there are always gems out there.... other players that have caught the eye like Joe Ward. Peterborough United have signed winger Joe Ward from National League side Woking for an undisclosed fee on a two-and-a-half year deal. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42635149It doesn't sound like he was picked up by their scouts? "Ward, 22, impressed for the Cards in their 1-1 FA Cup draw with Posh last month"

A player catching the eye in non-league this season is 23-year-old winger Joe Leesley at National League North side Harrogate Town. Last season he scored 9 goals and created 23 assists and this season he already has 15 goals and 18 assists from 30 appearances in all competitions. He won an England C cap back in 2016 and is worth a closer look to see if he could do a job at a higher level IMHO. Could be a late developer. We could take a look at 21-year-old former England U16/U17/U18 left back Ben O'Hanlon at Harrogate Town while we're at it. Another late developer that might be worth taking a look at is Philip Roberts, a 23-year-old striker, he's scored 16 goals this season for Braintree. It didn't really work out for him at Falkirk but he was highly rated for a time at Arsenal. He is someone who will be in professional football again soon IMO.

If we're taking a punt on a striker from non-league I'd rather 22-year-old Lee Shaw at Grantham. 27 goals in 32 games.

23-year-old 6ft 4in former Italy U18 international centre back Giovanni Zaro could be worth scouting and a closer look for Italian 4th tier side Pro Patria. The former Inter Milan youngster has helped his side keep 8 clean sheets and only concede 10 goals from 16 games this season.

I must admit foreign recruitment interests me and is something we should look to do more of. It's always a gamble but clubs like Brentford and Leeds have made it work. Some of your suggestions are more than attainable and worth the club enquiring about. I believe this was why Brian Dutton was recruited in the summer. I wonder if his trip to Real Oviedo produced any results?
DC had this to say in the summer on recruitment from abroad:
Asked if bringing in players from abroad was something the club was looking to do, Clarke admitted: "I think certainly if you go up a division into the Championship it's a good time to have a look. To be honest, we have looked at this now and we're moving in this direction."
Former Legia Warsaw youngster Adam Ryczkowski 21 from Polish club Chojniczanka Chojnice is a very highly rated winger and a player I'd love this club to take a closer look at. A very tricky winger and has a good shot on him too, an ideal replacement for Bodin.
Midfielder Christian Kohler from FC Helsingor is another I rate highly.

I think the foreign route is definitely something that should be explored further. I don't see why we should restrict ourselves to these Isles. I'm glad we are making noises in this direction, although I'm not sure what happened with Dutton and Oviedo, it all went a bit quiet. We should firstly look to Ireland, there are at least 4 or 5 players that would significantly improve our first team over there IMHO.

The trouble is there are a lot of clubs in England that send scouts over to Scotland and Ireland and if a player is any good, they are likely to have 3-4 offers which makes it hard for us to compete, especially with the current facilities that we have. I suppose if Oldham are able to get Patrick McEleney it should give us hope that there are 1-2 good deals to be had out there. Michael Smith was a great find and Rory Gaffney has been good for us.

It's a good point about the competition, I suppose you have to just identify the players early and get in there before the competition, players like 17-year-old Beineon O'Brien Whitmarsh is one that springs to mind, he has potential. One good thing about players over there is they often only sign 1 year contracts so you can pick players up for free, like McEleney.

Players worth scouting Luka Menalo, 21-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina U21 international winger. 33 goals in 85 appearances for his club NK Siroki Brijeg in his home country. Another couple of goals here: I watched Menalo and Amer Gojak rip Wales U21's apart on S4C in a Euro Qualifier back in November and Menalo looked well suited to the English game. He's only playing in front of 1,300 supporters for his club side and if we could tempt him here and he was affordable, I reckon he could be worth big money in next to no time. A few more goals. Looks a talent.

17-year-old, 6ft 1in, New Zealand attacking midfielder/striker Max Mata could be worth keeping an eye on. Good in the air, quick, holds the ball up well, eye for goal. He's the youngest scorer in the history of New Zealand's ASB Premiership (15 years, 4 months and 23 days), has scored 10 goals and created 7 assists from 20 starts in that league and he impressed at the U17 World Cup scoring against Turkey.

I wonder if anyone attached to the club is aware of or has watched Glenavon's 20-year-old Northern Ireland U21 midfielder Mark Sykes? He has excellent technical ability/quality from what I've seen and impressed this season scoring 9 goals and creating 6 assists from 16 appearances in all competitions. "There only two players I have played in the Irish League with over the last 15 years who I would compare him with are Stuart Dallas and Liam Boyce" said Glenavon's manager and former Northern Ireland international striker Gary Hamilton. "For me, at this age, he is potentially better than the two of them and he should be playing in England or Scotland." www.bbc.co.uk/sport/amp/football/42221467Another player over there worth a closer look is Crusaders' 21-year-old Northern Ireland U21 international winger Gavin Whyte. He has scored 11 goals in 23 appearances this season. Previously trialled at Everton and Celtic. Perhaps DC could have a word with Mark McChrystal about the lad... 2 goals Quality hat-trick 2 goals Nice strike here recently from Whyte and a sensational freekick from Sykes a couple of years ago... Queens Park Rangers could be set to launch another summer raid on the Irish League to bring Crusaders winger Gavin Whyte to Loftus Road. m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/irish-league/crusaders/qpr-leading-chase-to-land-crusaders-rising-star-whyte-this-summer-36477577.html

It would put Wheeler down the pecking order further if this happens, scores goals from the right side so would fill the void that Bodin has left us. Even JET might be worth taking a look at with our contacts with Holloway. He had a decent record with a poor Gillingham side last year.

I'd still like us to put in a bid for the lad Whyte, he looks a player. The QPR link could just be paper talk because they signed the lad Smyth from over there recently. Wheeler isn't even on the bench today for QPR, worth an enquiry. I like JET's ability, it's his attitude I would question...he has been accused of going missing and looking disinterested at times.
