What a pathetic miss by Nicholson unbelievable no wonder we have only scored 11 goals all season regarding Barrett it is appalling he still looks overweight Hardly a "pathetic" miss for a winger plus what about giving some credit for creating the chance in the first place, plus also leading the line all night. Imagine if we'd still had Nichols trying to do what he did last night. Likewise Barrett looked an asset to the team even if he looks overweight, hopefully finally playing will motivate him to get fitter. “Motivate him to get fit”!! He is a professional athlete paid for the privilege! Send him down the hospital for a week and watch those nurses and doctors graft their socks off 14 hours a day. He might benefit from the perspective.

Perhaps Barrett has a medical reason he's overweight - e.g overactive thyroid or something like that. May not be because of his diet or how hard he applies himself in the gym.
Let's see how he gets on. It's nice to have another option at least.

Let's see how he gets on. It's nice to have another option at least. That would explain things and I think everyone would support him and wish him the best if that is case, however, it’s almost definitely straw clutching. Trouble is if you aren’t fit you don’t get in the team. If you don’t get in the team and can’t motivate yourself in training how do you get fit?

Lets try and look at the positives! Going to a back four and not messing around with it at the back. Much better to see this. However, even Darlington will trouble our defence more than Wigan did. For all the critics Leahy has, I do feel he is our best left back. The other two are better wing backs. I feel like PT did not want to take off one of the holding / defensive midfielders. He did that on Saturday and then we conceded. Nicholson is a good player for this level, despite his terrible miss. He is also not a striker and was blowing by the end but he put in a lot of effort. Koiki could turn out to be a decent left sided midfielder, even a winger. Was good to see Barrett back and he looks to have potential. However, I can understand why BG made him train with the kids (if true). A lot of managers wouldn't let a player like that anywhere near the first team until they were in shape. No matter how good they are. I think Tutonda would be a cracking left winger if we tried him there. All his best work is going forward running at people and playing one twos but Koiki could be too as you say.

Ref Barrett, is it really a case of overweight and unfit? surely the club and coaches would not have him anywhere near the squad if that was the case? he seemed to impress most on here last night ,more so than younger and apparently fitter players. Take our mate Akinfenwa ( and in our situation i certainly would!) no one can question his mobility and ability despite looking like Mr Blobby !

You only had to see him on iFollow to see that he was bigger than any other player out there. Although he wasn't sluggish or anything like that. Isn't Akinfenwa just pure muscle? His arms alone are like tree trunks. I don't remember seeing Barrett as big when we first signed him so has this only come on since he got injured in pre season? I thought we had all these extra staff members now, nutritionists etc? Remember when Lambert signed for Southampton they told him he wasn't in shape and he had to work hard on his fitness even though he looked fine to us!

The rest of the team seemed.to have faith in the guy last night Kept giving him the ball at every opportunity and was confident enough to want it and use it. I think he has ability just needs more match time.

Phew, we had 58% possession against Wigan, must be some side. The manager is delighted with workrate. Reality: Utter crap.

I don't really know what to make of last night.
On the one hand there appeared to be a big improvement in the overall performance and I wouldn't say any player had a particularly bad game. The new formation seemed to work well and if we'd had just one of our 3 strikers available I think we'd have won the game.
That said, Wigan are a poor side and it is definitely 2 points dropped and not a point gained.
I'm not going to be overly critical because Tisdale has had very little time to work with the players on the training ground so the improvement we've seen between Saturday and last night will hopefully continue.
With the possible exception of Charlton, our next 4 or 5 league games are against decent mid table sides and will give us a better indication as to how we'll fair over the rest of the campaign.

Agree. These are the games where we will know where we are with PT in charge. Pick up a couple of wins and pull ourselves away from the bottom four will be a good sign of improvement and something to look forward. Fail to win any of them I don't see anyway out of this mess.

Agreed. They are winnable and PT has time with the players. Hanlan has to be rested for Saturday...the league is far more important. The way he holds the ball up and turns people he will be kicked about all season. Wrap him in cotton wool and save for the league

He should not have played against Chelsea last week or at least only been on the bench. We have Ayungah who is the obvious like for like who would normally start these cup games but we didn't anticipate him being out for so long. Daly should be back for the weekend so you could just play him up top, but I feel we will be too lightweight and even though Hanlan can still do things on his own, I feel these two compliment each other and the team much more when they play together.
