University had to change because we now want everyone going there, and as that’s the case, it has expanded past it’s roots of being a place only the most intelligent go to work out how to solve things like cancer, complex mathematical and engineering challenges etc, and it now offers a range of courses in all walks of life. Mainly this is funded by the student so be aware, while you believe these courses are useless (and rest assured, nearly every employer in the country agrees with you, they are useless) don’t forget they provide lots of jobs for the academic employees, lecturers etc and the large corporations who run them. Essentially further education is now actually further education (as most remember, eminently worthwhile) and a selection of courses designed to get the “I have a degree” on the CV whilst remaining quite fun. For the 23 jobs available for the 300 people nationwide doing the “football music degree” or the 0 jobs available in pop stardom for the 87,000 doing the music technology degree, I wish them all the best of luck with the student loan repayments and hope the resentment towards the educationa establishment who sold you this colossal waste of time isn’t enduring! Just imagine, if people saved their time and didn't learn such frivolous and pointless activities such as singing and making music, we'd never have this thread 😉 So whilst something may not be financially positive, it's important to remember the other things that certain subjects add to life. I'll just go back and tell Leadbelly he should stop dreaming of Irene and take up accounting or something proper 😋 Everyone should play some kind of music in my opinion.... I regret that I didn't start before the age of 15 but how good it is to simply try to understand music.... I won't win any prizes for my musical ability but its something I'm so greatful exists in my life....

My steel string guitar and my keyboard are stored at my mums place, but at the flat I've got my Spanish guitar and the violin.... I'm decent on the six string, average on the ivories, and absolutely crap on violin.... But I can make it sound like the velvet underground which is cool....

Ledbelly, not any musician of note had a music technology degree. I’ve been playing instruments since age 8 and I would wager this is of more value to music than operating Cubase. Having been paid for it commercially, I can state that at no point was I asked for my qualifications! Each to their own, I would be very careful in recommending my own children take these degrees and the £40k debt to make the world a better place. Minimum wage and a large student loan isn’t much fun. It’s very easy at 18 to think it’s your calling, because nobody wants to be an accountant. I totally get where you're coming from. I have a degree in Liberal Arts, at my own expense (student loans) and obviously that is worth less than the paper it's written on. "Transferable skills" they say. Simply having studied at Bristol was enough to get me into an engineering job (go figure) who put me through a Technology degree. 🤓 So, all is not lost even if the first educational foray is lacking in capitalist potential... I think it boils down to: If someone wants to take a loan out and study something that interests them, then I don't really think anybody else's opinion matters more than the oxygen it took to think it 😉 That’s totally reasonable. I just think the education establishment are a bit too willing to talk up courses which won’t deliver. I didn’t go to uni and worked since 16 and did night school. By the time I was 22 I had 6 years experience and a diploma. I sat next to a colleague who had come straight from a university degree. No work experience. When he found out my basic was higher, he actually went to the boss and demanded more money because he was better qualified. Suffice to say, the boss didn’t give him a pay rise and explained the 3 years relevant job experience I had was worth more. He didn’t like that at all. He actually had a fairly good degree too

Not to cause a raging thread here, but I imagine there are already thousands of unemployed Gender Studies graduates, or at best, they are serving fries! Agree on the life experience too. I was 24 when I started uni for the first time, and I think a mixture of age, experience and qualifications has served me well (as has yourself), as opposed to 21 year old graduates who are basically still school children who shave...!

'Captain Pugwash' was once part of the build-up to the run out music. I thought it was hilarious, British humour at its best. I'd welcome it back as part of the build-up music.

Gender studies graduates are nothing more than an industrial tribunal risk! “I’m qualified to know all of the workplace discrimination law nuances and am active on social media so it will be highly public too”! It’s a bit like marrying a divorce lawyer.
