Which striker should we have signed that would have avoided criticism? I'm mean that would have been realistic. As things stand even the likes of Danny Graham would be better than nothing. At least he could bring some experience to the forward line. Even help wake the defenders up in training.

I know people are frustrated but it’s not like we didn’t try? Decent contract to Gnaduillet, Stockley was very close to signing, not that anyone wanted him on the forum but we also went in for Smith and no doubt others as well.... we had a clear brief, big, strong striker with proven experience who was ready to walk straight into the team.... other than those mentioned, not many and we weren’t going to gamble on an unproven youngster with no league experience -if we did then we may as well play our own unproven youngsters like Walker or Phillips etc....
We can still sign free agents and I’m sure some will become available... just look at Charltons squad size.....
Don’t sign a striker - the club is slagged off Sign an unknown unproven youngster - club gets slagged off
we we’re never going to be spending transfer record fees for a striker in our current climate....
like I said in a different post - all a lot of this forum does is just moan moan moan....
im not happy that we haven’t signed anyone but I’m not jumping up and down and toy throwing demanding explanations or resignations about it.....

Which striker should we have signed that would have avoided criticism? I'm mean that would have been realistic. that's down to a guy whose specific job is recruitment. Out of the thousands of professional footballers out there from under 23 to seasoned pros he couldn't find one? Crikey pirate finds a least one a day that may be available To me it seems the guy does the bare minimum to get a wage. In the old days that was called swinging the lead

Which striker should we have signed that would have avoided criticism? I'm mean that would have been realistic. With all due respect, I’m not a recruitment manager at a football club so I don’t really have the time to be scouting players and talking to agents. If it was that easy it wouldn’t take a paid member of the football club to make signings. The fact that we all knew in August that we were a striker short tells you everything. Incompetent is putting it nicely. I’d imagine there were a few Gills fans who lumped on us getting relegated when we signed their winger, who is far from prolific, as our number 9. When you realise that our back-up to Hanlan is Ayunga, who to me looks like Ben Hunt the 2nd, you know we’re up the creek. Our problem this season was always going to be a lack of goals, but as it happens we can’t keep them out either.

I think now we’ve got the dream team of the three stooges heading up the club we maybe expected more.
Widdington has been developing the transfer plan years in advance, what was it three windows ahead or something.
Starnes has been in charge of the clubs DNA for a good while now, so I’m sure he knows who has the genetic make up to join us.
And Tisdale has been around at this level for years and apparently been a great success so his old chums will no doubt be falling over themselves to sign for us.
Well it all seems to be going to plan then. Good job we’re not paying these three or it may appear a bit embarrassing

How does any forum member know we were close to signing Stockley? Given that he eventually signed for big spending Charlton we were probably never even close to signing him.
Still can't understand if we did have money to sign Stockley etc we couldn't get another striker for the money.

My theory.. (which means the club is really gambling on staying up) is that we will go in on the Free Agents in the summer of which there will be loads and I think I remember Percy said that Stockley will be holing more talks with us in the summer.
I reckon we were trying to get a big lad on loan but it didn't materialise within the budget (Smith to Scotland for example) we had set ourselves to remain a club at the end of all this covid crisis - remember we are talking about substantial loses every week.
In terms of just adding a Prem youngster, we could have done that and we probably tried, but we also have players like Walker who also fit that category as being young and eager etc. I think the missing part of all this is that we wanted a big lad and that isn't something we have hidden away.
What's done is done and yes we could still sign free agents (Danny Graham for example) but I can't see that happening as we didn't do that in the summer.
As we are in the position we are in, we are going to have to accept that Ayunga is that big lad and he is going to need minutes in order to get up to league 1 speed and gel with his team mates on the competitive match days. When we do this is going to be difficult though as we are out of the cups and trophies that would have been useful for him.
Our only other option is to not lump it up to Hanlan and Nicholson as much as we do... which is why I think we have reverted back to the 3412 formation we have seen. On that... I wouldn't be surprised to see us set up like that again tonight although I really don't want that to happen as we always look way to open
Anyway... my point being... I feel we have gambled on staying up with this squad, now fasten your seatbelts we are in for one hell of a bumpy ride!

Not sure what the obsession with signing a striker is. We've scored 12 goals in our last 10 matches. We're currently averaging a goal a game this season. It's not like we can't score.
It's pretty obvious the problem is the 35 goals we've shipped at the back. Solving that problem will change our fortunes far more quickly than a new striker.

Still can't understand if we did have money to sign Stockley etc we couldn't get another striker for the money. It was reported in the press and by Sam Frost so I’m only going by that unless he’s lying? Having the money and being prepared to pay it for the striker are 2 different things and if I’m not mistaken it was wages and length of contract rather than fee that we were paying out..... if its believed Posh wanted £1mill plus for Eisa and whilst he’s ok, I wouldn’t put him in the same quality as JCH.... and I don’t think he’s worth that amount.... just shows how inflated fees are in this window.... The club have tried really really hard to get the right forward in - one that would improve us, but ultimately that right forward wasn’t there.... and I have known hesitation in believing that since ‘Tis arrived we’ve been looking..... remember, the change in Manager will have changed player requirements in the window, meaning in same cases it was start from scratch again....

It's very bizarre how this transfer window turned out. There must have been a serious disconnect between TW's recruitment strategy and the realities of the spending cap, whether that be self imposed or not. I can't believe that TW and his scouting team will not have had numerous options in various price brackets, but we have somehow ended up with nothing. How can this be? I always like to give the benefit of the doubt, and I am sure January dealings are difficult, but to have made only 1 signing of a RB is frankly nowhere near good enough for a club that is underperforming and stretched with injuries. Tisdale has gone on record in the past saying he doesn't like loans, but loans would have been better than continually flogging the few players we do have fit, because they won't stay fit much longer with the number of games coming up, and they certainly won't be performing to an optimum level that's for sure.
There are a lot of things I like about the club's strategy, but this season and this window have been big failures.

I don’t actually think a goal a game is a good ratio. A striker wouldn’t have automatically made us better, but it would have given us options to play players in their natural positions and take the ease off of other players. If Hanlan picks up any niggle then were beyond doomed.

I would argue that one of the reasons we concede so many goals is that we can’t keep the ball in the oppositions half. Hanlan isn’t the best at holding the ball up and Ayunga is even worse. I’ve lost count of the number of games this season where I have thought we could have played until midnight and not scored. We are toothless in both boxes and weak as wee in the middle.

We’re sh*te at both ends but we are the joint lowest scorers in L1 - so I can see why the majority of the fanbase wanted a new striker! Also, at the back we have a bunch of experienced players (Ehmer, Baldwin, Williams etc.) who’ve proven themselves as dependable L1 performers over the years, so you’d hope the problems at that end can be rectified with the current players. The same can’t be said for our inexperienced & unproven set of strikers.

Used to say years ago that the secret of a good team was the spine...4 good players can paper over a lot a cracks in a team. Reliable Goalkeeper, Dominant Centre-half, Midfield-general and a goal-scoring Centre forward. At present we have none of them.
