Torquay United today unveiled the first details of a £40m plan for a new 10,000-seater stadium, hotel, homes and ‘event arena’.
The new home for the Gulls forms part of an ambitious development which it is understood would take shape on the outskirts of Torquay.
The new development would be at Nightingale Park at the Willows, including the proposed new homes.
More details are expected to be released when Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver hosts a Mayor’s Forum at the Riviera Centre on Thursday evening.
Club owner Clarke Osborne of Gaming International says the project is designed to launch Torquay United to “sustainable success on the pitch, bringing major benefits to the local economy and community, and strengthen the visitor attraction to the area”.
The announcement comes in the same week as the bombshell that Torquay United will ground-share with Truro City at Plainmoor for the coming season at least (see pages 75 and 76). Gaming International’s proposal says the development will be an “expandable” 10,000-seat community stadium and 30,000-capacity event arena to include spaces for exhibitions and music events.
Nightingale Park
One of GI’s most successful projects is the National Bowl at Milton Keynes which has a capacity of 65,000.
GI also operates stadia at Swindon, Poole and Reading.
The Torquay proposals also include a hotel, integrated hospitality, food/beverage and leisure facilities and indoor leisure attractions.
The site will have substantial car parking and transport links, and could create more than 350 full-time jobs.
There will also be an ‘enabling’ housing development which will help to offset costs, although the club’s announcement does not say where this would be.
A separate proposed stand-alone Football Academy and sports Centre of Excellence will provide facilities for community football and the club’s youth development programme together with facilities to attract and accommodate foreign students of football.
Mr Osborne said: “This is a great opportunity for us to join the increasing number of businesses planning major investment into Torbay to showcase our project which will bring major inward investment, long term sport and leisure facilities and equip the club to climb back into the Football League and stay there.”
