That rule covers outfield players too. So any hand ball in and around the box is subject to that rule. But in this case, we're talking about a goalkeeper. Yes, but read the whole rule. A player gets sent if they deliberately handle the ball only if it denies a sure fire goal. That can be inside or outside the box and relates to all players. If a player (other than the keeper) does it inside the box then it's a sending off and a pen. Gilks handled outside the area so is potentially a sending off but as Ellis wasn't bound to score from so far out wide and with defenders covering, it wasn't a goal scoring position and therefore not a red card offence.

I see what you're saying. I agree that a sending off would've been harsh in this case, and would've ruined the game.

Well if Puddy had gone at Wembley I think we might still be in the conference small dividing lines. Funny how the Lino missed it twenty feet in front of him! Puddy should have gone, that decision was wrong we got lucky. No, the yellow was the right decision. The handball prevented a cross, not a goal.

Spot on, why do so many people think that a handball by a goalkeeper is automatically a red card, when they wouldn't think it was a red card if it was an outfield player?
