Don’t get me wrong, I am among those who think that GC should now be given the job, at least until the end of the season. But before we go ahead and do that, I do think we need to acknowledge that we have lost a lot of coaching and managerial experience with the departure of DC and MS. Everything is going very nicely for GC at the moment with 3 wins on the bounce. But imagine if in a month or two we experience the opposite, and have 3 or 4 defeats in a row and get dragged back into the relegation zone. The mood of the fans would be quite different to what it is today, and the players would be more nervous as a result of the situation. What experience coild GC draw on then, or who could he turn to for support and advice? So I do think that we should go ahead and give the role to GC for the rest of the season (and do it ASAP so he has full control of any January transfer dealings). But I do think that we also need to appoint someone with experience to work with him as a first team coach / director of football...call it what you will. An experienced head to get us to the end of the season, whom GC can lean on when things aren’t going quite as swimmingly as they are right now. Any thoughts? And if you agree, any names you would suggest who would be willing and available to take such a role for the rest of the season? It’s a good point but surely if and when he’s given the job until the end of the season then he should be able to decide who this extra experienced man is ? People crying out for Holloway but does Cogs even know Holloway ?

Completely agree, as GC says it's not time now to think we've cracked it, and that goes for the board as well. They have to support GC or whoever they appoint as much as they can in January. It may be true that the Wage Cap has already been max-ed out so perhaps we'll have to try to get a few out before getting one or two in, but as long as the wages are within the limit there should be no reason they can't fork out a decent amount for transfer fees or signing-on fees, surely? I welcome anyone who knows more about how the system works to tell me otherwise as I'd rather be fully aware of the facts rather than blindly stating requests that are not feasible. i know many love Tom Lockyer but if we had a 2m bid for him early in the window I would cash in if they were going to reinvest in the team, could get 4 good players for that Lockyer is an average league 1 center half no way is he worth £2 m in my opinion. Needs to learn how to pass a ball well then could perhaps be worth that.

GC needs to be appointed sooner rather than later for me as the January transfer window opens tomorrow and I suspect a lot of wheeling and dealing will have to go on with people like Adam Smith and possibly Stefan Payne on their way out and reinforcements on their way in to help carry this momentum on for the rest of the season. GC can't do this effectively unless he can plan for the long term and gets the green light to start assembling the squad in his image.
I'd definitely be an advocate for a DoF or an experienced assistant manager, as others have pointed out, this is GC's first managerial position and whilst I don't doubt his ability to coach and manage us effectively on the pitch, he said it himself in his post match interview against Oxford, he does not yet know the procedure for the disciplinary process with regards to Payne's absence and an experienced head in the world of football to take him under their wing and give guidance on this and the challenges he might face ahead may be beneficial for all involved.
The time for caution in my opinion has come to an end, the board were right to give it some time so Coughlan could stake his claim to the job but now he has done so and proved himself to be a real success, after the Burton game a decision needs to made and plans drawn to ensure that we survive and thrive in L1 for the seasons ahead.
On a side note, I really hope Mansell is promoted to some capacity within the new coaching staff when the new manager is appointed, he knows this club inside and out and would be an excellent influence on the dressing room as well as providing some continuity from the last regime to the new one.

Though GC has done an amazing job I worry that we are also experiencing bounce at the moment. The players are playing for their places or future in some cases they have to impress GC or whoever takes over. We seen it with Ward and other managers though strangely not DC. If GC gets the job and the January window is gone, will the players go back to their old ways? . Very soon the club will have to make a decision and probably award a contract for at least 2 years as I doubt any manager these days will accept the job for less. I know it's completely different, but it reminds me of when you get a free trial with something like TV broadband package for example and everything is perfect untill you sign up for it. It's a gamble whatever happens and as we're a club that seems to survive from season to season I will be happy if we stay up this season and worry about next when it comes.

Na too many cooks spoil the broth - get TW working for his money and appoint new youth coaches - done!

I think we will be ok this season but I would be worried if we think everything is rosy long term. The actual football has been nothing special of what I have seen from him so far. It has been a needs must attitude and rightly so. I would like to see a template for further success though going forward. Hard work and passion will only take you so far. As we have mainly found under DC himself to be honest.

As we have mainly found under DC himself to be honest. What's this "special" football you're looking for, surely scoring goals and winning games is a good start after the rubbish we've suffered under DC for virtually a year? If Coughlin sticks to playing 4-4-2 with two wide men then I doubt many of us will complain. Coughlin's big challenge will be improving our activity in the transfer market, as the other posters highlights DC wasted the best part of £1m on non scoring strikers.

Good point, but to counter it I would say that Hargreaves is an experienced coach also, has done very well with our U23’s and Lee Mansell has also been doing good things with the U18s. He’s also a former captain of the squad and you can bet his man-management will be up there with DCs given how he led on the pitch. I still like pirates idea of getting Ben Garner involved too. Yes, can’t disagree with any of that. Lee M mentioned and Chris H, also an important part of the team. I wonder if GC and CH were to be confirmed until season’s end if Lee M would step into CHs position in the development squad. Perhaps this is one of the advantages and part of DCs legacy of having a good team around him. When things were going well istr CH being mentioned as a good shout if DC were to be poached by anyone. UTG! All this talk of Lee Mansell is quite disrespectful to Tom Parinello who is actually in charge of the U18’s with LM under him

That is why Lee Mansell is being proposed and not Tom Parinello, although Parinello is doing a great job with the academy and should definitely be recognised for it.

Payne won’t be going anywhere in the EFL this season, the only exception would be Shrewsbury who won’t have him. This has already been explained in other threads.
GC doing an amazing job so far, and probably end up with an offer for the rest of the season. But who knows with our hierarchy, the CEO has probably forgotten where he has put the CVs of any other applicants after his Christmas break. Garner would be my choice with GC as assistant. This could take the club forward with Garners recommended coaching abilities and contacts, and would also a cheapish option.
But what ever the hierarchy do, must be done soon as the transfer window opens tomorrow, and let’s hope they get it right.

I'm afraid it's a case of whatever they do will be wrong with a lot of the fanbase. Glad I don't have to make the decision and only the board know who has applied for the job, certainly don't think they have approached anybody who has not applied. As regards coaching abilities, thought our recently departed Manager had the highest available coaching qualifications? And we all now know what that meant, four or five changes every game and not knowing the difference between a left and right foot. Over qualified comes to mind when talking about lower league football in MHO.

“Let’s end the uncertainty” Bristol Rovers caretaker manager Graham Coughlan says he wants the position over his future decided quickly after watching his side beat Oxford United 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium. That was Rovers’ third successive win in the league.Coughlan, who took over after Darrell Clarke’s departure from Rovers on December 13,again made it clear he wants the manager’s job full-time.He said: “I know the call I would be making if I was in that position (the Rovers board of directors),but i am not.”I would love to be here thinking long-term and would love to be working at the club long-term.I don’t know what is going to happen. One thing I would like to stress is I don’t like the uncertainty. The players must be revelling in it,but I don’t like it.I would like to know where we are going and put a plan in place. As I say, they have asked me to do a job,the support they have given me has been tremendous, they are on the phone all the time and everything I have wanted they have given me.Let’s see where it goes and what happens.

As much as TP is an excellent coach, he’s lacks the playing experience and captaincy at this level which Mans has in scores. He was a respected general on the pitch and other pros will relate to that. TP has done wonderful things with the youth.

I don’t mean this disrespectfully and I appreciate im in the minority but there is no chance i would appoint GC permanently. Hes a brilliant chest thumping motivator who has got a great reaction out of this side. Appointing him would unless we are incredibly lucky just kick the long term replacement can down the road. He doesnt by his own admission have any experience and what does he know about recruitment?
For me hes bought us time to ensure we make the right long term choice be that in a week month or towards the end of the season

The erstwhile favourite for the job Michael Flynn’s last three results at Newport in league 2 hardly inspiring Lincoln a) 2-3 Crawley h) 0-0 and FGR h) 1-4 Garner has no managerial experience and has coached in higher divisions Cotterill definitely not wanted and Holloway rightly in my opinion won’t be considered. Therefore in my opinion it has to be Coughlan who has made an instant connection to both players and fans as has Hargreaves who comes over as calm and intelligent and a perfect foil.I’ve a feeling that Sturrock may be brought in as DOF which might not please everyone

Perhaps they will shock us with an announcement prior to the kick off tomorrow giving the job to GC that will increase the noise levels and be worth an extra goal to the team c u there

Agree almost 100 percent with Irene apart from doubts about Sturrock as I feel that GC would be quite able to run the playing side with support from Hargreaves,Widdrington & Mansell

I think we should hold a thorough recruitment campaign and interview as many suitable candidates as possible, if GC comes out on top fair doos. For me the next appointment had to be right and not just based on a bounce. I have zero faith in Widdrington
