Forum in a meltdown 4 a EFL trophy match which most fans could not care a less about I do despair No we do care because we have lost again Yep, we wouldn't be too fussed about an EFL Trophy match if it wasn't the latest episode in the car crash series which is the Ben Garner era of Bristol Rovers.

Let’s not forget that the team consisted of a lot of the youngsters/fringe players tonight. As uninspiring and disjointed as that performance was, I’m not going to take too much from it. Sunderland will be the true test of where we are currently.

Isn’t this the competition that most people usually say ‘play the kids’ or ‘experiment with formations/tactics’ and ‘give him a run out to get some minutes’, oh and the classic ‘i hope we lose so we are knocked out of this tin pot cup’? Cant have it both ways just to suit your agenda.

Don't worry Ben, they wanted the last manager gone, and the one before him, and the one before him, and the one before him. Don't take it personally mate. Speak for yourself - I didn't want DC gone. Got to love the Garner brigade though - honestly one of kind. There's blind faith and then there's utter denial Blind faith and utter denial of what? I have been one of BG's biggest critics, especially from when he came in until March or whenver the season was cancelled. His win ratio is very, very poor. However, I do have an issue with this chronic meltdown over the 1st round of the Carabao Cup and the total irrelevant pointless, sh** fest of a competition we played in tonight.

I thought we looked quite bright to start with scored a good goal but then gave away a sloppy equaliser and were rubbish from then on. A few positives for me Ayunga looks a handful and took his goal very well, Mehew & Hargreaves both showed a lot of promise. BG can now cross off Kelly at CB and Baldwin in midfield from his list of options, thought they were both very poor. Once again the goals we conceded were dreadful, how we allow 2 free headers with 4 centre backs on the side is beyond me. If tonight was about players being given the chance to stake a claim for Sat then I dont think many have done themselves any favours bar Ayunga, Hare & Tutonda. Probably too soon for Mehew but there's definite potential there

A fool with money is soon departed! What is foolish about appointing a young manager who wants to develop young players? Isnt that an accepted, sensible method to run a football club without racking up huge debts? A fool would spend 100M on a mid table Championship side that sees them develop into....well, a mid table Championship side. £100m is nothing to Lansdown, a bit like one of us buying a car for £1,000 which turned out to be scrapper, I'd imagine the £20m/30m Wael's spent is a big slice of his money. Although if it was easy to turn young players into £1m player why isn't every team already doing it rather than running at massive losses, only P'boro, Oxford and Exeter seem to do it and that's probably taken them 5/10 years to achieve. Regardless I'd sooner trust somebody like Holloway to run such a project than a guy with zero managerial experience.

Surprised no, disappointed yes..... This should be bread and butter with the players we have. The players need to prove they can eat bread and butter before we go saying that. Two games in and the fantastic summer of recruitment is looking...erm...not as fantastic as first predicted. Particularly defensively. Ayunga, Grant, Westbrooke , Nicholson and the other 3 not to your liking ?

Two poor teams, Walsall slightly better side during the 90. Looked like two average league 2 sides that will be playing in league 2 next season. Positives were Mehew and Hargreaves both looked decent and Hare and Tatinga both better than leahy and little. Have to start Ayunga on Saturday preferably in my opinion with Lawson and Nicholson either side and Hargreaves just behind in a 4-2-3-1. This 3-4-3 playing 10 passes out before we get to the halfway line nonsense will get us relegated that I’m convinced of. I’ve seen sides in league 1 try it before and they go down, Swindon and MK dons recently spring to mind. His name is Tutonda - come on Socrates

Giving up before the season has started?! You're not Rovers. Always Rovers....... just want some positives from the playing dept. Think the set up from the top is the best we have had for years, fully supportive of Wael etc. But as stated in a previous post its about results and if you look back to Jan- its not been great

Very disappointing. Not so much the result but the performance was depressingly predictable.
We're supposed to be playing possession based football but according to the stats I saw on ifollow we ended with 46% against L2 Walsall at home. Actaully felt like less and Walsall were fair better with their possession than we were with ours.
The Sunderland game before lockdown gave us false hope because after 11 new signings since BG joined and 2 months pre season we actually look worse.
I'm not even convinced about many of his signings. Harries and Baldwin are both liabilities, supposedly good passers but keep giving the ball away in dangerous areas. At the moment Grant and Westbrooke flatter to deceive, Tutonda struggles to defend and Barrett is overweight and often injured. Only Nicholson, Ayunga and Mitchell-Lawson show promise. I'm not writing any players off but right now I'd happily take back Craig, Holmes-Dennis, Clarke, Ogogo, Sercombe and even bloody Nichols based on what I've seen so far.
The most depressing thing of all is that I can't see it improving while BG is in charge and we're probably stuck with him until at least mid to late October, even if we lose every game.

Particularly defensively. Ayunga, Grant, Westbrooke , Nicholson and the other 3 not to your liking ? In the friendlies, from what I saw- but they haven’t proved they can win competitive games together yet, so saying this should be bread and butter belies the fact that (extreme example) we might not win a game all season. These players have to prove their worth.

Shades of Mcghee with that team selection. He rested 7 for the league game on Saturday. Long trip up on Friday too, no doubt.
