JB: Jed Ward was injured but still wanted to play and 4 goal went in on the side that he has issues with so JB regrets starting him and we wouldn't have been 5 down of Belshaw started, This is the only worrying thing tonight.
Pitman went off injured during the warm up at Harrogate I couldn't believe it when he still played him for the first 10 minutes after hurting his hamstring during shooting practice !
He strained his groin (pedantic? - yes but you know how much this place is a hotbed of truth and sanctimony)

Before being converted into a wing back at Weston, he was a goalscoring no.10/attacking midfielder in his days in the Clevedon Town u18s and in his early days at Weston. I've only seen this lad once and that was in a friendly for WSM against City82, and he was the best player on the pitch. Surely good enough for L2?

Played at left wing back and was by far the best player on the pitch bombing up and down the wing. See here: gaschat.co.uk/post/643621

Sometimes you don't know if they are ready for 1st team football until you throw them in the deep end. I've heard very good things about this kid from people who are paid to know, and even Peterborough were gutted he came here instead of them. Just look at Hoole who impressed in pre season.. enough for Barton not to get another RB in

Anderson is more of a winger and seems wasted at RWB to me. I can't think of anyone else in the squad, Rodman maybe?

They had him in on trial and had a deal agreed at one point, but the deal fell through for whatever reason. Wolves and Derby were two of the other clubs scouting him in the days before we brought him in.

This EFL Trophy match was in fact a “complete mis-match”.
If ever a game could be classified as Men versus Boys, this was the occasion.
There is no comparison in terms of age, experience, goals scored or first team appearances.
Some of the obvious differences between the players used in the respective teams are:
(1). AVERAGE AGE of the players involved - Bristol Rovers – 20.8. v. Exeter City – 24.7.
(2). TOTAL LEAGUE career appearances – Bristol Rovers – 494 v. Exeter City – 2,123.
(The Bristol Rovers league career starts: Nick A. - 169, Aaron C. - 92 and Zain W. - 62.)
(3). OLDEST Exeter City players in fixture – 3 aged 33 (JG, CD & PA) and 2 aged 29 (TD & JC).
(4). OLDEST Bristol Rovers players in fixture – 2 aged 25 (NA & ZW) and 1 aged 24 (AC).
(5). TOTAL LEAGUE career goals scored – Bristol Rovers – 43 v. Exeter City – 218.
(The Bristol Rovers career goals stats: Nick A. - 6, Aaron C. - 28 and Zain W. - 6.)
(6). 2021/22 LEAGUE SEASON STARTS – Bristol Rovers – 4 players v. Exeter City – 11 players.
(7). Players involved in the horrendous 4-1 defeat at SJP on Saturday August 21st 2021.
Bristol Rovers – TWO – Nick Anderton and Aaron Collins.
Exeter City – SIX – (TD, PS, HK, JC, OE and PA).
Is it in any way surprising that the “running in behind” instruction to the Grecians pre-match and their fluent link play was so effective in the first half?
Is it to be expected that the greater know-how and familiarity of each other’s playing style and technique by the Grecians would overcome the disjointed and cobbled together side?
Exeter City deservedly won the match.
Quelle surprise!

I've just watched the match back and all I can say is you won't see a more bizarre match!? Very even first half, in fact I'd say rovers had more chances and yet we find ourselves 5.0 down. A fit goalkeeper saves at least 3 of those. You would of thought Exeter completely dominanted us with the half time scoreline but we just gifted them their goals. Very wasteful in attack, some very poor finishing on our part. Second half we changed formation and Exeter actually had more of the ball and yet we scored 3 goals. Apart from picking the ball out of the back of the net 5 times, ward didn't have a save to make. Some good performances from some of the rovers youngsters, definitely some positives in the game. Just a shame Collins didn't bring his shooting boots!

Just a shame Collins left them at FGR in the summer?

Ward clearly not right so hope we have a fit Sub for Sat!!!!!!!! Think a fit keeper would have saved at least 3 of them. Should have played Mc Chrystal!!!

So Barton blames the first half fiasco on the keeper for declaring himself fit and not himself for selecting an unfit keeper! Incredible!! Barton, you pick the team not your young keeper!

To be fair, if DC had picked a young side like that and we'd conceded five goals, we'd all have been patting him on the back for treating the Mickey Mouse competition with contempt, which he indeed did. Didn't he substitiute Mildenhall after 5 mins or something once?
Joey does the same and it's all because he's a useless manager. Admittedly, he does appear to be a useless manager, but the kids losing to Exeter is not the stick to beat him with.

Loved Sam Frost comment about this cup competition cheapened by Premier League involvement and cringe worthy sponsors well said on that

Funny how...
When we win a game in this competition (Rovers 2 Cheltenham 0), some people show their delight with the win on that matchday thread saying things like 'that win will give the players confidence' and 'we've turned a corner' etc.
But when we lose a game in this competition (tonight), the same people say things like they 'don't care' and 'it's a pointless competition' and 'we are best out of it' etc.
Funny how...
Some people have a go at fellow Rovers fans when they admit to want Rovers to lose games to get JB sacked, saying things like 'you should want to win every game' and 'you are not a real Rovers fan if you want Rovers to lose'.
But these same people that have a go, they admit themselves that they don't care or are not concerned after Rovers lost this evening.
Personally, I hate this competition but although I hate this competition, I will still listen to the game and discuss it. I wasn't fussed when we beat Cheltenham's kids and I am not fussed we lost to Exeter. I just found tonight disappointing that we didn't learn from the league game when we conceded 4 early goals.
No, all you’ve done, is quoted, everything Barton has said, due to your self obsessed loathing for him? It’s comical 🤣 You've got this so wrong it's actually laughable 🤣 I was listening to his post match interview live on the radio and I thought I might post some of the stuff he was saying for those who were not listening to it and can therefore read it before the recording of it gets posted. Pretty much what a lot of people do every single matchday, regardless of the club they support and who their manager is. I tried my best to keep up with what was being said so was only able to type a few lines of what he actually did say. Nothing more and nothing less than that. Yes I dislike the guy. But did you notice, I didn't say anything negative about what he was saying in his interview? Did you notice that I wasn't calling for his head during or after the game? If I only posted his quotes last night due to how I felt about him (as you claim), then I would have said more than just his quotes. Think about it.
Self obsessed loathing for him 🤣

Im not sure the Ward situation was entirely JBs fault, the player said he was fit to start, the physios checked him over and said he could play. He could have overruled them I suppose but isn't the point of the medical team to guide the manager regarding players fitness ?

DC picked young teams and was never 5-0 down at HT DC didn’t play a unfit keeper because the keeper said he was fit(clearly a good thing that he wants game time but JB should know better) DC didn’t make excuses about school kids.
