I would settle for another point v Ipswich, i notice a lot of fancied sides failed to win today, Posh, Oxford, Pompey to name 3. And don’t forget us. 😁 And Sunderland

Parky furious with us for timewasting. Not sure how we were expected to play when we were 1-0 up there. A mediocre manager like Steve mcclaren who seems to walk into job after job Compared to the likes of Wycombe I didn't think our time wasting was that obvious, no obvious signs of players going down injured when they weren't etc. Although what would be tell his players to do in similar circumstances, go all out for a second goal, the blokes a kn0b.

Watched the game with 2 mackems. They were Impressed with our defence. They thought they should have been down to 10 earlier and counted their blessings they weren't. Onwards and upwards utg

Wigan seem to be in a Bolton like melt down, still in Admin and signing players on short term contracts and have put John Sheridan in charge, who seems to have developed a knack of getting teams relegated.

My thoughts on the game; I could give you a summary of the key points but let's be brief.
Great start to get penalty with JML being sharp enough to try and get the rebound; similar to Liverpool 2nd penalty against Leeds in being a stupid tackle this time by the goalie. Great penalty by Leahy.
Generally, our best players were Jakkola, Leahy and Little with Westbrook doing good defensive work in 2nd half. Hanlan looked comfortable at times very confident and casual on the ball. Good signs there. Jakkola made some unbelievable saves. We got mullered 2nd half; one way traffic most of the time although ref bottled it with the 2nd yellow for an obvious trip to a rare breakaway by us. I don't understand why we had 2 up front after 66' with all the pressure; should have plaŷed 1 up front only? We must learn to cover the middle midfield hole and stop loose balls there ((McGuire shot) or players strolling through (Power shot). It wasn't a dirty game but to give 8 minutes was completely wrong; 6 at most. Little was impressive after getting an early yellow. I haven't rated him until now but solid performance with Leahy. Leahy was everywhere. Our MoM was Jakkola. Otherwise a good rearguard fighting performance against a good team. We must learn to clear the balls properly. There was no sign of "Garner Ball" from us; 2 passes from the goalie to defence. If we are going to clear the ball, ask the forward(s) which side they favour and try and kick the ball that way when clearing?
A good point from a tough start.
Ref was OK first half but definitely home biased 2nd. Gave some strange decisions to them, should have sent their player off with double yellow but bottled it and only sent off their player when game was over(I felt that was a yellow).
Our support was OK but too much nail biting at end.
UTG

Onwards and upwards utg Our defence wasn't brilliant but lucky with a very good goalkeeper! On second thoughts, I thought Little and Leahy were superb and the 3 central defenders OK so maybe they have a point? Actually, they did get the point! Who cares now? We start with a point. Tough Ipswich home who will be very confident against us. PS. Nicholson was not in the game at all, Grant not too visible, same as Hargreaves when he came on? PPS If I was the manager, I would ask the EFL for a formal explanation by the ref why B Wright was not yellow carded again and sent off when it was a clear trip, ref gave foul and was taking his yellow out. Ref was definitely yellow and we saw red on that decision!

1-1....I'd happily take that at Sunderland 1st game of the season. We haven't been hammered like most expected. Good Result and let's build from this. We were absolutely hammered 1-1!

Why did Garner start Hanlan,he couldn't have been match fit, thank god it was only cramp, what if it was a hamstring. The guy who has never played at any level hasn't got a clue. No positives today and no good 90 minutes under the belt for the youngsters, no yeah's either.

A fit Jaakkola will make a huge impact on our season. One of the best gas goalkeepers of all time. Let’s hope he stays fit for the season.

An "unfit" Hanlon was far more effective than a fit Ayunga but you wouldn't know that, as you clearly didn't watch the game.

Was always going to be a tough match and so it proved to be but we fought hard and came away with a point I certainly wasn't expecting.
First half I thought we played well. Although we had less possession I thought we used the ball well when we did have it and looked every bit as likely to score as them.
Second half, particularly the last 30 minutes, were very much backs to the wall and only a bit of luck, last ditch defending and great goalkeeping saw us hold on to take a point.
To be honest I half expected the whole game to be like the last 30 minutes so I'm pleasantly surprised by the result and the first half performance.
Defensively much improved, wing backs in particluar had great games. Jaakkola brilliant and I like what I saw of Hanlan, looks a real talent and caused their defence a lot of problems. I don't think it was any coincidence we came under more pressure after he went off.
So plenty of positives and a bonus point in my opinion. However, I still think we're lacking something in midfield and would like to see us sign a box to box midfielder like Sheehan who seems capable of quickly turning defence into attack. Hopefully we might hear something this week, although he played for Newport today so if we are interested it doesn't seem like any deal is close to completion.

I’m seeing the word ‘Lucky’ a lot on this forum post match. Surprising given for all the possession Sunderland had, were restricted to 3 real chances all second half. Little cleared off the line, Jakkola superb save onto the post & also a stop down low to his left soon after half time. Everything else cleared the bar or sailed harmlessly wide.
It is fine having the lion share of the ball, yet they did hardly anything with it? Our defence were superb throughout, making their blocks, intercepting passes & attempted through balls. Sometimes you have to dig in & grind out the point(s). It seems to have upset some on here that we did just that, away to a huge club in this league. If you aren’t happy with a point at Sunderland, no matter what stage of the season, then you require a reality check.

He played well though and showed Garner was right. He was at Gillingham for pre season and played in their friendlies I thought?? So he was probally ok to start.

I very nearly didn’t pay the money to watch on ifollow as I thought I’d be throwing a tenner away but was I glad I did in the end. Let’s face it - if it was the other way round and we came from behind after being a goal down after 3 minutes we’d be delighted - it’s only because we let a goal advantage slip that it seems to be worse to some than it really is. Yes the game wasn’t pretty at times and you could see as much as we were willing them not to, eventually an equaliser was going to slip through. I think we did tremendously well that only the one went in as well, especially with Sunderland having some help from the ref at times. I don’t think anyone wouldn’t have taken a point up there before the game kicked off. Yes we still need to improve but the battering we got today will only stand us in good stead in the future.
Let’s hope we give ipswich a better game next Saturday - hopefully now the cup/friendly mentality is now out the way and the strongest 11 should be playing (in the correct positions) we can start felling properly as a team.
