Went today and that was a perfect illustration of following a lower league club away.
The train was rammed on the way to Manchester. We caught a FREE bus from Picadilly to Victoria station then a 15 minute journey to Rochdale.
We were standing outside Rochdale station wondering how to get to the ground when a Rochdale fan pulled up and said "Jump in lads, I'll take you to the ground"
Once at Spotland we went into the supporters club, were made very welcome and had a few pints and chat with their very friendly supporters.
Went into the away stand and found it to be a nice, functional stadium, big enough for heir level of support, which today was, frankly pathetic. I suppose we had 2 - 300 there.
The game was played in a howling gale which swirled mercilessly around the fairly open stadium. We conceded the inevitable early goal, settled and probably shaded the rest of the game but came away empty handed.
When the whistle went we left the ground and the rainfall was Biblical, it was absolutely p1ssing it down.
Got back to Picadilly and the train was rammed to cattle truck specification. We were squashed in a vestibule with a load of Man City supporters. They were amazed that we had travelled all that way to watch our team. Made all sorts of gratuitous comments about following your home town club and not Glory Hunting, before admitting they were from Macclesfield!
Got home at 10:30, still sodden through. Would I do it again?
You bet!
