Joe played yesterday in front of the back four and was exceptional. He picked up the lose balls, nullified Dack, played the simple ball. He is much more suited to playing there than Chris Lines. He protected the defence well. As I have been saying all season it is suicide playing Sercs and Lines together away from home, I am even doubting it is good at home.
Why hasn't D.C. played Parts in that position before? Surely can only be fitness concerns! He now needs a run of games in that position, even at home, so we stiffen up our defence. We have lost 12 games this season which is higher than any teams in the division including the bottom 4. UTG

Completely agree it's something I think I DC needs to stick with. The big thing I noticed was how he organised those around him he was constantly talking & moving people around. The big plus is that he's not just a stopper he's a good footballer barely wasted a pass yesterday & did the simple things well. Also think it's no coincidence that Ollie Clarke had a much better game with a bit of protection behind him. Personally I'd keep the same 11 Sat (assuming Sweeney is fit) although the one worry I have is Smith. He wasn't tested much yesterday but I just get the feeling he has a rush of blood in him, Slocombe seems a calmer presence & fills me with a bit more confidence.

It's funny as with his stature I thought he looked more like a central player. Having said that his crossing is good. Our midfield has been poor as a unit this season so he needed to try something different. I sense a bit of friction with Lines and DC sometimes but maybe wrong.

Agree. I thought he was excellent breaking up play and then getting us going with some fabulous balls forward.
Let's hope he starts there next week.

I suggested playing Parts in the DCM role two months ago, god knows why it took DC so long to try it in an away game! Its an away game at Portsmouth coming up so D.C. may take the easy option and play three centrebacks. Bola--Lockyer---Sweeney---Broadbent---Brown Bodin--------Lines-----Clarke------Sercombe ----------------Harrison------------------- Playing 5 at the back will just bring pressure on the back line, something they usually struggle to cope with? If Clarke is struggling and Sincs still out an interesting move would be to play Locks, or Partington? in CM, not ideal but DC as to do something drastic soon to stop the run of away defeats.

Really hope DC gives Partington a run of games in defensive midfield so we can see if he can perform regularly in that position and if he can that might take some pressure off the January window.

My first move tomorrow morning would be to make Joe Partington Captain and give him until the New Year to prove himself there. We need a settled side because the "Projects" have been found out. I am not convinced by either keeper but feel Slocombe just edges it for me.
Slocombe
Leadbitter Lockyer Sweeney Brown
Bodin Sercombe Partington (Capt) Harrison
Gaffney Telford
Give then the next five or six games and see where it takes us and if you want to DC call it a "six game project"

I agree with others that Parts would appear to be a Captain in the making. He has the right temperament for it, and is a very dependable, professional performer on the field. With all due respect to Lockyer, he simply isn't Captain material in my eyes, and Parts would be a safer choice, leaving Locks to concentrate on getting back to his form of the last 2 or 3 years.

OMG what an over reaction 'Parts for Captain' based on a good 70 mins away from home. If he plays there next week at home to Rotherham and flops what do we do then?
DC is obviously experimenting with this (put him on in that position for the last 20mins or so v Scunthorpe a couple of weeks also) so let him try it for a while and see how it goes over a number of games before we get carried away....
FWIW he was my MOM yesterday too.

FWIW he was my MOM yesterday too. Not an overreaction at all. He was Captain at Eastleigh and they were gutted to see him leave. I've felt he would make a good captain for us very soon after he arrived, not based on 1 match.

FWIW he was my MOM yesterday too. Agreed, too early to assume he's the answer to the defensive midfield quandry but I'm hopeful. Ability to play two games in a week might be an issue later in the season. As for captancy again let's see if he holds his place first but he was captain at Eastleigh and so some evidence he might be able to fill that role if it proves necessary.

He creates very little, and even I could get one Hollywood pass out of every 5 to get to one of our players. Other than that he can't tackle, can't head a ball, and hits about one decent shot a season. Just not good enough.

Not a criticism of him and I agree he deserves a run of games there. But I don’t think you can make him captain based on one performance. If he plays there all through December and continues to play well then do it in the new year. But if he plays there the next two games and has shockers then he’s going to be dropped again, and making him captain would’ve turned out to be an awful decision.
