Right I'm gonna be negative to balance this out a little. I didn't even watch the match so some (maybe quite rightly) will say I don't have much right to comment... However this sounds like what I am worried about. Try and play good football but ultimately end up being pushover. We have gone from playing sh** and Winning under GC. To playing sh** and getting sh** results under BG to tonight (by the sounds of it) playing well but not getting the result. Also we have to remmeber Cardiff at enot a possession based team whatsoever. They had the lowest possession in the championship last season I think? So not having much of the ball and winning is pretty normal to them. It sounds like an improvement regardless though. We certainly weren't a push over. We played a Championship side and remember we have so many new players who have never played together in a competitive match. I thought we were the better team for most of the match but let's not lose sight of the fact that this was a glorified training session. I see a lot of potential in a lot of players. Zain Walker is exciting to watch, Dave the man looks like a good signing.....there were so many positives and very few negatives. I've said this before but let's see how we are doing after 10 league games. I personally think we will have teams worried. Who's dave the man?

I think he's referring to David Tutonda, who some fans have affectionally labelled "Dave"

Feels to me like Garnerball just ‘clicked’ for the first time tonight. Some promising signs for sure - bring on the real stuff! Might be because we didn’t have a target man in JCH ? He was great under Coughlan but different players for different styles. I’m in the Gower so couldn’t get a signal for the match What was the score.? Lost 2-1 Sam

Could it be coincidence that "Garner ball" clicks when there's no JCH?

Could it be coincidence that "Garner ball" clicks when there's no JCH? Yes. I think JCH would be good in this team. I think "garnerball" works best when the front three press. And JCH did that very well against Sunderland in our last match.

BG's comments post match about assessing the squad before signing a striker make worrying reading as surely BG's seen enough of the squad already to realise there isn't an obvious goal scorer amongst them.

Very entertaining tonight. Garner has done well to get them to that level. They say football is a simple game you have to kick the ball into the net which we didn't do enough of tonight. However the rest was quite brilliant and probably the best technical ability I have seen from a Rovers team. What was also remarkable is that we have two first teams and I'm not sure which is the best one they both were superb. Also fitness levels were very high and we seemed to get better as the game went on. I was willing Ayunga to score as I don't want his failed attempts to make him lose confidence. He is raw and we should support him, his workrate and hold up play was excellent. It would be an injustice to the rest to give a MOTM. Well done Ben and the teams.

Could it be coincidence that "Garner ball" clicks when there's no JCH? I think if anything we were missing a JCH type striker up top tonight for the finishing and physicality to give us a bit more penetration going forwards. Ayunga was almost that man but he couldn't convert his chances.

The most encouraging performance so far. I just wonder how we'd have faired against a very different opponent like Forest Green. We need to be able to play to that level regardless how the opposition set up. Time will tell whether Forest Green found a system we couldn't cope with or if it was just a bad day at the office.
Very few negatives tonight. I thought Harries was a bit suspect again at times and Ayunga's finishing was needs work but apart from that, plenty of positives and the best pre season outing for most of the squad.
Tough to pick our starting 11 next week. They'll be a few that will feel a bit hard done by to miss out but with plenty of midweek games they'll all be needed at some point.
Obviously still need a JCH replacement. I'm confident we'll sign somebody. Who it is could turn a good season into a great one.

I had to go out 3/4s in. But a positive about each from the first half.
Annsi- clean sheet, short distribution. Ehmer- won everything he went for. Kelly- tbh havent never particularly rated him. Thought he looked really smart as left sided CB. Either hes improved or that's his position. Which makes me think he might even be a DM. Baldwin- a couple of supreme distributions. Little- general pre season praise; I think understands better than most the freedom a defender has with a 5/ or central 3. Looks so much fitter. Leahy- best tackle of the night.
Grant- a real classy DM. Will take a risk, but I'm not against it. Hes a DM that's more than a water carrier.
Westbrooke- gave me the impression that he'll break passes completed next season. Give and gos all over.
Hardgreaves- never let's you down. Reckon he could be keeper and be alright.
Nicholson- probably involved in the favourite moment that I saw. He can take players on dribbling and with off the ball movement. Will create space.
JML- my MOTM from what I saw. Led the press, should have won a pen. Got through on goal. Given he possibly hasn't got that much experience as a striker- Wow!

To be honest- I think its smart move. I admittedlt prefer DC honesty. But clearly this is a small yarn to ensure we not held to ransom over the loss of JCH. I read it as very much- were want a striker.

DC/GC used to hate discussing transfer targets and positions with the press alongside injury status, length of contract etc. To date Garner hasn't been afraid to discuss any of that. I think he means it.

I think he means it. I think DC hated it because generally he liked to give short contracts to keep players motivated. I think post Wriddington lengths are more common knowledge. I'm pretty sure were in for Hiwula a few posters that have been reliable in the past have almost confirmed as much. I'd take, but not on a contract beyond what hes worth. I reckon we'll do another loan for our fourth striker (not uncommon, see Mcburnie,Telford, jakubiak, Adebayjo). And a think we'll sign a midfielder.

There is no way we're not going to sign another striker let's be honest, we were short of strikers before JCH left. We should have the budget to do so, I just think Garner's comments are his way of being secretive of our business and sending a message to his strikers that they could be our leading talisman if they work hard enough.

Historically our managers always get found out when they get too successful, I attribute this to winning so many games your opponents stop playing to their strengths and start to nullify yours. Any manager with a clue will be instructing their side to press us high up the pitch. That will be a real acid test of ‘Garner-ball’ for me.
