I am usually a rose tinder but that’s putting our heads in the sand around our attacking ability over the last 18 months. The top half hasn’t been improved yet in my eyes.

t is just a matter of time before Bristol Rovers add young defender Liam Scales to their ranks, according to his current boss. The Gas have been on the verge of signing the 20-year-old Irishman from UCD in his homeland for close to a fortnight, however the Students' manager Colin O'Neill says it's simply bureaucracy that's holding the deal up. Graham Coughlan has already admitted his interest in Scales, who turned down a move to Manchester City under-23s in favour of first-team football. It was thought that late interest from Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town might scupper the move, but O'Neill now believes the deal is all but done and Scales is destined for the Mem. ------------ Do hope we sign someone creative and someone who can find the net too. It's probably International Clearance holding up the announcement - they can drag on sometimes. Looking forward to seeing him in a Gas shirt finally. Expect it will be in League cup or EFL cup to start with.

This is the sort of form that is used for international clearance:
The key element is:
"If the player will be registered under contract, and was previously registered as a professional abroad, please contact our Department as the clearance will need to be processed through the FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS)"
This is what takes the time.
In accordance with FIFA Regulations, National Associations have up to a maximum of 30 days in which to issue the International Transfer Certificate (ITC). If The FA receives no response after 30 days from the date of our request, a provisional clearance can be issued which enables the player to register and play for the Club.
We also have staff holidays to navigate.

Would Liam Scales have been a registered professional though? I thought he was a student playing for University College Dublin.

We're still in the EU - why would they need "international clearance" - a total red herring.

We're still in the EU - why would they need "international clearance" - a total red herring. Not an EU issue, a FIFA one. In accordance with FIFA Regulations, international clearance is required for any player over the age of 10 who is seeking to register for a club in England and has previously been registered for a club abroad (including the other Home Associations), or who is a foreign national seeking to register for the first time in this country. International clearance is applicable at all levels of the game. It is the registering club’s responsibility to verify a player’s registration history in order to ascertain whether international clearance may be required.

I know we were all hoping for a marquee striker signing, but we're Bristol Rovers and losing £3m a year, it ain't gonna happen. Last time we spent a fair wedge on a striker was Tom Nichols and look how that's worked out! He and Reilly will have gained some confidence from their goals in pre season so let's hope they can take that in to the league. JCH's injury may be a blessing which takes him out of the limelight and helps us hold on to him. Deon Moore has signed on and looks a prospect, and Smith will hopefully get more opportunities than DC gave his loan striker signings. A fully fit Rodman will chip in with a few and Bennett got goals for Swindon and looks to have returned with an improved attitude. Ollie Clarke guarantees you 5 screamers and if Sercombe can find his form of 2 years ago that's another attacking threat! I think I read that we finished 8th in the table after GC took over? Bury and Bolton start on - 12 points so that takes a lot of pressure off already below us. Keep swiping right on that Rose Tinder 😎🌹

Nichols, Reilly and even young Smith do not suggest to me strikers that will score 20+ goals between them - somehow I feel we will need to score somewhere around 60 goals to stay in this division - currently with little or no creativity in the side, I struggle to see where the goals that we will need are going to come from. IMO we are still three players short in total for midfield and forward positions. Ultimately we will 'reap what we sow' - I can only see a long hard slog ahead of us as things stand.

We do need to strengthen our attacking capability, whether that be with a striker or winger or, my opinion, a creative option in midfield. However, on the evidence of admittedly only one pre-season game, Scales, if he is a first team candidate for us, may be one of the most important signings we make. Our lack of central pace at the back without Lockyer was evident, whether we play a 3 or 4 man defence. Scales alongside one of Davies, Craig or Kilgour in a central 2, or alongside 2 of them in a back 3 might resolve that issue at least. But yes, without solving the forward problem it's hard to see how we can improve. My only hope there is that goals might stem from wide positions more. Leahy clearly has a cross on him, THD is obvious quality and Little looks the real deal. Maybe JCH and Nichols will thrive on that type of service, something neither have had in their time here. As it stands, relegation battle ahead, but we are capable of a comfortable 10th-14th mid table season.

I agree we could be a lot stronger, and ideally I would have offloaded Bennett and Reilly/Nicholls and replaced them with more productive players but it looks like GC is prepared to give them another chance. I just can't see us signing another attacking player unless someone leaves. I think Little and Leahy will get more crosses into the box this season and that may give our strikers something different to work with. I'm as apprehensive as the rest of you, but all it takes is one or two of our misfiring players to have an improved year in a slightly different system and it could make a big difference?

I wouldn’t take him too literally. He’s just as coy as D.C. He said before January he was happy with the squad and ended up moving on a number of players and bringing in JCH and Ogogo.

I’m not concerned if we sign scales and not another attacker.
We could play a back 5 with 2 wing backs, middle two and someone in the hole behind the two strikers.
Jaakola Davies Craig scales Little Leahy Agogo Clarke sercombe Nicholls JCH
Subs - Jordi, Kilgour, Kelly, Upson, rodman, Reilly, Moore
Back ups -Andre, meyanese, russe, mensah, Bennett , kavanagh,

I for one quite like the look of the team as posted by StokeLodge. from what I have seen and heard of LITTLE AND lEAHY they will provide plenty of forward threat and subs bench looks good to, I would add the likes of Tomlinson to the squad ,all in all squad carries more threat than last season and I am very optimistic of a comfortable top 10 finish, up the Rovers!

According to his manager he's gone!!! "“It’s just waiting on contracts to come through, be signed, and the next bit to be done. As far as I’m concerned, he’s left. I think it’s just going to be Bristol Rovers.”
