I think he does make a massive difference. JVS is a competent keeper who makes few mistakes, but he does not pull off the miracle saves and stops that make such a huge difference.
Blackman was a decent keeper - where he has gone this year shows he has a lot of potential, but I honestly feel we would have got more out BG's games last year with Jakkola in goal. Jakkolla definitely played a big part in our league position at the point GC left.

Why did Garner start Hanlan,he couldn't have been match fit, thank god it was only cramp, what if it was a hamstring. The guy who has never played at any level hasn't got a clue. No positives today and no good 90 minutes under the belt for the youngsters, no yeah's either. Look at me .... Look at me...I’m skipping! Pathetic Post and very inaccurate. Have to agree with Lionheart on this. I’m still not convinced about Garner, but I think he chose pretty much the right starting 11 and we did well to grind out that point, which may well be important later in the season. Hanlan did well and we really missed him after he’d been subbed, but I don’t think Garner had any choice over whether or not to play him, as we really needed his presence up front. It was cramp, that’s all. I’m not Garner’s biggest fan, but lots of positives to take from yesterday, I feel. Let’s see what happens against Ipshit. UTG

Please list all his relegations? Chesterfield (x2) and Notts County were both relegated the season he was manager. I can’t believe he is still getting jobs. What makes people want to hire him?! Wigan are obviously massively skint, even for a side in admin.

A fit Jaakkola will make a huge impact on our season. One of the best gas goalkeepers of all time. Let’s hope he stays fit for the season. . Certainly hope so...My firm is sponsoring his Home Kit! Good for you. Thanks.

Just watched the highlights after following the game on radio and here yesterday. The team did really well I thought and the highlights seemed heavily to favour Sunderland as the only foul play I saw was the sending off, which definitely was one. Garner showed class in response to Parkinson at the final whistle I thought, and didn’t look like he expected the abuse he was receiving.
What I take away most was that shot from Max Power who was allowed to waltz thru our half of the pitch with both CM’s backing off and more concerned to block a pass to the players they were marking. This also happened a lot last season, I’d want our DM to step up and close down the free man and leave his position of covering our defence, especially since by this point the team is compact and back line dropping into our own box. I recall we conceded a lot of soft goals from these scenarios last year.
Overall feeling positive and looking forward to watching us play Ipswich.
UTG!

We should offer him a 10 year contract in my opinion.

Point away? First game? At Sunderland? I'll take that.

He is a great keeper. Never gets flustered and very calm. It was noticeable that he made very few passes to the defence yesterday; he reads the game very well. But his goal keeping is top class. Kept us in so many games eg. Wombles away last season. Worth a few millions easily! Just needs to score a few more?

Yes Pointers; good controlling team. I would be wary of trying to play from the back against them. And be ready for their quick free kicks down the wings. They have a multitude of players who can score from anywhere? Will be a tough game. Wigan played well and also have some good players.

Only 1 relagation i make it at chesterfield 2012,he got sacked for fighting with players halfway through a season with notts co when they were above the relegation places. Still 3 posters like your post so they must know the facts.

Completely agree, I feel that JVS lets a fair few goals in which you can fb blame him for but you know that Jaakkola would have managed to dig out a wonder save for!

My good friend lives in Newcastle and was talking to his neighbour today who is a Sunderland supporter. On the Bailey Wright second yellow the local commentator said a Sunderland player clearly told the ref that he had already been booked and at that point the ref put his card away, even the commentator was shocked.

Poor ref'ing all round as given that he's only booked one Sunderland player you'd have thought he know which player he'd booked, not that excuses him not giving him a second yellow card. Apparently the red card has now somehow been rescinded, so it looks like he had a shocker!

Take a look at his record for yourself, its pretty good in my view and his teams always play attacking football. Much higher win percentage than ben garner and a slightly better player than garner as well.
