Some dodgy happenings from the authorities in Barcelona where people are being beaten up and arrested for voting in an independence referendum.
I realise the Catalans can't just declare UDI, but I didn't realise they could be clubbed over the head for a vote about whether they might do it.

I feel your frustration, Hugo. I`m at one with your exasperation. Can`t we have a separate section, for those who want to turn everything into an anti Israeli rant?

As much as I didn't like the tone of either the Scottish Independence or Brexit referenda, especially as they were (and perhaps for too many remain) quite divisive, I do feel proud that we were able to have them. As far as this is concerned, I think Madrid fell into a trap. They should have let it go without interference and then played on a low turnout. By going in heavy handed it would encourage those who otherwise would have ignored it to vote.

Yeah I read a little about it earlier in the week and the stance of Madrid and the police was one of the issues cited over and over by Catalan people as the main reason to vote for independence.

It is so sad that the police in a civilised country could behave this way.In the last 20 30 years we have seen forced unions in Eastern Europe crumble as individual countries wanted their independence and to govern themselves.Yet in Western Europe the opposite has happened as countries are forced together under one Union ruled by Germany while the taxpayers of the UK have to pick up the bill.I hope the Catalans get their independence.....anything that will halt the United States of Europe will be a good thing.

Politics of division is much easier.
Personally I'd love to see a World Union but maybe I've just watched too much Star Trek.

What an inspiring leader for the Catalans, Carles Puigdemont is proving to be. He helped engineer this referendum, encouraged the people to vote "leave", which they duly did, and now he`s frantically backing away from the result. Makes me glad we`ve got Theresa May at the helm. Almost.

A proper vote that everyone can attend and was conducted in a safe way would be preferable. Many voters stayed away, though I think the result may have been the same.

So, Thursday is the day then.
Madrid is threatening autonomy suspension if independence is called and wants clarification that it won't be. According to Sky News Rajoy has stated any ambiguity will be treated as a Declaration of Independence so article 155 will be invoked. To prevent this, the Catalonian President has to essentially say he called their bluff and lost.
Such a mess.

They stuffed it right up those darn aliens!
