 1. The few that make the transition are worth a chance as Peterborough have done but I’m sure there are many who don’t make the jump to a higher league. I watched half an hour of the D/R and Chester match yesterday and it looked woeful, poor touch, hoof ball and little good passing that was good to watch. Watching the highlights of our match at Blackburn with some excellent play by us made me realise what a huge gap there is between where we were and where we are now. But the point I was going to make was with Chris Hargreaves doing the pundits job on BT Sport for the National League he must be building up a good knowledge of players at that level at least if not even lower down. He must know lots of players lower down. So I am presuming that whilst watching these lower leagues Chris H is scouting for us as well and reporting back to DC. UTG!

Just looked him up Siriki (Dembele) of Lambeth! Got to sign this lad surely.Grimsby fans raving over him as well, very fast and skilful and can play down the middle as well.Signed a 1 year contract in the summer but Grimsby have the option of another year as well so would cost money,no idea how much.Worth a cheeky nibble just for the name.

EFL's Young Player of the Month for October. 4 goals and 3 assists so far this season. Previously with the Nike Academy. Only 20. Worth the club keeping an eye on.

I like hargreaves, eavesdropped on a half time team talk at cribbs last year in the "reserve league",impressive,he talked well. Hes got very good connections throughout lower league football and the development squad have done very well in a short space of time with him in charge.

There is a big step up in terms of quality from the National League to League One, but there are always gems out there. I've mentioned Corey Whitely numerous times, but there are other players that have caught the eye like Oladapo Afolayan, Henry Jones, Joe Ward, Charlie Carter, Larnell Cole and Bruno Andrade in the National League. Others lower down like Lee Shaw, Andy Dales, Reise Allassani, Sam Smart and Josh March. Like you say, I'm sure Chris Hargreaves is building up a good knowledge of players in the non-league game. He seems to be doing a good job with us and has built a talented group of U23's. Hopefully a few of those will be pushing for a first-team start in the near future.
