Well this is fun isn't it? Just to post something that's actually on topic, it does seem, at the moment, that the death rate is slowly but surely decreasing, 16 yesterday I believe? I'm honestly hoping that we've seen the worst of it, there will be another short spike as people start to get back to as normal a life as possible, but fingers crossed we're coming out the other side. Agree with your sentiment Baggs, sorry for my part in getting dragged into another argument with this guy. To your point. No longer out of control, agreed. Whether we can maintain this downward path, or at least a plateau at a low level, remains to be seen. If by mid August we are still at the same infection rate, then yes, maybe the worse is over. I am not sure it's a good example but in Trump's America the new spike in infections is horrific since re-opening their economy.

I see the blame game has started. Johnson getting in the first blow. flip.it/y_ZXgaA lot of planning must go in to making him a reflection of his electorate. Conservatives have done a decent job on that front, it's no wonder his fanatics are whipped up.

As for the US, well they're even protesting against having to wear masks, and Trumps rally show them all bunched together without any shielding whatsoever. Going to be a load more deaths over there.

It's a disaster over there, exposing the social fractures in society and making them worse, egged on by a Neanderthal in the White House.

Yep as I said many weeks ago this was inevitable,we live in a Society where finger pointing is endemic everywhere and underpinned by the media, any post Covid enquiry will be pointless as we are not mature enough to examine the evidence and draw the appropriate conclusions as we always demand that there should be a "public humiliation " of someone . I am not absolving anyone of responsibility however, let's try to learn the lessons rather than stoke up a witch hunt which leads to public figures getting their retaliation in first and distracting from the core purpose of any enquiry.

Out of respect for the lives lost, out of the need to learn from the catalogue of errors, the need to implement change so as to stop the same thing happening again, I completely agree. I would say this though, Johnson could have shown leadership and rather than aim a first blow as a defence, he could have openly discussed addressing the issues that have arisen in a consultative manner. Even I would have respected him for that. But he didn't.

I'm honestly hoping that we've seen the worst of it, there will be another short spike as people start to get back to as normal a life as possible, but fingers crossed we're coming out the other side. I think we will see spikes that will require some form of local ‘lockdowns’ as and when required. I’m hugely concerned about the economic future with no end in sight to certain levels of restrictions in some sectors, for example great to see pubs open but in a few months as the weather turns how will they cope with a small percentage of their normal customer numbers? I’m also worried about sports being sustainable if they will be deprived of paying customers until a cure/vaccine is found? On the positive side even with a widespread spike everyone is now pretty well informed and understand social distancing and the risk factors of disease spread. I’d also like to see masks used a lot more in busy areas. The main positive for me is that since the initial surge of deaths the health services have got a much better handle on treatment and so with a relatively small percentage of the population ever requiring hospitals treatment and the decreased rate of deaths once in hospitals we should be quite hopeful of not having such high death figures in future?

Completely right Eric. The balance between increased infection and the economic impact of further extended lockdown is a very difficult one to judge, whatever party is in power. Personally I think Sunak has done a good job, let's all hope his actions bear fruit. I suspect his maintenance of demand in the economy will. Equally the guys & gals in the NHS appear to have done a top job. Experience, nothing like it, is there.

Agree,we have a demand/consumer borrowing economy,Sunak needs to be able to restart that if not there is little point in protecting jobs in sectors where demand has been lost, better off retraining folk to move into economy sectors that are vibrant. Not an easy balance to strike, will be a case of holding there collective nerve.

I was shocked at the £1.5b support for the arts and performing arts. Shocked but pleased.
