Right on top since lunch, 105/5.
If we can just get Smith out, usually when he's in, he bats for a long time.
Not looking good for Anderson, gone to hospital for a scan, after bowling just 4 overs.

End of the first day and it is now probably even steven, but you have to say that was very disappointing seeing as we had them on the ropes at 122 for 8, a great knock from Smith but we have let them off the hook by not being ruthless enough.
I know we were unlucky to lose Anderson and it has taken it's toll on our remaining bowlers but if the Aussies had us in a similar position, we would have been all out for 150 tops. They would have put 4 or 5 fielders right around the batsman and piled the pressure on. Oh well at least we never lost a wicket at the death.

What a frustrating afternoon after such a great start. I fear we will struggle tomorrow and a first innings deficit in a relatively low scoring game will see us lose. What are the chances of everyone looking back on the change in fortunes on day one of the series as crucial to us losing the ashes!

I must give a special mention to the two standing umpires, practically every decision the give has been wrong!
All I can say thank God we have the 2 reviews, with out 'em, things would be looking very different on the scoreboard.
I honestly haven't seen worse officiating in any sport, ever!!!

They both had a bad day yesterday. Not started too well today either, giving Root out when he missed the ball but it clipped the stump!

Proper Test cricket here. The pitch offers something for the bowlers, the batsmen are having to graft. Great stuff.

Exactly this. I'd much rather a game like this 300odd each innings, rather than what you see on the sub-continent 550-500-350 match drawn.
That change of ball has definitely helped the Aussies!

What a terrible day for England yesterday. They once again fell into that 'sleep mode' where they just appear to stop making the effort. All day long the match just appeared to amble along with Australia collecting runs. I tend to think that Root is a bang average Captain. Today they must bat all day for the draw, but the batsmen will be having nightmares about Lyon, when in reality he's just a bang average spinner.
England have to start looking at the next test from today. Archer will come in for Anderson. He was on the field yesterday as a sub fielder, so I think England were just giving him a bit of the taste for test match cricket. One thing I am looking forward to is Archer's batting. Apparently, the boy really can bat as he started out his career as a batsman. We haven't seen any evidence of this in the one-dayers, but maybe the test arena will give him a better opportunity to show what he can do. Moeen Ali has to be dropped. His batting has been terrible all summer, and yesterday his bowling fell apart. Rashid just has to come in for him. As for James Anderson, have we seen the last of him in a test match? I'm not impressed with Denly at four. Is it worth promoting Bairstow up the order and giving the gloves to Buttler?

I hadn't realised that there hasn't been a drawn test match in England since 2016 Vs Sri Lanka!!! Will today be the day?

As I said earlier though, yesterday Australia were allowed to accumulate runs, and we barely threatened them. Today, the ball is jumping all over the place.
