A good piece here written in the Indy. Some hard truths for those of us on the Centre Left, not withstanding the ridiculous stance that is nationalism, and the rather sad spectre of Turkeys Voting for Christmas at the last election. Nationalism’s power as a vehicle for discontent grows ever stronger in the UK flip.it/cA0vgQ

Many countries are so why shouldn't we? Have you seen for example how proud Jamacains are of their country? Hopefully gone are the days when we get kicked around again. The press like to get hold of the loonies behaviour it's what sells papers, but real pride, confidence and self esteem doesn't breed violence. One thing it does breed is self assertion, totally proved at the GE.

I get the feeling you don't actually get out, talk and listen to all types of people, just an observation not a criticism, you just read papers and copy and paste. If politicians did this during their term in office or opposition they wouldn't be so dreadfully out of touch.

Funny you should claim that, you were part of the group shouting at me for travelling the other day..methinks you might want to look in the mirror. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the points raised in what was a balanced piece, in my opinion?

And then, as if by magic, this is revealed. Britain First says 5,000 of its members have joined Tories flip.it/LdFQ8l

Proud of the high cost of living? Proud of the stagnant wages? Proud of the homelessness epidemic? Proud of the housing crisis? Proud of the NHS waiting times?

And then, as if by magic, this is revealed. Britain First says 5,000 of its members have joined Tories flip.it/LdFQ8lFar more interesting is the dropping of the inquiry into Islamophobia. Pretty brazen stuff to make such a pledge on TV and then usher it out the back door. But then why should we expect anything else? The current Tory party are accountable to no-one but themselves and act as such. On the wider topic of nationalism itself is it too much of a leap to say that Europe seems to be back under the cloud that spawned National Socialism in the 1930s? Far right governments are springing up in places like the Uk and Hungary and there is a real appetite to blame all the troubles of the world on Johnny Foreigner. Note that I am not for one minute suggesting that this is going to end in extermination and gas chambers. It’s certainly interesting though how cyclical politics is and having moved on from the Second World War into a more enlightened era we find foreigners once again being turned into straw men to explain the failings of previous governments. It seems parallel with economics in that that Keynes guy argued that total cross border freedom of movement for finance was actually harmful and dangerous in the long run and everyone at the time seemed to agree. Yet no sooner was he in his grave than the financial centre in London had forgotten his teachings and an era of bloated financial excess resulted in 2008 and the proles bearing the brunt of mistakes made the rich elite. As a species we never seem to truly learn from our mistakes and the rise of nationalism is just history repeating.

......and a Happy New Year to all our readers And, ignore the question. Absolutely, I learnt long ago that it's impossible to have a discussion with anyone who just looks at one side. In this case the dark side. They are seemingly happy anchored there. To discuss with them is truly a waste of energy.

Or, most of us can view that as abject surrender to the counter argument put to you, because you, amongst others, have zero basis for your viewpoints that you can possibly quantify. One thing you say has a ring of truth for the centre left. There is zero point in making the case to you as you are absolutely not interested in detail. Which is why, I personally, fear nationalism will prevail.

Well it may be most of you, but it is not most of the country is it as we have seen a shining example of recently. Strong viewpoints by a very few people on a football forum doesn't represent the whole does it. If things don't go your way you say everyone else is wrong and yes thats your opinion but it doesn't make you right even though you think that it does.

Should this be a General section or Politics section? Just start a thread if there is something you wish to discuss.

The working classes are too dense to be trusted with anything, and need to be insulted until they choose the path of enlightenment. Oldie and Gas365 could really get their teeth into that one.

We've had that for months William. We could have.... 'Now that's what I call copying and pasting'
