I'm confused on the we haven't replaced Gaffney comments, wasn't that the reason we brought in the fella from St. Mirren? Ok if you think he's the Gaffney replacement then it's the Telford one we're still missing...write down the squad leavers and the squad joiners and then see whether that leaves us weaker or stronger..... Burn....replaced by no-one ....stronger Brown...replaced by no-one (till Monday) ... weaker (at the moment) Sweeney...replaced by Upson...weaker defensively but stronger in midfield ...price you pay to rebalance the squad Bola ...replaced by no-one...weaker Broom...replaced by Matthews...jury's out Moore...replaced by Rodman...based on past performance stronger Telford...replaced by Reilly...jury's out Gaffney...replaced by no-one...weaker and now potentially Harrison without a ready made replacement identified...weaker. Development squad..Ten Grotenhuis replaced by Widdrington jr ...stronger by the look of it, seven or so others not retained and two promoted from the academy...weaker - hence the plethora of triallists . i think we're maybe attempting to get through this season with a couple less first team squad members (say we don't replace Bola and Burn) and expect more from Menayese and the development trio of Kelly, Baghdadi and Russe to plug those gaps, that still leaves the Gaffney and Brown roles to be filled with the likelihood that just as we get Brown's replacement over the line on Monday the Harrison void is about to become a reality at the same time.

There was always the chance that Ellis would leave so I very much hope that the club have two strikers and a left back in mind and also a strong centre half if Lockyer leaves. It is about time this club became proactive rather than reactive as in the case of Matty Taylor. There was always the chance Taylor would go and DC should have signed a replacement BEFORE he went.

Ah, be fair ..he thought he had done that when he signed Luke James for the season prior to MT coming back to train and play with us for another few months. It was only later we realised he'd signed someone Tom Nichols could outscore!

Just listened to DC comments at the end of the for game and I am totally convinced that this bloke does not have a clue what he is on about In pre season friendlies this is the time to bed in new players and get the squad working together and understand each other's movements and to Ray out set pieces You get fit in the gym and on the training ground Here we go again into a new season without a clue what is about to happen No comment about Ellis why can we not be kept in the picture after all the newspapers know what is going on but it's a big secret to us wow This coming season I can see is going to be desperate and we will be lucky if we stay up unless there are some big moves before the end of the transfer window otherwise DC 's head is on the chopping block and not before time I understand your frustration, but the news is there is no news. Not yet. I totally get the concept of bedding in players etc, maybe that's slightly old fashioned? If we make signing or two there won't be time anyway.....if we play all our starting line up, we show our hand too early to potential scouts. We know nothing as fans, so opposition know even less.....if you think dc knows less than all that, good luck to you! I see he's playing a match fitness game, tinkering with formation and different player in different positions ideas....in essence a training module. He'll take away more than as fans we'll ever know.... if he doesn't, we'll be blissfully unaware! Clever guy.. Yeah and his record speaks for him , not some Numpty on a forum who thinks he’s crap or another who thinks he’ll be the next England manager. It’s a results business and DC has got the results so far therefore I trust him to do it again. It could go tits up next season or we could win promotion , none of us have got a clue from a couple of friendlys in July.

Blimey. This is Bristol Rovers, not Chelsea. We can't stockpile players ib case some leave. I do wonder what people expect sometimes. We have one of the best managers we've ever had, we are in our historical 'natural' position and finally have owners and a structure that is trying to undo 20+ years of neglect since we returned to Bristol and progress the club foward in a sustainable way. This squad as it stands today is good enough for another mid table finish. If Ellis goes, he needs replacing, but we have to be realistic and accept that we are not going to spend more than 500k (and probably nowhere near that) to do so.

Good analysis, but a some of those players were preemptively replaced in the January window. Craig was bought in because Sweeney wasn’t pulling his weight, Burn was always going to go as Menayese has been showing that he can step up. Kelly is looking like he will cover the Bola role but we really need to get that new signing over the line. With this in mind Upson is filling a void so we look stronger there and in preseason he has looked like he will make the difference. Bennett and Mensah were bought in to fill the Montano and Bodin gaps. So if you look at the wings collectively missing Bodin hurts but we definitely look more balanced than 12 months on average. For what it’s worth Matthews has looked fantastic to me, but I’m not convinced from what I’ve seen from Rodman so far. its upfront were looking ropey - if we can’t sign some extra strikers in we will be looking a bit threadbare. Fix it and we will look very good. I have lost faith in Tom Nicholls personally - the miss yesterday said it all.

Gas 1970 WHY should we accept that the Owners won't spend money that we get in from transfers? Oh of course we are Bristol Rovers. To date the Owners have done nothing to really convince me that they have any real ambition for the club and it is very easy for them to sit pretty under the umbrella of Evolution not revolution. Decent strikers cost money even at League 1 level and it seems to me that unlike years ago we can't even afford to sign players from clubs like Cheltenham let alone bigger clubs.

Decent strikers cost money even at League 1 level and it seems to me that unlike years ago we can't even afford to sign players from clubs like Cheltenham let alone bigger clubs. Two reasons spring to mind straight away. One - we lose loads of money every year so there will always be a pressure to keep us on an even keel. Two - players worth £1m upwards don't come to League 1 clubs. Whether we like it or not, we are a selling club who have to sell players from time to time, partly to help.make ends meet and partly to allow players to fulfil their potential. Nothing exceptional in that, most clubs are the same at this level. Fortunately, we have a brilliant manager who has kept progressing us against this background. Most clubs aren't that lucky. The owners have spent money on Nichols and Sercombe in the last 12 months. OK, so one of those signings hasn't worked out yet, but that doesn't take away the fact that the money was spent.
