With the situation with COVID getting more serious and infections going up, is now the time to call for a halt of all sport in the UK. No one is allowed to watch sport, so should sports clubs be putting their players and staff at risk? We have seen several clubs announce that they have had players/staff infected with COVID. So, surely, is this now the time to suspend all sport. This virus is not going away soon, and we must all do what we can to stop the spread, and that includes football and rugby clubs as I doubt none of them has access to the vaccines available. it just makes sense if a national lockdown is announced by the PM.

Guess it will be close to full lockdown announced this evening. Part of me hopes league football can continue as it gives a morale boost and helps many of us to cope with the week but I guess the health and safety of players and staff is more important. Tough times indeed. I've managed quite well so far but must say it's beginning to take its toll. Losing football would be hard to take.

I think quite a lot of us have managed well so far, it is those who have been infected that we all worry about. What we must do now is to wait for what Boris Johnston will announce at 8pm.

Seems to me that only a lockdown on par with the one last March will have any chance of bringing the virus under control; particularly with the new variant spreading to all areas.

Don’t see why sport should stop. I know this view will be ripped apart but I’ll say it. Of all the deaths only 388 people under 60 with no underlying health issues have died in England. That is a very very tiny percent of the total death toll.
The risk of death for a footballer or any fit 20-40 year old are minimal to almost 0 chance. Yes still a chance but so many things in everyday life are.
Before anyone says they need to protect there family’s, a new lockdown will mean they won’t be able to see anyone outside there house hold anyway.
If a player has certain circumstances or concerns they can be exempt.
Ramp up testing in football. Efl can pay for it.

What real risk is there to fit sportsmen from COVID unless they live with elderly family members (which seems pretty unlikely) or with family members with under lying health conditions. If we stop all live sport then what effect will that have on the mental health of the UK population, given there's little else to do if we go into a further lockdown later this evening?

I would have thought the effect on people not being able to watch football matches twice a week on follow would be negligible. Not being able to do physical exercise would be much more significant, but that's not banned.

Sports events spread Covid but mass protests and riots don’t. Haven’t you been watching TV?

But ultimately footballers cannot do their job at home and without fans present alongside regular testing, I'm struggling to see any valid argument why the leagues should be suspended.

However people's health comes above watching football for me.

Clearly football needs to look at itself to make every safety provision possible but to cancel the sport indefinitely as you're suggesting isn't proportionate nor sensible.

Boris reckons Feb so we can see where we are then. Fingers crossed the roll out goes well and we're in some semblance of normal for the Euros. Bottom line for me is football is entertainment. It can be (and has been) cancelled if it means keeping people alive and healthy.

It can be (and has been) cancelled if it means keeping people alive and healthy. The Feb reference is the target to vaccinate the 70+, to which it'll take 2 to 3 weeks for immunity. It won't be until mid/late summer for 18-40's to be covered. Football is an entertainment but also a huge employer and tax contributor. Cancelling it indefinitely would be a drastic and unnecessary step.
