Does anyone use 'Alexa' in their homes for anything useful? I've bought some Philips Hue bulbs for the Lamps we have downstairs, as there are two in the kitchen, two in the hallway and three in the living room. Generally I am the last to go to bed, and it used to pee me off having to walk around and switch them all off. Now, using Alexa, it's really easy. I love it! Not only that, but for the first time the Lamps can be dimmed, and the type of light is changeable (White, Cool White, Warm White etc etc). I also use Alexa just before leaving for work, as she provides me with news on any traffic problems and will then suggest the best route. I also have it set so that if returning home and all the lights are off that the hallway lights will turn themselves on as soon as the router identifies my phone is in range, so basically as soon as I pull up in the car outside, the hallway lights come on.
My next target is to get Alexa to be able to control the outside electric blinds I have on all the windows.

Can Alexa pick a winning team for Saturday? No, but my seven year-old has discovered there is a Fart Skill, and if you ask Alexa to fart, she lets out a ripper ! He thinks it's funny (so do I) but She Who Casts No Shadow thinks it's disgusting.

I'm there's a google search that brings up the best questions to ask Alexa, with some great answers.
Complete and utter waste of time if you ask me. Or Alexa.

For example, here in Germany many many houses have exterior metal roller blinds. In my house, every window/patio door has an exterior roller blind, and they are all controlled by an individual switch on the wall for each roller blind. At the moment, I have to physically walk to each window, and press the up/down button to work the blinds. This can be a PITA. If they can be controlled by voice, I can work the blinds, both upstairs and downstairs, without leaving my seat. It should also be possible to set them to 'follow the sun' so as the sun moves in the sky, then various blinds around the house go down to shield the sun from shining directly into the rooms. It would also be useful when on holiday and the blinds could be set to lower at dusk, and then rise in the morning, giving the impression that somebody is in the house. This is the 21st Century ! You've got to move with the times.

Nothing wrong with walking around the house buck naked pretending to be Tarzan..........or is that just me? Nah, two main reasons for the external roller blinds. One, the summers here can be brutal with temperatures reaching 42 or 43 degrees, so in the mornings it is good to have the blinds down on the side of the house the sun is shining, and then as the sun moves across the sky, in the afternoon we need blinds on the other side of the house to come down and the ones that were down to come up. It really helps keep the house cool. Next is security. When the blinds are down, it is really difficult for Mr Burglar to get in.
