The build up begins next week with a one off test Vs Ireland. Jason Roy has been included in the squad, Archer & Wood miss out with both having side strain's. Would it be too much of a risk by putting Archer straight in the first game without any test match experience?
Roll on 1st Aug at Edgebaston, the semi Vs Australia proved what sort of atmosphere can be created there, IMO it'll go up a level for The Ashes.

Real shame, as he`d definitely be an asset if he could stay fit.

I think Wood is out for 6 weeks. In other words will miss the Ashes. Great shame esp as Anderson is a worry with his injury. At least Archer is a great find and will be a great replacement.

You`ve only got to look at their different actions, to see why one is always injured. Wood charges in, like Best Mate thundering up the hill at Cheltenham. Archer doesn`t have a long run up, and it`s so smooth and fluid. Hopefully, he won`t be beset by the problems that so many fast bowlers face.

Yes, it’s not hard to see why Wood suffers with ankle problems, the strain on his body must be intense. It looks like Archer gets his power and speed from his arms and shoulder. As you say quite different. Looking at fast bowlers generally for England Archer has given them more options and Broad and Anderson have to be carefully managed now imo. Not sure about others about at the moment. I’m probably biased watching so much of Somerset but last week against Notts Jamie Overton who is prone to strains and injuries bowled the fastest I’ve seen any bowler for a few years. The Notts batsmen were hopping about all over the place and were seriously worried by his pace. Kyle Abbott is the best fast bowler I’ve seen on the circuit over the past 3 years but for a couple of spells last week Overton was faster and he’s now looks stronger and more resilient but Somerset has to manage his bowling which they do very well. Archer although he doesn’t have the run up does remind me of Michael Holding in his prime. Smooth, effortless and a bit of a whip in his delivery to deceive the batsmen. If only he could be as good.

Not good news...
England fast bowler James Anderson has been ruled out of his side's Ashes warm-up Test against Ireland at Lord's.
Anderson, 36, injured a calf playing for Lancashire on 2 July.
England's record Test wicket-taker now faces a race to be fit for the opening Ashes fixture at Edgbaston on 1 August.
Warwickshire fast bowler Olly Stone, 25, has been named in the side to face Ireland and will be making his debut in Wednesday's game - as will 29-year-old Surrey batsman Jason Roy.
Roy starred with the bat in England's recent World Cup win but the 29-year-old has not played regular red-ball cricket.
Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer have side strains and were not named in the squad for the Ireland game.
Wood is unlikely to be fit before the fourth Ashes Test, which starts on 4 September, while England hope Archer could be available for the second Test, starting on 14 August.
England v Ireland: Jason Roy expectation a worry for Mark Ramprakash Anderson told BBC Sport on 19 July that he felt "good" and that he hoped he would be fit to face Ireland, but the match has come too soon in his recovery.
The Burnley-born player also said he believes England will be able to shift the momentum from their World Cup win to Test cricket.
"It's time to re-focus on to Test cricket," he said.
"We realise the dangers that the Australian team bring to Test cricket, so we're going to have to be fully focused on that."

The test match against Ireland has started well, England 42-6 ! World Cup hangover, or just complacency? Or sh**?

Roy Root Bairstow Moeen Woakes. I think those 5 are still watered only 5 runs between them including 4 ducks! Oh dear. Edit: 7 runs between them and 3 ducks, stunning.

Obviously they were trying out a few players. Will Rashid come back? Stokes will. Archer and Wood seem injured for the First Test. Do we play Bairstow purely as an opener and recall Jos Buttler to keep wicket ?The top three is a concern and that is why I feel Root should bat at three. Why wait for the two early wickets to tumble before he comes in?

Our top order has been a problem now for a few years, and like you I don't know why Root has started coming in at number 4.
I don't think Rashid will come straight back in, Ali is more than capable to be the main spinner, with Root to bowl a few if needed, you rarely see 3 spinners in England.
If Everyone is OK this would be the team I'd pick.
1.Rory Burns 2.Jason Roy 3.Joe Root 4.Ben Stokes 5.Jonny Bairstow 6.Joss Butler 7.Moeen Ali 8.Chris Wokes 9.Jofra Archer 10.Stuart Broad 11.James Anderson
Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Jack Leech, James Vince, Ben Foakes, Joe Denley, Adil Rashid As subs.
If Archer is injured I'd swap him for Sam Curran. If Anderson is Injured I'd swap him for Mark Wood.

Sky Sports News reporting that Root will bat at number 3, with Joe Denley coming in at number 4.
Which is the best thing, most teams will have their best batsman come in at number 3, don't know why Root wants to bat at 4?
