I think stadium has been dead long time, covid been the nails in the coffin. Don't believe Wael has money himself you need to build a stadium and just can't see investors coming in handing over 10s of millions. South Stand now 20 years old.As every other club widens the gap I do wish we could replace it with a proper stand albeit one of the temporary structure variety which we could sell on as don't think even Bloggsthorpe United would give us a fiver for the oldest and largest of our three tents.

I'm sure Frosty reads the forums, would be good if he could enquire with his contact whether the project is moving ahead without Rovers

Can you share details? It’s like a cryptic crossword on there. This was posted on the other forum by a poster called gasandproud: “I was one of the two local Gasheads who brought that second scheme that Swiss talks about to Rovers. Both of us are long-standing Gas Heads and in the not too distant future you will likely see details of what may go ahead without Rovers. Most sensible supporters may ask why on earth Rovers wouldn’t be involved. Since the initial ‘very close but no cigar’ moment that Swiss mentions I have tried, tried, tried, tried and tried again to re engage with the club and just meet excuse after excuse to the point it’s unprofessional and quite frankly laughable. There is absolutely no reason for the club not at least to have re engaged in discussions but alas it is not to be and we are now at the point which it probably is too late. I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed (because I am so passionate about our club). I have come off of social media for the fear I say something I regret! Clearly I am not going to go into detail (I can’t) but anyone who knows me knows the lengths we have gone to and the 18 months to two years of hard work we have put in. Those who know me will also know I am not in the business of making something like this up. I have toyed and toyed for months over whether to say anything but I feel at this point supporters do need to know that the club have had at least one credible opportunity to progress with a plan for the future. I suspect (and I can only suspect as I can’t say this factually) that the current board who I believe are salaried individuals wouldn’t necessarily want progress for the club through fear that it may mean their future isn’t so secure. None of them are Gasheads as far as I am aware (so I don’t actually blame them). All of the above aside just think about that set up.... a board full of salaried employees without an objective / unbiased view on the overall situation... How on earth can that be good for the progress of the club? I believe the line used about us / our scheme was a lack of credibility. That is difficult to answer at this stage because I guess the proof of how credible we are / the scheme is will depend on whether it gets over the line. What I can say is that if and when it comes into the public domain we can be judged on that point but the people and stakeholders so far engaged would not be deemed not credible so it is obviously serious enough for other large organisations to be interested! Other than a deep sense of regret on my part that I couldn’t get Rovers involved I still desperately want the club to progress. I have learned a lot personally and it’s fair to say mistakes have also been made on my side as well. Having seen lasts night debacle and looking at the overall mess we are in I just feel a sense of sadness that we are on a seemingly downward spiral yet again.” Thats fair enough but if gas and proud doesn't go public with this "proposal" how can we judge its viability? Maybe the club think the proposal is a bit limp.

I dont any stadium changes in my life time, not even to the bogs They might change suppliers and get Blue portaloos instead of Green. Then you will come crawling back cap in hand with an apology for the board. Ungrateful swine!

I'm sure Frosty reads the forums, would be good if he could enquire with his contact whether the project is moving ahead without Rovers Yes it is, we don’t need to concern ourselves with it any longer. This has been the case for twelve months or more. If you read my posts on the subject you will see that was stated sometime ago . Wael has taken some time to realise that a new stadium will see him lose sovereignty of the club, for want of a better word. This was the stumbling block for both the UWE and the Fruit Market. For Wael to retain full ownership of the club with all the rights that entails his only option in Bristol is redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium. That obviously brings a lot of issues too but it’s the nature of real estate in Bristol. Just ask the Guernsey tax exile. It’s true that some at the club benefit from long drawn out pipe dreams and that is something I’m sure Wael will deal with before moving on. Despite the distractions on the pitch currently, we are heading very quickly towards a fork in the road in regards to the clubs long term future. Some brave decisions need to be made before the prediction that no one will be talking about Bristol Rovers comes true.

Can we clarify which project is which as there are a handful which have been spoken about?

In the nicest possible way, I’m not surprised that the club didn’t feel it necessary to engage with an academic exercise of this nature as it has no real commercial credibility and particularly as they have their own issues to contend with at the moment.
As for the proposals, whilst the right questions are being asked the solutions are somewhat basic and piecemeal which won’t deliver a cohesive neighbourhood or give the area a unique identity. For me there isn’t a strong enough core idea upon which to hang the various redevelopment initiatives. As a flat area of land with defined edges, surrounded by water and great potential for transport linkages it has all the ingredients to make a fantastic environment no matter what uses are ultimately decided upon. Being the gateway to Bristol if you are arriving by train from the Bath/London direction it ought to showcase the best in terms of urban design quality and civic aspirations. As such a sports stadium is the perfect vehicle to display civic pride and could be a key component to anchor the overall scheme.

Make no mistake - we remain on a continual downward spiral and next season we'll be where we deserve to be - a tin pot mediocre 4th division side. Hopefully Wael will stick with us but I seriously have my doubts.

I guess I'm then confused, what was the hopeful announcement Starnes was talking about roughly 8 months ago? What are these other projects/possibilities at the fork? And finally, how do you know any of this?

Maybe its a time to reflect on where football is ,where it is going and where Rovers fit into it.
Its possible there could be league structure changes as well.
I guess the owners have to seriously decide whether they are able to finance the multi millions lost every year trying to do well in the championship . Do we see Rovers as a team that every 20-25 years will then get a 3-10 year spell in the championship. Before suffering relegation again.like the clubs history generally implies. Will things like ifollow become much more part of the fans involvement. Therefore actually meaning a huge stadium might not be required.
So if we see rovers as a yoyo champ/league one club in the future. How big a capacity is actually required ?
I might be inclined to build a 14-15,000 stadium on the Mem site . Try to include whatever other income streams as possible on the site and try to be sustainable. The stadium would certainly have a better atmosphere than a 1/4 full super stadium. I guess like so many Rovers fans im tired of the endless saga. Too many fans have passed away never seeing their team playing home games in a stadium that is nice.
Its time the saga ended.

I do wonder, The way retail is going with large stores and even shopping centers are disappearing as shopping moves online. If more potential sites might become available.

And finally, how do you know any of this? I think Starnes hopeful comment was that he could drag the fantasy out long enough to ensure a good few years of salary without the hassle of having to bring a solution to fruition. There are no projects, only choices to be made. One road leads to a new stadium in the far off future with Wael losing absolute control over the club. The other route leads to Wael retaining control with the Memorial Stadium being redeveloped to some extent or another. The only other option at this junction is to drive up and down the same bit of road that we’ve been on for the last 70 years whilst the rest of the football world disappear over the horizon. I can only say that my statements in regards to the Fruit Market site have proved to be accurate and the source of the information has proved entirely reliable.

It surprises me that a version of the Mem redevelopment supported by student flats hasn’t resurfaced. There is still demand for student housing and I would have thought that it’s proximity to Gloucester Rd and its bus routes would make it attractive.
It should be possible to tweak the scheme to a capacity of close to 20,000, and would require relatively little capital input from our owners. The main disadvantages would be the lack of capacity to expand and the difficulty of producing income streams apart from on match days.

Opposition fans love coming to the mem for night out. Get to the championship and youd have big clubs bringing- their fans for a weekened out. Students would much rather a beer at anchor and a stumble into stokes croft. Its a gem. Back the mem.
